“Same Love”
Singer and song-writer Macklemore, produced the song Same Love which has historic, aesthetic, and moral value. His song highlights issues like homophobia, discrimination against the gay community, and inequality. In his song, he uses an anecdote of a little boy believing he was gay because of the comparison the little boy was making of himself to the stereotypes. Macklemore projects a moral value of believing in love equality, and realizing love is love no matter the gender.
The gay community has a long history of cruelty and discrimination against them. Their history began with riots against police oppression of gays in New York City more than 40 years ago, to homosexuality being

Macklemore says, “I thought I was gay ‘Cause I could draw, my uncle was and I kept my room straight… a bunch of stereotypes all in my head”. He uses an anecdote of a young boy who is confused about who he is. He compares himself to the gays stereotypes and realizes he might be gay too. It is damaging to society to have stereotypes that sometimes not be true. Children do not know any better, but to believe the ideas or thoughts put into their mind. He also refers to the bible, “‘God loves all his children’ is somehow forgotten”. By using this allusion, he brings up the issue of inequality. God loves ALL his children, he does not judge, he does not hate. Human beings develop hatred or dislike for those who are different, and that does not make them any better than those who are different. In God’s eyes, everyone is the same. Macklemore repeats the word “gay” to defend what he says on how that word is “dropped on the daily” because people become blind on what they say. The word is used with a negative connotation to insult others, because people do not realize the potential consequences of their …show more content…
He voices the importance of changing the way they are viewed, to realize the gay community has gone through many obstacles and continue to go through them to be able to live a normal life. Macklemore also makes sure that no matter the different beliefs, race, or preference everyone is the same. “Same Love” by Macklemore has the historical importance of the gay community, proving the point that with all the events they have gone through the gays are still standing strong. Aesthetically, he makes sure his song illustrates the importance of equality by using an anecdote of a normal boy, and using allusions to the bible and religion. He emphasizes the moral importance of all humans deserving the same right to love who they want because all love is the same
The appeal he uses most often is pathos, it is found throughout the song. Macklemore uses a word that is very hurtful to homosexuals: “faggots" (Haggerty, Lewis, Lambert, 2102). He uses it to show how people inappropriately use the word, but it is a word that causes a lot of pain to some people. His word choice is effective in bringing out emotion as in the line, “plagued by pain in their heart.” The choice to use the word plague describes just how bad the pain is. When people hear the word plague, we think of a widespread disease that affects hundreds and causes worldwide scare. He is saying that this pain is what they have in their heart every day. By using pathos to appeal to the emotion of love in every chorus, “my love, she keeps me warm,” Macklemore successfully tugs at a listener’s heartstrings because most can relate to the feeling of love in some way or another. Another phrase that he uses that applies to pathos is “some would rather die than be who they are.” In today's society, the topic of suicide is extremely emotional, which is what this lyric refers to. Macklemore uses a great deal of pathos appeal to reach out to his listeners and get his argument across.
“I love you, please say you love me too,” she sings. “I love you / I will be your light, shining through your eyes.” Still yet, we have “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce’ and Jay-Z, hip-hop artists. “Your love’s got me looking so crazy right now,” they sing/rap. “Looking so crazy in love.” Despite the musical differences between all these artists, all three songs/genres were able to give light to the theme of love. And even though the theme may be the same, the music and words were not. So even though two songs may have a theme that is similar, themes in music add diversity.
Ben Haggerty, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert have written a song and made a music video that will make others look at gay’s rights and America differently. The message was powerful and well phrased, which made it interesting to listen to. The music video was also entertaining and unique to watch. The emotional impact of the visual story just makes you want to see the video over and over again. “Same love” is quite literally like nothing anyone has seen before. It has become a new revolution for the gay rights movement. The powerful message, the entertainment value, and the emotional appeal make the video well worth watching.
Furthermore, the goal of the music video is to inspire the LGBT community to be proud of who they are, promote the gay right movement not only in America but globally and to make a change toward all of humanity with speaking his belief. Macklemore’s “Same love” targets teenagers, adults, any race, any gender, in efforts, to raise awareness and stop discrimination, support equality and gay marriage. To begin he starts by targeting adolescents who are suffering from feeling different from the norm of society, then proceeds through the life span of a homosexual stressing the need for expectance. The older generations are a little more old school and have a harder time accepting changes in today’s society, such as, homosexuality for this reason some do not believe in equality like gay rights. The strictly religious communities follow what they were taught in the bible resulting in not believing in gay rights because God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Bob.
In the music video "Same Love", Macklemore used pathos, history, and symbolism to emphasize on gay marriage, marriage equality, and homophobia in hip-hop. It follows a storyline of how a boy started to feel like he was gay in the 3rd grade, but his mom reassured him that it was just a phase. Throughout his life, he still had that strange feeling that he could not shake. He was even pressured by his peers to play a game called seven minutes in heaven. He became very uncomfortable which caused him to leave to another party. One day, he decided to bring his partner to his parents' house for dinner and disclosed that they were getting married. As usual, the parents are surprised to hear that their child likes the same sex. Towards the end of the story, the two men get married and by their sides were their families supporting them in every way. Finally, they were happy with a child
Cultural phenomenon, rapper Kendrick Lamar has embraced a growing minority centered culture in America through his album “To Pimp A butterfly” this album conveys themes of hardship for minorities and cultural uprising. One of the singles on this album “Alright” simply tells black audiences that with faith everything will be alright. He uses the Lyrics “Alls my life I has to fight, nigga .Alls my life I...Hard times like God. Bad trips like: ‘God!’ Nazareth, I 'm fucked up..Homie you fucked up..But if God got us then we gon ' be alright” These lyrics simply tell suppressed minorities that despite hardship there is hope within our communities. . Months prior to the release of Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” several attacks from white police officers happened in the black community. A common case in this uproar was the “Mike Brown case”. In this case a black man was shot dead after allegedly robbing a local gas station. Kendrick simply responded to these seemingly racial attacks with his album to “Pimp a Butterfly”. To pimp a butterfly simply means to use your influence to the best of its ability to make a meaningful impact. With tracks like “Alright” Kendrick Lamar does just that. The Primary themes and issues conveyed in this song are white supremacy, racism and black uprising
In this Gays and lesbians deserve equal protection against the hate crimes that happen in the world. Aren't we told as young children and also throughout life to treat others as we would want to be treated? So why are some decimated against based on sexual preference? The statistics show the percentages of the hate discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual community. The violence that they are pitted against, due to people's discrimination against them, in life. And I will also mention the discrimination that the LGBT community goes through and what they miss out based on sexual preference.
In the article, “BOW DOWN, MACKLEMORE: Why Same Love is NOT My Queer Anthem,” Kelly Fox argues that Macklemore’s song Same Love is homophobic, racist, and that Macklemore is a poor excuse for an LGBT ally. While Fox may have a few good points, she rants throughout her article, and establishes almost no credibility with her audience. All of this makes finding those good bits really difficult and not worth it.
Macklemore’s song, “Same Love,” with Ryan Lewis, featuring Mary Lambert, tells the younger generation about discrimination against gays, homophobia, and inequality. The song calls out people who want freedom, where our country came from, and what are religion says to show how if we don’t accept gays, there is a lot we can never have. Macklemore is disappointed with the way hip hop and rap talk about gay people without realizing how difficult they are making gay’s lives. It is also great when Macklemore practically asks religious people how exactly they do not support gay rights, and why they believe it is wrong because God is supposed to love everyone. Macklemore gives his honest opinion on how he feels everyone should be equal, and there are no “buts” or “ifs.” I stand by his opinion about love being love no matter what. Macklemore’s song, “Same Love,” he talks about societies false ideas of gays, the way the term “gay” is used in hip hop music, and that we are not equal until we allow gay rights with a huge change at heart.
He says, “no freedom ‘til we're equal, damn right i support it” (Macklemore). What this line means is that justice and freedom is only fair when everyone is equal. He supports everyone being equal. “Whatever god you believe in we come from the same strip away the fear underneath it's all the same love”(Macklemore). He is saying everyone is equal and should have liberty and freedom. Lastly he says, “its human rights for everyone, there is no difference.” (Macklemore). He believes everyone should be treated the same no matter what.
Teenagers will always struggle with what is right and wrong. But Where Is The Love provides an outlet of all the hardships and spreads the message that love towards each other will end the hate leading onto the path were ethics are valued. Another song about love, values and the correct ethics towards each other is same love by Macklemore released on the album the heist in 2012. Like where is the love by the black eyed peas Macklemore’s same love also talks about how youth can be influenced to form beliefs but focuses towards the prejudice around
look and point at gay couples, it is human nature to feel singled out and targeted. This song states that We are beautiful no matter what they say/ Yes, words can't bring us down, oh no. It is trying to help the stereotypes understand that being beautiful is more than the image, it is the inner beauty. Gay people may become ashamed of there orientation because the socially acceptable way to be is straight. This is a double standard of the lyrics, because it states that even if people do act in rude and unkind manners, the gay people will still consider themselves beautiful. But this
In her song “If I Were a Boy,” Beyonce argues that many women are trapped in bad relationships and never take the time to question how they truly desire to be treated. To confirm this, Beyonce is attempting to look at her unhealthy relationship as if she were in her significant others shoes. She makes an effort to develop an understanding of what it is like to be the man in the relationship, and see how he can just passively mistreat a girl. Beyonce later discovers that she would treat others how she would want to be treated because she understands how it is to be hurt by someone. She also finds that most guys do not care whether or not their significant others are suffering because of their actions. Beyonce establishes credibility for her lyrics by using the three appeals: pathos, ethos, and logos. These appeals are utilized to influence her audience, not let a man control their lives, but live there lives the way they want, and find a man that can treat them better than they have been treated in their past. Also, the use of repetition and form are used to establish her points within the song. Lastly, she wants her listeners to visualize how it could be if they were the other person, and question whether or not their outlook would be different.
One way he gets his topic across in the text is through his use of symbolism. This song follows the early years of a young Macklemore and his pursuit for identification through the means of consumerism. Macklemore starts the song by saying that he bought his first pair of $100 Nikes to impressing his friends and make him feel better. He explained it as being in an "air bubble" "momma, this air bubble right here, it 's gonna make me fly" meaning that he was already totally submerged in the consumerism culture at only seven years old. The air bubble symbolises how he has been sucked into consumerism and he is trapped in this
The lyrics from this part of the song also relate to people who are feminists or what Conley writes as “a consciousness raising movement to get people to understand that gender is an organizing principle of life. The underlying belief that women and men should be accorded equal opportunities and respect.” However, everything in this song says that it is easier to be a boy because in a relationship it is easier for them to not care. In turn the song is demeaning the feminists in the world who want to have equal rights or opportunities. Along with those who believe you can put yourself first or make their own rules even if it's not what society deems as an actual rule to fit in. We don’t have to be under men in society, but we can’t just assume that we know everything about boys. Especially for a song that follows the societal norms of what a boy should do in a relationship. We have to see that yes boys tend to do this, but it doesn’t mean you could be any better if you were suddenly that
