Skim and Share Fourteen: Turning Enemies into Friends Sacks’ Turning Enemies into Friends essay was inspiring. After reading, I started to think about how I can share what I have just read with everyone. In the beginning of the reading I was not sure if I was going to agree with Sacks after I read, “…forgiveness leads to reconciliation. Reconciliation leads to friendship” (507). The idea of forgiveness ultimately leading to friendship seems outlandish. I have forgiven many people for their actions against me and vice versa. However, typically when a line is crossed, a friendship is nearly impossible to achieve. Although, after reading the rest of the essay, I realized how much I agree with Sacks’ stance on forgiveness and conversations. …show more content…
“Will I bring one victim of the Holocaust back to life by hating Germans?” (Sacks 511) Though Sacks essay focused more on religious conflicts, I immediately thought of a conflict that is going on right now in America. I do not always know how I feel about the Black Lives Matter movement but I know that hating police officers, or people of another race will not bring back the lives of those were killed because of their race or actions. Another question Sacks asked that I can relate to the Black Lives Matter topic is, “Can you discern my unity in your diversity?” (512) I took this question to mean that though we are all different we are, simultaneously, all the same. We have to be able to recognized that through our differences we all deserve to be treated equally. Police offers, people of different race, nationalities and religions, murders, saints, etc. are all people who deserved to be respected, and listened
Forgiveness is important when ending a feud. When people forgive each other, they realize that it provides more happiness than hatred does. In the short story, “The Interlopers” by Saki, Georg and Ulrich have a change of heart after a three generation feud.
The theme of friendship courses through Chaim Potok’s book, The Chosen. Potok desires to show the reader what a strong friendship looks like and how it stands up to the test of time. When two people know each other well and spend a lot of time together, there are bound to be misunderstandings, fights, and other trials. Yet God says in His word “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (New American Standard Bible, Proverbs 27:17) Even when friendships are difficult, they can “sharpen” the people involved in the friendship, like in the case of Danny and Reuven. Danny and Reuven’s friendship lasts through Danny’s irrational behavior, Reuven’s outbursts of anger, and Reb Saunders’s absurd beliefs.
For decades there has been a great deal of controversy over the importance of African American citizens. The Souls of Black Folks, by W.E.B. DuBois, and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement both have multiple similarities that deserve to be thoroughly examined. Although DuBois’ work and the modern day movement occurred decades apart, some common similarities include: the realization in the black souls that they are seen differently, the lack of fairness towards black people, and the great divide between black and white citizens.
“Black lives matter,””White lives matter,””All lives matter” are proclamations manufactured by numerous anti-racism organizations today. Failing to squander racism, the United States continues to make bounds towards racial equality. Preceding the American Revolution racism plagued the world and continues to corrupt the world today. Today activist comparable to Martin Luther King, Jr. continue to combat racism and seek an end, to all, racism. In effort to clear the obfuscated minds of the clergymen King stains Letter from a Birmingham Jail with pathos, allusion, and antithesis to explain the cruel, unjust , harsh reality of the world in the time.
Without forgiveness, relationships will not last. Everyone makes mistakes. “Each of us is hurt, defended, flawed, and will inevitably make mistakes. Having this perspective doesn’t mean we should sit back and withstand abuse. However, if we want to enjoy a lasting relationship with someone we value and choose to spend our lives with, we may want to grow our ability to forgive” (Firestone). Self forgiveness is also necessary for complete fulfillment in life. In the short story, The Outcast of Poker Flat, the characters had all sinned and were discarded from the city by the townsfolk. During the journey to start a new life, the characters learned to trust and love one another. Forgiveness is given to each other and they even learn to forgive themselves. “And when pitying fingers brushed the snow from their wan faces, you could scarcely have told from the equal peace that dwelt upon them which was she that had sinned” (Harte). In the end, forgiveness had given the characters peace. Relationships require forgiveness to thrive and survive. Even in time of peril, the characters found peace in forgiveness. The relationships that were built on the short journey comforted the characters at the end and the sorrow of death was solaced by the forgiveness they had
Thematic Statement: Forgiving someone for their mistake can make yourself free of anger and bitterness.
As human beings we are often reluctant to let go of our anger and unwilling to forgive others. This becomes especially true in the case of loved ones or family members. The poem, “How Do We Forgive Our Fathers?,” written by Dick Lourie, addresses the different dilemmas associated with a child forgiving his/her father. In his six-stanza poem, the poet discusses how a child should forgive their father for traumatic events imposed on the child. This includes reasons for forgiveness, appropriate time to forgive, and whether or not to even forgive at all. Detailed through the different stanzas, the poem suggests that until one learns how to appropriately forgive another for wrongful behavior, they will never be able to let go of resentment and
Ask yourself, if a policeman pulled you over, would you assume automatically that the crime was the color of your skin? And would you wonder if that crime could cost you your life? The unanimous answer should be no, but it is guaranteed that within different races and communities, the answer will differ. Because of this, it is clear that different people of different races get treated differently.
The general topic of forgiveness has received a magnitude of attention and research on a conceptual level in recent years. Hall and Fincham consistently noted, however, that self-forgiveness had little to no empirical study or research documented and believe this is a critical piece to an individual’s overall emotional health. In an effort to stimulate additional research on the
Multicultural competence is the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures. There are four major components present when discussing multicultural competence: (1) the individual (me) must be aware of one’s own cultural views, (2) know ones attitude towards cultural differences, (3) Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews, and (4) having cross-cultural skills (Adapted from class 2 and 3 definitions handout, as adapted from Pope, R.L. & Reynolds, A. L. (1997)). How does one gain this competency though? Is it ever truly obtainable? I would argue that every person, no matter upbringing or background, has the ability to become more multicultural competent. This semester we were
“Black Lives Matter” —an intended progression in society without a hierarchy, merely marching forward by spur of the people. Started by three sisters who continue to keep the organization a chapter-based, left wing social justice operation, it can best be described as “Not a moment, but a movement” by those that follow it. The case that began this outcry involved a man —George Zimmerman— whom, according to Lizette Alvarez and Cara Buckley (2013), “was found not guilty [of] second-degree murder [and] was also acquitted of manslaughter, a lesser charge.” (para. 1). Since its initial start in 2013, the movement follows and protests against police brutality and civil injustice towards individuals of the Black minority; however, this is a prime example of hate breeding hate as the movement, has opened a new floodgate full of antipathy aimed towards the White-community and Law Enforcement Officials. In short, the initial idea of “Black Lives Matter” —which is to bring civil justice to the Black-community— is a good concept, but the execution by its adherents are, ironically, bigoted; the movement needs to either evolve its state of thought or disperse before it further segregates America.
Racial prejudice against minorities who live in America has been here since before America became a whole and it can be worked toward the change of the harsh realities many individuals face. Racial Injustice is something that numerous people confront each day and is likewise delineated through the novels Just Mercy and To Kill A Mockingbird. This world has made many innovative advancements in the last fifty years, but the one thing that hasn’t been conquered is to root out racism, which can be shown to be widespread in many societies. Fear and anger are one of the leading factors that contribute to the opposition of justice and to truly make a commitment to justice one must first overcome that
“Forgiveness, assert Fincham and his colleagues, can help restore more benevolent and cooperative goals to relationships” Everett L. Worthington, Jr.(2004). New Science of Forgiveness.
Reconciliation is stated as “restoration of a state of peace to the relationship, where the entities are at least not harming each other, and can begin to be trusted not to do so in future, which means that revenge is foregone as an option” (Santa-Barbara, 174). This definition is a starting point in understanding reconciliation but does not address the spirit of forgiveness involved. It is important to recognize harms that others have done but it becomes necessary to portray these in a positive and understanding manner. This supplies the persecutor with an image that is not so negative and “monster-like” but also provides for the victim acknowledgement that there has been harm done. For reconciliation to take place, all parties involved
Some people wanna be doctors because they like to help people that are injured. Doctors are really helpful people. They won't rest until your better and well rested. Some people wanna be artists because they wanna express their creativity. When people are artists they express their creativity on their work. Both jobs work very hard in their work.
