[pic]What Is Character? How Is It Formed? Character is who we really are. It's what we do when no one is looking. It' s the accumulation of thoughts, values, words and actions. These become the habits that comprise our character. That character determines our destiny. A person of character thinks right and does right according to core universal values that define the qualities of a good person: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition calls these the Six Pillars of Character. Living up to this emotionally purified ideal then becomes a central requirement for maintaining harmonious ties to others and for upholding self-esteem. Thereafter, the emergence of prohibited emotion is experienced as a failure to embody the required ideal, an exposure of the underlying essential defectiveness or badness, and is accompanied by feelings of isolation, shame, and self-loathing. A person with such unconscious organizing principles will expect that his or her feelings will be met by others with disgust, disdain, disinterest, alarm, hostility, withdrawal, exploitation, and the like, or will damage others and destroy his or her relationships with them. I identify with this pillar the most because I try really hard to be different from people in my school and neighborhood. For instance, many of my peers choose to do unproductive things, such as playing video games or watching hours of TV for hours on end, rather than doing their homework assignments. I think that good character is very important in life because it shows who you are as a person, how you carry yourself as a person and how you treat other people. Having good character is what I believe you need to be successful in life, having good character can cause you to get a good job, possibly getting a raise in your job, making friends and just doing the right thing in general.
Character is an important ideal to aspire to because it helps one serve his or her community better and by being kind to others make the world a better place. I hope to improve and build my character through the National Honors Society by being influenced by kind and intelligent role models. I am going to take these influences and be a better role model to those in school and at home by always doing the right thing. A person with a good character tends to be involved in service, or giving back to the community and the world one lives in. This is important to do because having the heart to serve people is a way to show appreciation for what others have done for you, continue the cycle of serving each other, and make the world a better place. I give back to my Palumbo community by volunteering at school events, my Student Runs Philly Style community through volunteering at races, and my local community through volunteering at the library. Even though character is not measurable, everything I’ve done in high school so far has been to become a better person.
