What Is America Without Diversity

In the essay, "People Like us" by the author, David Brooks, the main focus is the diversity in America. The United states has a label as being a country that is very diverse. Our country has many different types of ethnic groups, religions, personalities, interest, etc. so in that case, you really can justify the United states as diverse. Brooks mostly uses logic in his essay to prove that, once you look at the United States with a more magnified view, you might realize that technicalities come into play and change the previous statement to, unfortunately, the complete opposite, a corrupt society with no diversity.

The articles “ Can Diversity Destroy Us?” and “A.D.2041: End of White America?” are written by Patrick J. Buchanan who is author and also the former assistant to the president for communications. These articles primarily talk about the idea of diversity in the Unites State and why Buchanan thought it could destroy America and why it is bad. On the other hand, in the article, “Model of America Ethnic Relation: a Historical Prospective”, Fredrickson discusses the ethnic between races and religions through out the American history. David Brooks, a political and social writer, commentator, journalist and editor wrote an article to comment on “diversity” and the nature in which people organize themselves in America. The article was published in The Atlantic Monthly, September 2003. Brooks responds to the issue which he see as the obvious: how diversity is a great deal in the United States but yet, no one gives heed to it. Throughout his response, he brings to our attention the various reasons why he think the issue is present in America. He also presents ways in which people could fix this problem by giving examples of what they could do. With all of that being the center of his response, Brooks did bring up certain ideas which I perceive as either agreeable or disagreeable.

“People Like Us” by David Brooks examines diversity in America and argues that even though society tends to idealize diversity in a way, most of us don’t really care too much about it as long as we are happy. In the first paragraph Brooks states “ what I have seen all around the country is people making strenuous efforts to group themselves with people who are basically like themselves”. This is something that most of us notice on some scale, but what does it say about the need for diversity in America? Brooks explains “The United States might be a diverse nation when considered as a whole, but block by block and institution by institution it is a relatively homogenous nation” This is an irrefutable truth, we all know that cities like Laredo Texas and Lincoln Nebraska are predominantly white and in cities like Detroit Michigan and Jackson Mississippi the population is predominantly black. However, what we fail to realize is the extreme racial separation that is taking place naturally at a much smaller scale, not even city to city but neighborhood to neighborhood and house to house. Brooks backs up his claim with the following example, “In Manhattan the owner of a three million dollar SoHo loft would feel out of place moving into a three million dollar Fifth Avenue apartment”. In my opinion I would say that America doesn't cherish diversity. In order to cherish something you need to love it dearly, and diversity is a variety of a big deal. Despite the fact that people will say that America does agree that they have great diversity, America has shown many, many reasons why they're not. For example, when the Indian boy brought a clock to school and they arrested him because they thought it was a bomb.

Reading over the brilliant work of Michael Walzer’s “What does it mean to be an American” I have discovered that the identity of Americans is that of a “melting pot.” We , as Americans, promote an abundance of cultures that are interconnected to make our country the amazing place it is today. Walzer believes in the diversity of America, he realizes that America’s cultural diversity is part of what makes us the best country in the world.

Our country is a good example of what diversity means. Globalization has increased rapidly, making our society a more diverse place. Where individuals from foreign places with different cultures, race, and languages all unite to become one. As one of my favorite novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, once said, “The rich are different from you and me.” (Walter Benn Michaels 725) The problem here is that Fitzgerald failed to realize that the “rich” were the same as everyone else, except with more money. A diverse society represents a country with various people of color, socioeconomics, national origin, etc. Although we are all different yet, the same, and come from different places, race, color, gender, and socioeconomics, nobody is looked down upon nor superior to the other.

In discussions of diversity and equality, one controversial issue has been the debate of whether or not America cherishes our diversity. On one hand, some say they are unsure about the topic. On the other hand, some people oppose that America does not cherish our diversity. My own view is that America does cherish our diversity, however it’s not a very obvious view for various reasons. Mainly because of how far we’ve come with time, but how over-generalizations has caused us to believe that we don’t. In our society today, we don’t realize the diversity shown within our country, because everything is mainly focused on how we don’t have diversity.
