Throughout elementary and high school I was taught in American History that the founder of North America was Christopher Columbus. This is unfortunately inaccurate because America had been founded years before Christopher Columbus had made his journey west. In week 2 lecture I learned about previous explorations to America by the Asian people. In addition there were also explorations by Europeans who had discovered the Americas, but were very imprecise about the physical features surrounding them. This contributed to the creation of inexact geographical representations of the western world. The bad communication between explorers in the west and their counterparts in the east were motivational factors to the Spanish conquests. King Ferdinand of Spain wanted to expand his Kingdom by spreading Christianity and seeking resources …show more content…
In the first clip around the third minute Columbus is talking to a man about his beliefs that the world is unlike others see it. He condemns the flat world theory and is confident the world is round. His theory would pay off since his explorations would lead to profound discoveries and changing the course of human history. Columbus’s thinking would encourage King Ferdinand to fund his voyage and give birth to the three ships known as Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria which would carry the Spanish west. This confidence translated once they reached the shore of Guanahani, which was the Island they first discovered in the Bahamas. In the second clip of the movie Columbus decided to name this Island San Salvador in honor of the Spanish King. His expression in the movie portrays him to be relieved and grateful to God about his new discoveries. This confidence and appreciativeness translated to their interaction with the native Indians living in the newly discovered
When Christopher Columbus sailed to America he was happy and proud of himself because he was the first to discover the land which is now named america, and he was also happy because he found out that there were a lot of resources found on that land which he found was necessary to take and use. According to the document A “Day after day they looked for land; They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand” this shows that the purposely are trying to find land for them to dock and discover. Additionally according to the document A “Columbus sailed on to find some gold To bring back home, as he'd been told.He made the trip again and again,Trading gold to bring to Spain” this shows that he was there not just to discover land but to make riches too and

When Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas he stole land, kidnapped people and started a massacre. This all started August 3, 1492, when Columbus started his trip to India. According to Document B, “I took possession of all of them for our most fortunate King...no one making any resistance.” This was written by Christopher Columbus in 1493. In this quote he is referring to the people of the islands he discovered, saying that he has kidnapped them for the King. It also states, “ In the island, which I have said before was called Hispana, there are very lofty and beautiful mountains, great farms...and well adapted for constructing buildings.”, which describes reasons they should take over the land. Additionally, according to Document C,
Nina had freedom. She lived in New York alone, worked as a tour guide in China. She lived away from her family and with their complicated pasts. She’s a sister of three and is the youngest and most independent. Leila the oldest sister and Ona the middle child. All three sisters had their own kind of way of dealing with the family. Ona one of the quieter child committed suicide and that might’ve been her way of escape.
Many people believe believed throughout history that the beginning of North America’s inhabitance was when Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the year 1492. They believed that he is the person who discovered America where in fact it was the Native Americans who made the initial discovery. Therefore, Columbus’s mission is considered more of a journey. One of the motivators behind the voyage was to move away from Britain and begin a new life in what was to them, land of potential opportunity.
Beginning in the early 15th and 16th centuries, people began settling in places like Europe, Africa, Asia, and the New World. Like many of the surrounding people and empires, the Iberians wanted to reach the wealth of Asia and get their hands on the New World first to possibly gain world dominance. The Iberian presence in Asia, Africa, and the New World in the late 15th and early 16th centuries helped aid the Spanish and Portuguese to become world powers. Combining with the conquering of new lands in the New World and parts of Africa, the use of Christianity and the converting of conquered people, and the exchange of goods with foreign countries helped make this mission a reality.
Thomas King’s chapter “Forget Columbus” surrounds the idea that the preconceived notions that Americans have about their own history, and the Native Americans who have resided here for centuries, are wrong. Columbus never discovered America. The
For thousands of years mankind has felt an insatiable desire to explore. Many people groups from around the world have discovered and conquered new lands. The Spanish Conquistadors are among these. In the 1500s, there were many compelling incentives luring them to gain control of the Aztec Empire in New Spain (Mexico). What impelled the Conquistadors to conquer the Aztecs was a desire to spread the teachings of the Christian church, to gain wealth allowing them to establish roots in New Spain, and to develop relationships between the Aztecs and the continental Spaniards.
The early voyages by the Portuguese and Spanish were motivated by gold, trade and the spread of the Catholic faith through religious conversion. The voyages of a few adventurers show that the Spanish and Portuguese goals were to spread Catholicism, expand trade, and expand the kingdom of the Spanish and the Portuguese to the new lands they’ve discovered. These adventures were Christopher Columbus who attempted to find a new route to Asia to extend Spain’s trade and to colonize, Bartholomew Columbus and his successful founding of Santo Domingo, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and his
Growing up with a brother that has a mental disability, I’ve become very familiar with organizations that support children with disabilities. Make-A-Wish is a well-known nonprofit organization that grants terminally ill children their dream wish. If I could choose any person to room with it would be Tommy Austin. Tommy Austin is the co-founder of Make-A-Wish and a retired U.S. Customs agent. In the spring of 1980, Austin met a child named Chris Greicius who was dying of leukemia. Chris dreamed of becoming a police officer when he grew up. Austin was determined to not only grant this wish for Chris, but to also give him something to look forward to in life besides doctor visits. With the help of other officers, Austin was able to make Chris an honorary officer just days before he breathed his last breath. This story inspired many people to grant wishes for more children like Chris, thus creating the Make-A-Wish foundation.
Christopher Columbus set out on his voyage in 1942 on the West Indian islands, to find a new world for the Europeans. When he landed on the Caribbean Island the Indian Natives that lived there were at first scared but greeted him in a friendly manner. The conquest and settlement of the Western Hemisphere opened new opportunities for other Europeans such as the French, Dutch, English and Spanish to come to the island and colonize the Indian's land. For the Europeans to colonize and move in on Native land they had to find a way to interact with the Indians. Through their interaction they found cultural understandings and confusions that were documented by both the Europeans and the Indians. In the book, "Major Problems in American Colonial
Most history textbooks take Christopher Columbus and put him on a pedestal. These textbooks make Columbus the fantastic hero who was the first person to discover the Americas. These textbooks were wrong in idolizing Columbus. One text called The Lies my Teacher Told Me contradicts these textbooks. The text states that there were already many different groups of people that landed in, explored, or colonized the Americas. The first group of people was the ancestors to the Native Americans that were living there when Columbus came in 1492. Also the Norse established a colony in Greenland for 500 years (Loewen, 8). While there, the Norse explored parts of North America (Loewen, 8). This evidence proves that Columbus was not the first person to discover the Americas. Columbus began the demise of the current Indian cultures in the area. While Christopher Columbus and the
When Columbus sailed to prove that the world was round, according to the website Livescience.com, he was late by two-thousand years. Ancient Greek mathematicians already have already proved that the world was round and not flat. Also according to this website, Columbus’s education was self taught and he believed that Europe was wider, and that Japan was further away from China’s coast. These are the reasons that he was going to try and find shorter trade route to Asia. When a student hears Columbus’ name they may instantly think that he was the first person to discover America. Although there were millions of Native Americans who were living in the New World, Columbus is the man who is getting all of the credit for finding the New World. There were also other travelers who had discovered America before Christopher Columbus.
It strives to illustrate the reason that prevented Europe from expanding into the new world that Columbus holds was due to superstition and conservatism geared by an impulse to leave things as they were. Also, the movie makes Columbus be more intelligent a factor that perhaps was not to the extent but perhaps this was to show that the historical figures exist so as to get reinterpreted very often depending on the current need. Columbus thus was a historical figure that the individuals would still use in the new world to give illustrations of some events that had taken place at the
Christopher Columbus came thinking he found Asia when in fact all he found was the Americas. The ship they were in was called Saint Maria. The first place they landed was Cuba. They were in search for gold mostly, which Columbus promised the king and queen in Spain. He took the Arawaks Indians as slaves when it was hard for him to find gold. When he arrived in Haiti he created the first military base called Navidad which means charismas. Columbus then traveled to the Hispaniola and his thoughts was he arrived in China. He described the Indians as naive and willing to share. Indians did not believe in marriage. To them people may choose who are their mates and if
