John's parents have always taught him right from wrong. A senior in college, John was the captain of the basketball team at a popular university and was being looked at by several professional basketball teams. John made good grades and had an excellent work ethic. It was important to him to be a good role model for his younger brother and sister. Being in the midst of the championship, John's team travels to different cities and often stays overnight in hotels. One particular evening, the team decides to go out for dinner and enjoy the sight-seeing. At the restaurant, some people recognized the team and wanted to treat them to dinner - and drinks. Even though John is over 21 and can drink, he doesn't want to drink. He doesn't want to compromise his chances of going to the NBA. …show more content…
To his surprise, his other teammates accepted alcoholic beverages from fans. They began pressuring John to drink and telling him he should be nice to the fans. He was the only one on the team not drinking but he held his ground. Shortly after, John left the restaurant and went back to the hotel. The next day, his teammates were hung over and could barely make it through the morning workout. Later, they realized that pictures and video had been taken of them and they got back to their coach. Now, they are facing suspension and could jeopardize their plans for the NBA. John made a wise decision to stick to what he believed. He didn't allow external influences to place him a position that could affect his future - the one he had worked so hard
In many books written by his teammates and friends quoted “MJ would drink beers and wine after the game.” One reporter took a photo captioning “MJ and Scottie drinking losing their six packs.”
I am reading Swagger by Carl Deuker and I finished the book. This book is about Jonas Dolan, a 17-year old basketball player that has moved to Seattle to start a new life. Not only does he have a spot on his new team, but he also needs to grind in the offseason to impress a coach that wants to give him a scholarship. When a new coach takes over coaching his high school team, Jonas starts playing well with the guys on his team. The new coach’s style of play is a lot like Jonas’, and the team started to enjoy spending time with the team. As everyone started getting comfortable with the new coach and new playing techniques, Coach Hartwell started getting too comfortable around the boys. He served them beer at a hotel they were staying at, and
In today’s society money determines how someone is treated by others. It’s very unfortunate that society has reached this point, and hopefully it will change soon. In the movie “John Q,” the father’s dying son is ignored and won’t receive treatment because they are middle class and aren’t able to pay for it. Just as his parents hear this news, they see a rich man being treated as royalty after the exact same surgery that their son needs. It’s pretty hard to argue that money is a deciding factor on how someone gets treated nowadays. That’s just how it is.
In the totalitarian country of London, the people are not subjected to war, hate, poverty, disease and suffering. There is an abundance of wealth, leisure and pleasures, but with utopia comes elimination of freedom and orthodox values. The people in the society are created in factories, then put into a strict 5 class hierarchy. To take the edge off of the harshness of reality, they take a synthetic drug called Soma and drift into blissful ignorance. When a savage named John—who becomes isolated from his indian tribe in New Mexico—comes to live in utopia London, he is forced to learn the strange, untraditional customs of the civilization. In the end, he has to choose between either assimilation or death. In the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, John the Savage is both alienated from his community and emotionally enriched after being isolated from his home tribe.
He had already lost everything; his home, his family, his town, but his name was the only thing he had left. He knows he has done wrong and deserves consequences, but not for something he didn’t do. John was a good man; he wasn’t going to let a judge make his decisions or tell him what’s right or wong. In the end, God holds the final judgement on your life and the decisions you have made, this is what John lived by.
So it’s Jayson Barnes’s first practice with his new team, the Bobcats. Jayson already doesn't like his new coach because they have very different opinions on basketball. The Bobcats are scrimmaging, and Jayson’s team has the ball. As Jayson drives to the hoop, he gets hit in the face but his coach doesn’t see it. Jayson is enraged about this. Next his opponent drives to the hoop, Jayson throws an elbow that hits his opponent square in the jaw. This time, his new coach does see it. He calls the foul and Jayson’s team ends up losing at the end. I think this story perfectly captures Jayson’s competitive and unforgiving
John knew he could live with his wrongdoing for his children but then he heard that Glies Cory died by being crushed to death for refusing to go to trial. What really was the last straw was when he saw Rebecca Nurse being brought in and refusing to confess a crime she didn't commit. He then realizes again that honor is more important and proceeds to rip up his signed confession.
To whether or not John is a coward I would have to agree. Certain aspects of certain decisions he has made have been weak. When faced with confrontation he tends to move away for back down. John is a coward because he is weak in his decisions, he is easily scared, and he does not have faith in anything.
One of the biggest problems in our society is under age drinking. They tell us how we aren’t allowed to drink, that we aren’t old enough or mature enough to do it, but the more adults talk about it, the more teenagers want to do it. When a kid goes off to college, it’s
John’s drinking problem tears his family apart actually, it excludes him from his family. While his children and wife can bicker and love each other again, John finds himself an outcast to his family and jealous of how his wife can connect with their son. Johnny and his mother are shown during a usual quarrel of how well the boy should be kempt. However, the father does not care to quarrel over his best interests, as John sees things, he knows when he needs food and how to take care of himself. John can often find himself reaching for the bottle to bring back a buzz when his wife tries to take care of him. Despite being estranged from his son, John still has the opportunity to try to fix their relationship. As an effort to be in his son’s life, John reluctantly agrees to go to a scout meeting with Johnny. Scout meetings can be a terrific bonding experience. However, they can take a turn towards a disaster when you make the decision to drink for your gain and not think of the others around you. After making a scene and putting Johnny on the spot, John created a bigger rift in the already fragile relationship and likely ruined all hope of ever connecting with his son. This is shown after the scout meeting when Johnny runs from his father and his father’s futile apologies. John’s drinking breaks down his family’s bonds and leaves him excluded from his former love and
1 John was written by John sometime between 90-95 AD as a personal letter to believers. He is writing concerning the assurance of eternal life as it seems though perhaps some had some doubts as to whether or not they were really saved because of sin. They key word throughout the entirety of the book is fellowship. He discusses some of the hindrances to fellowship, conditions for fellowship, and the benefits of fellowship. He was really trying to encourage the believers to live a Christian life that will lead to assurance. His secondary purpose was to refute Gnosticism and the false teachings related to it that denied some of the aspects of Christ. 1 John 1:5-2:2 is a discussion of the basis for fellowship to emphasize the main objective of
John is a 17 year old male who lives in Oregon. To celebrate his 18th birthday, he decided to go out with some friends and have a few drinks. He knows that the legal drinking age is 21, but he thinks what is the harm? I am 18 and in other countries, you are allowed to drink before you turn 21. Later that night as John gets in the car with his friends after a few hours of drinking, everything seems to be going well as they are driving down the freeway on their way over to his friend Dan’s house that is just a few miles up the road. All of a sudden out of nowhere a car comes around the curve and before Dan who was driving could react fast enough, the two cars collide. This unfortunately is a case that has occurred many times all across the country, many times with unhappy endings and lives changed forever. John is one of the many who believe that the legal drinking age should be lowered to under 21. After looking through research, articles and opinions, I have come to the conclusion that being allowed to drink before you turn 21 is not in the best interest of developing adolescents and their abilities to make the best decisions for themselves. I will present figures and facts from articles published to help support my position in the following paragraphs.
Getting away from all of the drinking, and fighting involved in his life, Junior and his best friend Rowdy always found a way to enjoy themselves and play basketball. It was a custom to connect to anything but the hole of depression that the rez gave off. Junior found that maybe it would be something he could excel in if he were just bigger and more stronger. Junior quotes, “ I’ll probably be a benchwarmer on the C squad while Rowdy goes on to all-state glory and fame.” (28) I think junior always doubted himself enough to make himself realize that something needed to change. In the novel, basketball plays a role that actually brings Rowdy and Junior together playing other teams, to playing against one another. They were best friends but then it changed, and soon they became rivals due to Junior’s decision to leave the one and only place that ruined his family, and many other people’s lives. The rez. It is this decision of Junior’s that changes the whole focal point in the novel, and it is a big decision in Junior’s life, and the way people from his hometown see him. This plays a large role of showing how close communities can really be, and how one decision could change
I cannot say whether Smith has done wrong, OR. I said this because she thought only of saving his "utilitarian" friend. I think everyone would choose to save their loved ones. But also wrong that Smith knew that the switch was pretty weak, so she forcefully throws the switch, Causing it to break. As a result five people were killed. Perhaps, Smith acted a little
King John died on October 18, 1216, leaving Henry, a nine year old, to inherit his throne in the midst of the First Barons’ War (1215–17), in which a group of rebellious barons supported by a French army, made war on King John because of his refusal to accept and abide by the Magna Carta. Because a large part of eastern England was under the control of the rebellious barons and the French, it was thought that Henry should be crowned as soon as possible to reinforce his claim to the throne. Therefore, Henry was crowned on October 28, 2016 at Gloucester Cathedral with a golden circlet belonging to his mother as the coronation regalia were at Westminster in
