The Twixter Phenomenon
While Henig and Grossman both write about how the young adult generation has changed in their respective Times magazine articles, Grossman is more effective in accomplishing his persuasive purpose on how young adults are unable to settle down in his article “Grow up? Not so fast.” through his convincing appeals. Henig’s article “What is it about 20-Somethings?” is still effective, but Grossman’s article is more compelling. Grossman utilizes personal examples and credible sources to enhance his argument and delivers to the audience a broader understanding of the change in generations.
In Grossman’s first paragraph he lists a group of “twixters”, which are young adults who cannot get their life settled. He goes on to state that these “twixters” have had several jobs since college, moved apartments frequently, and have not gotten married. By stating this, he gives his audience a good understanding of what these “twixters” experience. In his next paragraph he states, “Thirty years ago, people like Michele, Ellen, Nathan, Corinne, Marcus and Jennie didn 't exist, statistically speaking.” (Grossman), which lets the audience know how much generations have transformed. These first two paragraphs of the article are an emotional appeal because it demonstrates that adulthood is not the same as it once was and young adults are struggling to figure out what they want to do with their lives.
