My interpretation of Critical Thinking has been challenged by the author of this passage by the dean of college arts and sciences of Santa Carla University author and narrator Peter A Facione. I have come to the conclusion that my initial thoughts of what critical thinking was way off. The author has the reader asking himself questions, and forming scenarios where we actually had to use critical thinking. I think this method of understanding is a great way to teach new readers. Right off the bat Facione has us questioning our initial thoughts. I have a feeling this technique is going to be one of our tools as we come to understand what exactly Critical Thinking is.
However, issues such as conformity and disagreement, external validity, and assumptions of single explanations are likely to come between us and our personal desires and thoughts. These issues no matter what their determining the way we see the world and more so, are likely to decide what and whom we support. These issues, however, are either inborn or learned through the process of socialization and therefore are of significance to both the environment and our ways of operation. Therefore, there is need to award much importance to critical thinking and to stand by our decisions rather than the conformities of the rest who fall under our encryptions or
example is given how to apply each of the concepts to the world of nursing. Sullivan then in the conclusion section discusses a need for students to recognize the need to critically think, and to develop critical thinking skills of their own.
The outcome that I think will be the most challenging for me will probably be demonstrating critical thinking skills in response to readings/texts. That will probably be challenging because defining what appeals to the ethos, pathos, logos can get a tad bit confusing for me and sometimes I can mix things up. For example, if I think something is appealing to logic, in reality, it is appealing to emotions and values. Interpreting visual arguments can also be difficult due to the fact that interpreting is dependent on one's background knowledge and experiences. So the way I interpret something could be different to what someone else interprets.
Paul and Elder (1997) assert that intellectual roots of critical thinking are as ancient as its etymology, traceable to the teaching practice and vision of Socrates 2,500 years ago who discovered by a method of probing questioning that people could not rationally rationalize their confident claims to knowledge.
Having read this week's assigned materials, and having a clear understanding of what is meant by "critical thinking," why are employers making these comments?
Critical thinking is an intellectually disciplined process of diligently and skillfully applying, analyzing, and synthesizing information that can be gathered by way of observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication ("Defining Critical Thinking," 2017). Critical thinking is a skill that is imperative for individuals to hone as it can help to avoid problems. Unfortunately, not many individual perceive this to be an essential skill, therefore, a road of destruction lies head. In addition, we discussed the concept of tradeoffs. According to the text, tradeoffs are the choices that we have to make when we are faced with alternative objectives. As stated by the author, “you cant have your cake an eat it, too”(Hammond,
Critical thinking is a form of being able to take on a subject or situation and being able to distinguish the matter in a more analytical point of view, in which your able to question what is being said. Finding different ways to come up with conclusion as to the topic or question is about. According to Carroll, “Hansen’s report is particularly interesting because it’s contrary to his previous position indicating that he is able to separate his professional ego from his scientific conclusions and change his mind right out in public” As we think critically our ideas and suggestions could be at risk to be questioned as well, there could be times were most people do not agree with what we ourselves have come up with through our thinking and analyzing.
I would describe critical thinking as thinking outside the box, digging a little deeper. According to the text on Think Smarter : Critical Thinking to Improve Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills, critical thinking is a purposeful method for enhancing your thoughts beyond your automatic, everyday way of thinking. (Kallet,2014)
Critical Thinking is becoming more understanding to me. I have always been an open minded thinker, whenever it came to looking at different point of views on whatever is in front of me .My mom always told me that I challenged everything she gave me to do, or told me to do. She told me I was very stubborn. If I asked a question and she gave me a answer, I would always question her why! I never knew it was a trait of, what I know now as being a Critical Thinker. Looking at Fair-Minded Thinkers, I possess the quality of having courage. The Courage to question what I was taught growing up, to seek truth and logic in beliefs and everything I knew at this point in my life. I was always taught that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Not saying I don’t believe in god, but I questioned that after reading about Egyptian history. After about 6 months of reading and research I found some very uneasy things that needed some attention.
Some people say that critical thinking is a difficult thing to do, but for me it is quite easy. Before taking this reading class, I have never “thought about my thinking” before. I am the type of person to contemplate everything, no matter if it is for a purchase, a decision, or even about what to eat. The book Learning to Think Things Through, has showed me tips to think more critically.
Throughout life we are challenged and we encounter an abundance of issues or problems that we need to solve. Some problems that can be resolved effortlessly and efficiently but other obstacles may require a more critical and creative thinking to overcome. When it comes down to thinking to solve problems we depend on our thinking or give some regurgitated answer that we just read. But “much of our thinking, left to itself, is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed, or downright prejudiced” (TCTC, 2016). The purpose of critical thinking is so that
Attending this class was pretty nerve reacting, English is my worst subject and I tend not to do so well on it. I told myself that I need to get better at English because it matters and maybe one day I’ll make it my favorite subject. What I think of critical thinking still reminds the same, I believe that critical thinking is for someone to think outside the box. By thinking outside the box, it makes you be more open to new ideas and you’re not afraid of taking a risk. Also by making you seek to more information and the information you get helps you have a better understanding of the material. Critical thinking is very important to our society because every person uses critical thinking in every aspect of their life by thinking, writing, interacting with others, and reading etc.
“Critical Thinking is the ability and willingness to assess claims and make objective judgments on the bases of well-supported reason and evidence, rather than emotion or anecdote” (Wade, Travris, & Garry, 2015, p13). “It is a way of thinking in which you don't simply accept all arguments and conclusions you are exposed to but rather have an attitude involving questioning such arguments and conclusions” (Study.com, 2017). I believe I am a critical thinker because I’m open-minded and respect other’s opinion. I look at things from a broad perspective. In my past, I’ve experienced life lessons, mostly things that were anecdotal or proverbial in nature. My decision was made without any empirical basis, which did nothing to ensure whether it was right or wrong.
