We probably know discrimination occurs in any situation, anywhere. I think discrimination depends on individual reasons or social problems because everything around us can make us fall prey to discrimination. Today, we know discrimination of race is unlawful, but it is still existent in some people, and it gets skillfully concealed under some form, or another. For example, in the essay “Black Man Ponders His Power to Alter Public” by Brent Staples, the author is a black man. He explains a few encounters in which he has been a victim of discrimination because of his skin color. I love America, because this country includes many different races; it makes me think of the beautifully-diverse prairie flowers. I thought
Discrimination by race is undoubtedly a large problem plaguing our nation, affecting the country since its founding in 1776, and even further in the past. It has unjustly hurt or helped many people, such as when employers are selecting applicants to be employees. Many people would rather hire or more easily trust the white man rather than the black man, despite both being the same in every way except skin pigment. This racism isn’t limited to blacks and whites, either. People originating from Asia, the Middle East, South America and Europe are also discriminated against in the same way blacks are, though with different methods of attack and stereotypes. This overall makes our country a very unwelcome country to be in, because the majority dislikes, on a wide spectrum from a distaste to full-on loathing, anyone who has a different colour or is from a different region.
One example that racial discrimination is still going on is the fact that African Americans do not get the same housing opportunities as white people do. The village of Garden City, Long Island, New York, has been discriminating against Latinos and African Americans and did not allow them housing in the neighborhood (Winzelberg). Some people might say ‘They have a right to allow who they want in their neighborhood and who they do not want, but this is America and people have a right to
In the United States today discrimination is still an issue in society. As a society progress has definitely been made, but it has never fully gone away. Some of the most discriminatory action takes place in the American justice system. Young minority males between the ages of 25-29 are subject to being treated the most unfairly while whites of the same age are still being treated better than any race in this country. African American and Hispanic males are being incarcerated at higher rates than white males in America. Not only are minorities being incarcerated more, but also they are subject to harsher sentencing terms, fall victim to police racial profiling, and have disparities in the war on drugs. Also whites are still the dominant
It is an incredibly big issue that our society needs to change. This article talks about the individual level of racism through the employer’s prejudices and the structural level through minorities not getting hired or paid the same which will most likely result in later issues (can’t afford college, can’t afford necessities, resorting to crime, etc.
We have issues: more specifically , the United States has issues, continuous and all-encompassing issues of racial inequality. The United States is experiencing a outburst of racism, as can be seen from the 2014 killings of two unarmed African-American men, to the brutality of white supremacy in Charleston and the string of arsons in black churches across the South. Of course, it’s nothing new for a nation with a long history of extreme racist violence—the most recent lynching-related death occurred in 1981, hardly a lifetime ago, when Michael Donald was hanged by two members of the Ku Klux Klan. The United States, however, continues to avoid its history on race, refusing to confront its past in a “post-racial,” “colorblind” society, and that policy of systemic ignorance is particularly strong when mention of racial equality is brought up. Although the concept of equality has never truly existed in this world, as can be traced back to the very beginnings of recorded history we see the nobles ruling the commoners, conquerors reigning over the conquered, the will of man dominating women; the United States needs to acknowledge the fact that racial inequality still exists within our country and has in no way progressed towards betterment.
Discrimination still exists in today’s society, throughout the work force, or any other source of social interaction. Our current ways of interaction and thinking affects our social behavior and emotions towards others. We tend to compare ourselves through the means of racial differentiation. We label ourselves as the black community, the white community and even the yellow community. Blacks would be accredited to African americans, the whites would the Europeans and the yellow class would fall anywhere between the Spanish and Asian community. The consequences of this ideology includes segregation and controversy between different ethnicities. One race would ultimately believe that they superior to the other which then leads to suppression such as slavery or yet again the Holocaust. We want
As can be seen, people try to stop discrimination, but it still occurs based on color, race, gender, and actions and people do not realize they are being racist. Even though people fight against discrimination, there are many people being mistreated based on color and race. The people being discriminated for their color, race and gender, they are often ignored. People that are a different race than white seem to hide themselves from society. All people should be treated nice in an equal
Discrimination is alive and well in America. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines discrimination as “the practice of unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other people or groups of people”. The article “FOBs vs. Twinkies” written by Grace Hsiang discusses intraracial discrimination amongst Asian Americans. It describes the divide between the Asian Americans called “FOBs” (fresh off the boat) that cling to their ethnic heritage, and those called “twinkies” that reject Asian culture and try to be seen as American. The article “Black Men in Public Spaces” by Brent Staples describes discrimination by giving a personal account of walking through public spaces at night and innocently scaring a woman. She silently stereotyped that he was a mugger, murderer, or rapist because he was black. This experience stayed with the author for his entire life. These two
As children grow up, they become the person they turn out to be because of experiences and the culture and society they grew up in. Nations are affected in the same sense because the people living in a nation affect how the nation is influenced and builds its character.
With the advancement that is available in all fields of work because certain demographics are able to get jobs over others due to race. Minorities aren’t rewarded the same opportunities that other races such as white Americans are rewarded. African Americans have a more difficult road to travel than white Americans. Social inequality may be created or maintained in a variety of ways including prejudice, discrimination, and/or segregation and minorities are being treated unequal (2009). Discrimination refers to the unequal treatment of people because they are members of a particular group (Williams, 2009). Whites have the opportunity to move up every step of the way without having any experience or education while blacks have to have the experience and education along with working hard in the organization. Blacks experience a lot of discrimination in America, but some do not see it the way others do. It is like blacks do not have equal rights with whites and it is a big issue. Yes, racism still exists in Corporate America and that is why people still speak on the
Things that have happened in the past made an enormous impact on our world that nobody will forget. Discrimination was terrible on the black people that lived during The Great Depression. There was so much that went on during this horrific time in history. Minority workers got paid very little, and did not get treated how they should have been treated. People discriminated black men and women for no reason at all. In an article entitled, “Prejudice During The Great Depression” the author stated, “Before the great depression, most of the African-American population worked on railroads, steel mills, coal mines or on farms owned by white land owner (jobs that needed physical labour and got very little pay). But during the great depression the white bosses fired many of their black workers just because there were other white people that needed a job.” Discrimination is everywhere we go. Whether it is in the workplace, school, or even the safety of your own home. We need to stand up for those who need it most. The people that do not get treated fairly because of their race or belief, need us and need the support from those who have the support. Many people are suffering from discrimination everyday and do not stand up for themselves. We need to find those people and reach out far to them, seek them, and want to help them. We need to help them every step of the way. Though sometimes it is hard, we need to do what it right and stop all of the discrimination going on all around us all of the time. In an article, “Minority Discrimination in the Workplace” the author said, “Discrimination against members of any minority group, whether based on race, color or other classification, occurs when members of such a group are treated differently from other employees, solely because they are among that group.” Issues involving minority have been around for too long. This world has had a lot of times in
Although several years have passed since the civil rights movement, there continues to be discrimination against people of color. This discrimination is even more prominent towards people of color who have mental or physical disabilities. More
For centuries now, African Americans have been discriminated against, especially by Caucasians. With time progressing, it is assumed that some people would get over the fact that African Americans are equal to whites, get accustomed to it, and let go of the hatred. Unfortunately, that has yet to happen, which is why discrimination is present in many ways, as in: through the process of job interviews, dealing with the law, or being displayed as criminals and thugs on television when someone in the African American community has done something vs. when a white person does the same thing but is made to seem like they are harmless. Those are just few of many other things that contribute to discrimination.
“I believe discrimination still exists in society and we must fight it in every form,” as stated by Andrew Cuomo the current governor of New York. All throughout history, discrimination has been an underlying issue and is one that must be stopped and fixed. Throughout time African-Americans have been the most notable victims of discrimination. Dating back to the early seventeenth century, blacks have been discriminated and enslaved for absolutely no reason. There have been many attempts to end the discrimination, but as hard as people try this is an issue that seems unconquerable. Despite the fact that the Jim Crow era has passed, it is evident from history and peoples experiences that racial discrimination still does exist today.
