For a very long time, bullying has been a problem. Many wonder, are these people born that way, or were they turned into a bully from the factors outside of them? This centers around anything from a school shooting to calling fellow peers names and even to a group of firefighters getting into an all-out brawl. The article, “A Bully’s Future, From Hard Life to Hard Time”, written by Jane E. Brody and the novel, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, prove that bullies are not born, yet they are made. Children are frequently forced into acting certain ways and dressing in certain ways so they can “fit in”. These kids were not born to feel violent or feel the need to bully people, but they were forced into it due to the frequent taunting they received. If these kids never got taunted for how they acted and dressed then they would have never been made into the vicious, dangerous people they were. In Lord of the Flies some of the kids were forced into becoming bullies and savages because of the conditions they faced on the island. At first, Jack comes off as a responsible kid, and knows to follow the rules. “I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are the best at everything. So we’ve got to do the right things” (Golding). Jack shows a sense of responsibility knowing to follow the rules and not be savages. Jack is later transformed into a bloodthirsty, brutal killer, because of the factors around him on the island. The combination of no parents, order, or even civilization has a big impact
