In her novel My Antonia, Willa Cather remarkably illustrates the unsettled lifestyle of several pioneer families living in the prairies. Through the protagonist’s character, she emphasizes on spirit, tenacity and courage. Antonia is at the heart of almost every human condition that the book effortlessly unravels.

The story smoothly unfolds around the life a bohemian family, the Shimerdas and their winsome daughter — Antonia. The story is told trough the smitten eyes of Jim Burden — a welcoming neighbor sent to the prairies by his relatives after his parents’ deaths. The physical setting plays an important role in most of Cather’s novels but more particularly in My Antonia where nature is ubiquitous. It even goes so far as metaphorically interacting with the characters themselves. Nature is honored for its fertility, beauty and immensity.

Central to piece, Antonia bewitchingly communicates and emphasizes emotions, her great qualities and her untouched optimism sets her apart from her contemporaries in a complex and yet beautiful way. Indeed, throughout the novel, Antonia demonstrates that despite all the hardships and all the loses, she does not believe in fatality. While the pioneer’s lifestyle is undeniably disheartening and leaves little hope for a better future, Antonia still finds a way to fulfill what we call today the American dream.

My Antonia does not only depict the pioneer’s life in the late 19th century, the book also acts as a mirror in which the reader progressively learns to observe a reflection of his own life and to identify Jim and Antonia as people who have guided him through his own
