What is Ski Jumping?
Ski jumping is a winter sport in which skiers go down a ramp, jump, and attempt to fly as far as possible. Points are awarded to the jumpers for both style and the distance of the jump. (n.a., Ski Jumping, 2014) Ski jumping originated in Norway. The first known ski jumper was Norwegian Lieutenant Olaf Rye. In 1809, he completed a 9.5 metre jump to show courage to his fellow soldiers. By 1862, ski jumping was becoming more popular and skiers were jumping larger and longer jumps. The first ski jumping competition was held in Trysil, Norway on January 22nd, 1867. The Olympic Winter Games has held a ski jumping event since the 1st games in Chamonix Mont-Blanc in 1924. The Large Hill Competition joined the Olympics in 1964. (n.a., 2013)
In the Olympics and FIS (International Ski Federation), style points are divided into three phases, the flight, landing and outrun. A perfect jump is awarded a maximum of 20 points. During the stages, five judges deduct points based on theoretical perfect style for each phase. For fight and landing, judges can deduct no more than 5 points, and for the outrun the judges can deduct no more than 7 points. Deductions can be in half point increments. The highest and lowest judge’s scores are discarded and the remaining 3 scores are totaled for a jumpers style points. This is to ensure that the judges don’t cheat by scoring a competitor higher or lower than they should be actually scored. (Doyle, 2014)

Now before I jump into this essay, I will first give you a background on the history of the sport. The original concept that the snowboard is based upon is the “snurfer”. Developed on Christmas Day, 1965 by Sherman Poppen in Muskegon, Michigan. In 1968, Tom Sims furthered the sport by developing the very first snowboard. Then in 1977 Jake Burton Carpenter developed the first bindings and changed the sport forever.
Skiing has been found to be easier for many people. One of the main reasons is it is very similar to other sports like; ice skating, rollerblading and running. The ability to balance on a
One of the most important lessons I have learned from skiing is that I am most successful when I fully commit. As I got older and started doing more intense tricks and bigger cliffs, I started to see a trend. Whenever I dropped into a jump, rail, or cliff unsure of what I was going to do, or not ready to fully commit to the trick, I had a tendency to end up on the ground
I started skiing when I was just five. I started taking lessons and really learning the basics when I was seven. When I first started skiing I did not enjoy it at all. I was cold, tired and did not like falling down. After many lessons and skiing on my own, I started to enjoy skiing more. I skied with friends and family a few times a year. The elementary school I attended offered a winter ski and snowboard program. Every Tuesday of every week from January to March my entire school would travel to King Pine Ski Resort in Madison, NH. We would take ski lessons offered at the mountain. During those years when I was able to leave school and be brought to this mountain and ski with friends was when I started to look at skiing less as hobby and more as a passion. Skiing was not just an

Snowboarding has an amazing background and explanation of how it came to be. It all started with the people who surfed and skateboarded. They wanted something similar to do in the winter. Sherman Poppen was the creator of the snurfer (an early snowboard) in 1965. Sherman was one of the skateboarders who wanted to surf but lived in Michigan. One day he nailed two skis together and attached a rope with a handle to the front thus creating the snurfer. Sherman then called his friends, who were engineers for the Brunswick Corporation and asked them to make some of the snurfers. The Brunswick Corporation made skis, bowling balls, bowling alleys, and bowling pins. The snurfer took the world by storm, but people wanted a safe way to ride. Eventually Jake Burton Carpenter started making a new model called the ski board and this was the first company for snowboards. Jake Burton was a Stockbroker who fell in love with snowboarding and decided to take the risk and start making them. He became the founder of the
My background behind Nordic skiing is fairly simple. At the age of four, I was put on my first pair of nordic skis. My family does not have any relations to cross country skiing, besides touring around. At age six, I was signed up for my first race. I vaguely remember my first races as a child. I spent my childhood racing for a club team (Polar Bear Ski Club) and enjoyed racing in the Bill Koch (Olympian, 1976) League. I adored the sport and kept with it throughout my childhood
The 2018 Winter Olympics are here, which means that snowboarders, skiers, sledders, and many other people get to show off their skills in the most prolific sports events of all time. Winning gold is every athletes’ goal and dream, but just making it into the Olympics is a great achievement itself, and shows how skilled you are. The events, competitors, and history of the Olympics are all huge topics that can be explored and elaborated on endlessly. A single event can be used for many essays and reports, which this essay is an example of.
Alpine skiing is one type of sport in the Olympic. Specifically, racers who ski down slopes the fastest win. However, the competitors must go through events before ending at the finish line. Examples of the events consist of the salmon, a course that requires short tight turns, the giant slalom, widely spaced turns, and the SUPER-giant slalom, which has no turns and runs downhill. All slamons occur above sea level. Turning tight corners is challenging in the alpine skiing. The salmons get easier. Bobsleighing is another sport in the Olympics that relates to skiing. Additionally, athletes race down an icy track on a sled. The tracks ranges from 1,260 feet or above sloping down to 1,000 feet or below. Bobsledding requires control over the sleigh. In addition, ice makes bobsledding slippery. Snowboarding on slopes also consist in the Olympics. Furthermore, snowboarders ride down a course begins at an altitude of 760 meters and ends at 650 meter. The style of snowboarding depends a lot. Snowboarding takes a lot of hand-eye coordination. Therefore, many types of sports need high elevation and snow or
The Olympics is one of the few activities that brings the world together. The Olympics first started in the ancient times, dating back to 776 BC. They were first dedicated to Olympian gods, but modern games are to give athletes an opportunity to show their skill, and for others to enjoy watching them (“History”). The first modern world wide olympics was held in Athens, Greece in 1896, having 14 countries participate, with over 200 total athletes.
I now am able to say that I love skiing. My uncle and I buy season passes to Chestnut Mountain every year, and go nearly every weekend of what feels like an incredibly short ski season. Two years after my first day of skiing, my uncle got me into ski racing at Chestnut Mountain. It is an amateur league called Nastar. Nastar consists of a starting gate at the top, many racing gates in the middle that you have to ski around, and a finish line at the end. It is very exhilarating as you ski your fastest and brush the gates with your body as you ski down. You can even earn a small bronze, silver, or gold medal if you get a fast enough time. Overall, I am very proud that I was able to conquer Rookie’s Ridge on day 1, and can safely say that skiing is my favorite thing to do in the
Beginner standards should be 2’7” for kids or adults that are just getting into jumping (Event). Novice standards should be around 2’11” and that is for kids who had begun but want to advance a little bit without going on to training (Event). Training standards should be around 3’3” and for training you should be advancing from novice beginner and getting ready to move on to preliminary (Event). Preliminary standards should be set at 3’7” and the rider should have received at least four trials at the training level (Event). Intermediate standards are usually set at or around 3’11” and these people at least have had three trials at the preliminary level and no more than twenty penalties of any sort during cross-country (Event). Advanced is the hardest and the standards should be set at 4’1” should have at least tried 3 trials at the NQA for the intermediate level and no more than twenty jumping penalties for cross-country
Have you ever wanted to ski? If so, read on. I will tell you about some great places to ski, types of trails, and skiing powder. Skiing is a fun thing to do with your spare time, but it can be difficult.
First and foremost skiing helps you conquer fear. Everyone and I mean everyone is scared their first day on the mountain. You have to get all bundled up in these special clothes to keep you warm and big ski boots that hurt your feet and are hard to walk in. Don't forget your gloves otherwise, your fingers will fall off. Once you get past the fear of the cold you rent your skis and you have to get past the fear of the ski lift ride to the top of the mountain. You don't expect the ride to the top of the mountain to be scary so you get on the lift. Then about five minutes into the ride to the top of the mountain you start to get tons of butterflies in your stomach as you look back over your shoulder and see the cars in the parking lot get smaller and smaller and the buildings start to disappear as you reach the summit. When you step out of the gondola/chairlift you are at about 11,000ft elevation depending which mountain you are on, and sometimes you are above the clouds. It's a euphoric view, but unfortunately, this is where the real fear starts to kick in. As you put your skis on and get ready to go down the mountain you have to conquer the fear of each turn and the fear of going down different trails with each having a different difficulty level. It's amazing, once you get the basic motions down and conquer the fears that come with them you’ll be flying down the mountain carving every trail in sight (green, blue and black). Being able to overcome fears of skiing can help you in your real life. I just recently went on a trip to Wolf Creek Colorado and climbed to the top of the largest peak
The Olympics are an international sporting event that is held every four years where people from around the world send their best athletes to compete and see who the best of the best is when it comes to sports. The Olympics date back to Ancient Greece where their basic events included track and field, which are like men’s high jump which is the topic of this report. In this problem we are looking at the data collected from the gold medalists in the men’s high jump in from the years 1932-1980, excluding the years 1940 and 1944 where the Olympics were not held due to World War II.
