Abstract Since Untied States was founded in 1776 Americans have experienced independence from the British. This country representative democracy is bounded by the constitution. Leaders impacts a social influence in which one person can rejoin the scullion and sponsorship of others in the accomplishment of a specific duty. Who makes a good leader; someone who is feared or loved? Research concludes leader ship and the trait theory that leads a commander to have authority over society or a social issue. Basis of Leadership You must have an honest understanding of who you are, what you know, and what you can do (Northouse, 2007). If you do not trust or lack confidence in their leader, then they will be uninspired (Northouse, 2007). To be successful you have to convince your followers, not yourself or your superiors that you are worthy of being followed (Northouse, 2007). The fundamental starting point is having a good understanding of human nature, such as needs, emotions, and motivation (Northouse, 2007). Communication makes a leader well respected or loved. What and how you communicate either builds or harms the relationship between the leader and society (Northouse, 2007). Situation a leader must use judgment to decide the best course of action and the leadership style needed for each situation (Northouse, 2007).
Concession of Leadership Theory of leadership states that are three basic ways to explain how people become leaders (Stogdill, 1989; Bass, 1990). Being able to gain support and recognition is a crucial part when discussing good qualities of a leader. Acquiring recognition will aid in getting people to support them. A good leader will be able to achieve the support they need go forward with their intentions. People want someone with authority to go through with their desired actions. If the leader is not confident and may back down easily, this defeats the purpose of a strong leader. In addition to being an assertive leader, being able to be trusted is a salient element in being a competent leader. Being able to put full trust and support behind someone, they must be honest. The very essence of leadership is having vision to influence followers so that they show willingness to change, leaders need a specific set of skills to guide their actions. The skills can be thought of as the inner tools for motivating employees, systems and processes to direct and guide the organization towards common goals that enable it to achieve its mission. Leadership requires personality enthusiasm, integrity, self-renewal. Leaders possess attributes (beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, courage and skills) that make people feel proud to follow. They provide a sense of confidence and can rally the troops and morale when there are difficulties. Leaders take responsibility when the situation demands it and do the right things done on time, know that even mistakes can be learning opportunities. Leaders must be approachable and willing to consider the opinions made by the followers. At times, the leaders must carry out decisions favored by majority of the followers. Leaders must inspire collaboration amongst the followers. If a dispute breaks out, the leader must not pick a side, but rather unite both parties and empower them to work together. Leaders must be role models for followers and even inspire others to be leaders someday.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
People’s beliefs on how individuals become leaders affect the way they evaluate leadership potentials. If people believe that leaders are born, it is likely to result in selecting or identifying the right people for leadership positions rather than developing the leaders. Leadership refers to the exercise of influence over others on behalf of a specific purpose, goals, and aims of the leaders. Some leadership theories such as Trait theory and Great Man theory believe that individuals inherit some traits and qualities that make them suited for leadership (Lussier & Achua, 2015). The trait theory is based on the notion that leaders possess different traits such as intelligence personality, ambition and perserverance from the average person. It is under the assumption that leaders are born with traits that enable them to lead others that do not have those traits (Manktelow). This meant that if only people could be found to possess the leadership traits that others have, then they too could become leaders
When it comes to leadership everyone has their own idea or theory of what is required of a leader, how they should be perceived, and what skills it takes to be a leader. The information below shows how ethics, healthy communication, performance, power, and social perception are a part of being a leader in the business world. A leader in the business environment has to have high morals, understand, set a strong example of the actions they want their employees to emulate, exhibit that they are in charge, and have a good reputation.
