Hello readers! A few members of the OpsGenie team were lucky enough to attend DevOps Days DC last June. I was presented with an amazing opportunity to learn even more about development and operations and how this plays into business practices today. Thankfully with DevOps comes ITIL and with a variety of discussions I feel like I have finally grasped both philosophies. What I learned is that there seems to be a growing belief that DevOps will lead to the death of ITIL. But, what is ITIL and what is DevOps? And why are people so convinced that DevOps will entirely replace more traditional IT approaches? And can both coexist in today’s IT world? In this blog we’ll examine these questions and also how we, at OpsGenie, see it playing out in the very near future. ITIL is short for IT Infrastructure Library, it was developed in the UK, and belongs to AXELOS, a joint venture between the British Government and Capita plc . It is a widely accepted IT service management approach. ITIL provides a cohesive set of practices, drawn from both public and private sectors. It is supported by a qualifications scheme, accredited training organizations, and implementation and assessment tools. ITIL is a framework that was designed to standardize the IT services of a business, such as, its selection, planning, delivery, and support. Its goal is to improve the efficiency and predictability. Now, DevOps. What is DevOps? DevOps is a cultural movement that emphasizes collaboration and
Key Issues At NAF, delivering value with IT is about more than delivering projects on time and on budget or having a good IT development shop. They have all this but theres still not enough value getting delivered. This case explores the questions of who is responsible for delivering value with IT and when IT value is delivered. It emphasizes that value delivery should be a business-IT partnership responsibility and will require change in the business over time. The first part of this case looks at the relationship between business strategy and IT development projects. It makes it clear that enterprise business strategies need enterprise solutions and a procedure for matching these. It also introduces the concept that investing in IT
Seven veteran employees remain in the IT department, each specializing in a subsystem of the infrastructure. Informational silos exist, two additional employees were added to expand the operation. An IT implementation process can be long and tedious, or short and simple, depending on the size and needs of an organization. While implementing this process it is important to understand the roles and responsibilities of each step. Sometimes when the process is not thought out correctly, IT failures happen. IT failures are common reasons that systems do not work, or have many flaws.
Financial management for IT services (ITSM) is an IT service management process area for control of expenses. Also, many financial managers strive to save money by scrutinizing the cost of IT. For instance, ITIL offers a suite of efficiency driving tools which can help businesses identify where they can offer huge cost management. With ITIL management can be configured to implement cost reduction strategies to reduce cost. Therefore the aim of a financial manager is to promote IT services is to give accurate and cost effective stewardship of IT assets and stewardship of all IT assets and resources used in providing IT services. The IT depart is used to planning, controlling, and recovering plan, control and recover costs expended in providing that the IT service negotiates and agrees on the service-level agreement (SLA) (Conger, Dattero, Galup, & Quan, 2009).
As a result, the IS people weren’t a particularly happy lot...no one really had a great deal of respect for them.” (Brown & Vessey, 2001) This shows that business users were disconnected with their IT development counterparts and most often blamed IT for not doing enough to fix problems with the applications. They failed to realize that the problems they were seeing with their systems was due to the business users requesting a lot of adhoc changes to be made to the system without engaging proper change management
In the market today, business is showing growing interest to partner with IT to make sure they get the value for investing huge in technology. But, still there is a gap between the two departments and the IT folks think that they do not have enough support from the business to ensure the value is realized for the organization. A good example of deep integration of IT and business is the recent firing of the Apple maps chief. The ill-fated Apple maps was the failure of both the IT folks who couldn’t develop an efficient app for maps and also the business who couldn’t gather all the requirements and couldn’t manage the project to achieve the desired output. As a result, the Apple exec Richard Williamson was blamed and fired for the disastrous project and humiliation for the organization.

All these factors are creating new challenges and new opportunities for businesses of all kinds and for the public sector. Adapting to the volatility and change is crucially dependent on, and in many cases driven by, IT. But to successfully meet these challenges and grasp these opportunities, you must focus on what you do best, not on becoming systems experts. Therefore, IT managers need effective management systems and processes to help them deal with the issues and challenges inherent in their responsibilities.
