What Is Multi-Tasking?

In another study done by Se-Hoon Jeong & Yoori Hwang, two professors who teach at Korea University and Mynoji University, they attempt to prove to readers that multi-tasking hinders our recalling skills, comprehension and reading skills. In this experiment, one key element both professors decided to do was separate people into two groups- one control group and one group with a changing variable. With the group with the changing variable, they had the task to multi-task. Both groups were then tested to see their recalling and comprehension skills dependent on a reading that was assigned to each group. At the end of the experiment, both groups outcomes were then compared. Results showed that “multitasking had negative effects on cognitive outcome,” (Se-Hoon Jeong & Yoori Hwang 611). These results show readers that due to multitasking and the inability to focus one topic rather than several, the group that multi-tasked couldn’t function well enough compared to the group that did not multitask. It’s not undeniable that multi-tasking can help us succeed and finish our tasks in a timelier manner- but how is the quality of our own finished products? Are we accomplishing what we need to accomplish? An act such as multi-tasking gives us opportunities to balance our everyday lives but instead we let it hurt us. Multi-tasking affects us socially, allowing us not to communicate with others due to how busy we are. It affects us in our cognitive skills, disallowing us from processing and using the information stored in our brain to achieve our fullest potential. Limiting and regulating how and when we multi-task can help us reach our full potential. Learning to take on specific tasks at a time will help us appreciate the things we work on for what they truly are.
