What Is Axolotl?

Axolotl: Even if you don't remember hearing this name before, chances are good that you've probably seen a picture. Axolotls are a type of salamander that is native to the area around Mexico City. They come in a variety of colors, but you may have seen a white or light yellow axolotl with a bright pink crest of external gills framing its head. Unlike other types of salamanders, an axolotl will spend their lives under water. While they are not fish, they are fun to watch swimming and someone who enjoys keeping and raising fish might enjoy having an axolotl or two in another tank.

The Ambystoma Mexicanum is a cute little amphibian also known as an Axolotl. The distinctive features of this adorable little creature is its feathery gills and it’s flattened- shaped head. They only live in high altitude fresh water lakes. Axolotls are carnivore so they only eat meat. In these freshwater lakes they find worms, insects, and mollusks. They have a permeable skin type with means it lets liquids pass through. Also they are endangered.

More animal species are added to the Endangered Species List that are threatened by extinction every year. Animals’ extinction is caused by human activities or natural causes. Unexpected amounts of animals are considered to be critically endangered and near extinction. Unfortunately, the Axolotl also known as the “water monster” or the “Mexican Salamander” is critically endangered and can only be found in Lake Xochimilco, south of Mexico City. An axolotl and puffin are very different animals. The puffin is in the aves (Bird) Class, and the axolotl is in the Amphibia (Amphibian) Class. Substrate is not essential for axolotls, but it does create a more aesthetic environment and provides surface area for beneficial bacteria. It has been noted, however, that in some plastic or plexiglass tanks, bacterial scum can accumulate on the bottom and cause sores to form on the axolotls’ feet.
