Many animals have adapted over time and become nocturnal for various reasons. Some of those reasons ranging from escaping predators to escaping harsh desert heats (Griffin, 2017). For example Bats, owls, and fireflies all fall into the nocturnal animal club (Griffin, 2017). Although you may also think many rodents would fall into this group, a large chunk of rodents are actually something called crepuscular meaning they are awake in the twilight hours versus being only nocturnal or diurnal. These twilight hours are considered either around dawn or dusk. Circadian rhythmicity is a critical component in these animals physiological processes which provides them with a 24-hour temporal organization much like a clock (NIGMS, 2017). Connection Questions Connection Question #1, How does our perception of time affect our memories? Time is an essential resource we use for perceiving what’s happening around us and responding to it. We use it to tell where a voice is coming from, we time how long it takes for the sound to reach both ears. We even use it to respond to the voice by speaking ourselves, using precise timing so the person behind the voice can understand what you said. Scientists are finding that animals use timing in their advantage as well. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh, built fake flowers with sugar inside to reveal how hummingbirds tell time. To test the fact that the humming birds could tell time was buy refilling the flowers nectar after a certain period of time. In order to understand how your brain perceives time think about how time seems to stop when you see something shocking, how it speeds up when you’re having fun (Williams, 2006). In the brain, there a regular series of pulses being generated allowing us to feel time and tweak it (Zimmer, 2008). When the brain stores time in memories, it may record time in a way that makes our brains recall events in backward order although when we think of them you don't realise it (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2016).
