Oscars: Where’s the diversity?

And the winner is….”insert famous A list white actor name” congratulations! This was the unwritten script that every presenter followed for this year’s Academy Awards also known as the Oscars. For the second year in a row, there were no black nominees in any of the four acting categories. So many questions were raise after the nominations were release to the public for instance; people were asking if the Oscars had discrimination toward black films? How much diversity does the judging panel have? Why are black actors not receiving the recognition they deserve? Etc. For example, at the 60th annual Oscars in 1988, Eddie murphy realized there’s not a lot of black actor nominated that night, so he said some comments to the audience in which was “I just feel that we have to be recognized as a people. I just want you to know that I’m going to give this award, but black people will not ride the caboose of society, and we will not bring up the rear anymore. I want you to recognize us.” (Mediaite) Since those remarks, career had hit some highs and lows. It’s hard for him to find work nowadays.
Jada Pinkett Smith was one of the few black actors to voice her opinion about this year’s Oscar nominations. One of the comments she said in a video she posted on her Facebook was directly towards the black community. She said “Maybe it’s time that we recognize that if we love and respect and acknowledge ourselves in the way in which we are asking others to do, that that is the place of true power.”(EW.com) She also stated “Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power — and we are a dignified people, and we are powerful. Whitewashing is when white actors play the role of non-white characters. This phenomenon is scary because it’s taking away opportunities from minority actors (who are more fitting for the role and already has the look without any alterations.) and it can feed into the theory that white actors are more of a financial gain for movie studios. Is there a financial risk in casting minority actors? The Bunche Center’s 2014 Hollywood Diversity Report found that median global box office revenue peaked for films with a 21-30% minority cast share; revenue was lower for films with both a smaller and larger minority cast share.
