About 95% of Americans recently professed a belief in God or a higher power and 9 out of 10 people also said that they pray, most of them (67%–75%) on a daily basis (Gallup & Lindsay, 1999). The interest in spirituality and treatment has been growing, particularly for the treatment of alcoholics (Kurtz & White, 2015). Spirituality impacts how clinicians practice and patients' decision-making (Peteet, Balboni, Michael, 2013). Mindfulness, a spiritual practice has been shown to enhance clinician self-care and equanimity (Peteet, Balboni, Michael, 2013). Understanding how different ethnic groups view themselves in terms of spirituality can aid treatment providers in their cultural competence and in their decision-making regards to the type of treatment. …show more content…

Spirituality plays a very important role in African American culture. As we know, traditional healing practices and spirituality are closely related. This deep spirituality comes from their motherland African culture but was reinforce during the rough periods of slavery and enforced discrimination. Spirituality makes people of believing that only God is responsible for health, illness, and healing. Thus, spiritual beliefs provide comfort and are an effective way for remaining healthy, coping, and healing (Johnson, Elbert-Avila, Tulsky, 1992). Giger, Davidhizar, and Turner (1992) recalled that a number of African Americans still linking good health with luck or success and disease or illness with bad luck, fate,
A spiritual and psychological inventory can be useful in helping someone to determine their current state of wellness. Kathleen Dowling Singh (2000) talks about how a spiritual assessment is helpful when people are close to dying as they begin to honestly and urgently examine their lives. Singh (2000) also suggests that regardless of how much time we have left to live, answering the questions in a spiritual inventory will help provide direction to our lives. The following questions were developed for this purpose and were used for an interview, the responses from the interview follows in Appendix A.
Substance abuse providers that believe spirituality and religion is one in the same, may hold the belief that an individual that is an atheist or agnostic will not have the opportunity to acquire spiritual opportunities when participating in alcohol and addiction programs (Sussman et al., 2013). In addition, these substance abuse providers may believe that when an individual that eliminates alcohol and drug abuse without the intervention of spiritual assistance, such as a Higher Power, they may believe that the individual will not have the capability to achieve and maintain balance within their sobriety and recovery. Sussman et al. (2013) suggests that these substance abuse providers unknowingly engage in a thought process that includes stereotypes. Suggesting that individuals, who engage in spiritual behaviors that do include a Higher Power, are more deserving of achieving sobriety and recovery because they are practicing by being involved with working the 12-step program, thus, making them more righteous in obtaining a blessing from their Higher Power. Noteworthy, the term spirituality is often linked with religion with no specific boundaries out of lack of knowledge. Engaging in a spiritual practice that allows an individual to have a spiritual solution that is higher than them and gives them hope has a significant influence on alcohol and drug abuse. Gedge and Querney (2014) describe discussing spirituality with
Evidence has linked a strong relationship between spirituality and medicine. There is a positive correlation between a patient’s spirituality or religious commitment and health outcomes. A spiritual assessment as a part of a health assessment is a practical step to incorporating patient’s spiritual needs into practice. The FICA Tool and HOPE Questions provide serve to assist clinicians in the spiritual assessment process. By examining the research done using these tools, it has been determined that the FICA Tool is easy to use and provides basic data on a patient’s spirituality. The FICA tool is both reliable and valid. The HOPE Questions are
other addiction treatments, such as Rational Recovery, fail to incorporate spirituality as a vital dimension in recovery due to the misunderstanding between religiosity and spirituality. The science community has always been at odds with religiosity and spirituality throughout history as research has shown. However, as we aim to become a more culturally competent society, looking at research that shows the importance of spiritual principles and practices in addiction recovery, should compel clinicians to incorporate it in other treatment programs besides twelve step programs. The inclusion of spirituality in addiction recovery should not be optional as it is not restricting one to a particular doctrine, but rather freeing an addict to obtain a healthy quality of life which is the ultimate goal. Treatment outcome predictors of African American culture are that one may attend church services weekly to praise and worship. While attending services one will depend on his or her belief in God and worship in faith with a commitment to themselves and God. Spirituality is a strategy one will use to cope with events or experiences within his or her life that is stressful. These strategies are considered external, support from religious beliefs such as prayer, reading the bible, and the reflections of one’s belief. Spirituality is also seen as an integral to health and a sense of one having the feeling of wholeness or well being (Britt, 2004).
After today’s class, I have inquired a whole new aspect of spiritual wellness and the guest speakers give me a chance to look what I have done so far in my freshman year as well as the way to develop my metaphysical wellness. Spiritual wellness is one of six dimensions of wellness, which by definition is a personal matter involving values and beliefs that provide a purpose in our life. In addition, spiritual well-being help us search the purpose of human existence and balance yourself with the rest of the world. I used to believe religion is another way to say spiritual wellness because of their similar definition. However, religion is only a small part of metaphysical well-being; it is all about the relationships between people, personal value,
Spirituality is considered one of the components of health and wellness, and is a contributory factor in the delivery of holistic care (O’Shea, Wallace, Griffin, & Fitzpatrick, 2011). It only makes sense for us nurses to study and research spirituality since the nursing profession is committed to holistic development, which includes the spiritual dimension of life. However, elements such as time constraints, short staffing, insufficient formal education related to spiritual assessment and confusion between spirituality and religion have led to spirituality becoming a disregarded component of care (O’Shea et al., 2011). Adolescence is a crucial time in the development of a person’s spiritual path (Benson & Roehlkepartain, 2008). Findings showed that most adolescents hold spiritual or religious beliefs already and choose to draw on them when experiencing life-changing events. Despite this information, healthcare professionals overlook the spiritual needs of adolescents (Neuman, 2011).
For health care providers to deliver the best holistic care that patients deserve, a thorough spiritual assessment must be included during their care. With more research showing a relationship between supporting a patient’s spirituality with their health and ability to cope with illness, it is now a requirement of organizations to include a spiritual assessment to maintain accreditation with The Joint Commission. The minimum required of a spiritual assessment by The Joint Commission is to determine the patient’s religion and
In my view, spiritual care means the patient needs care, support and treatment as a whole person that including spiritual or religious belief which help them to cope with illness and heal emotionally as well as physically. Spiritual care helps nurses to understand patients’ spiritual needs and provide care with comfort, hope, goodness and through their religious practices.
Spirituality is a delicate topic, and some may not be open to talking about their beliefs. Spirituality is generally understood to be an essential aspect of being human (Lyndo-Lam, 2012). Assessing the spiritual needs of patients is a key component in the nursing process. A compassionate and thoughtful nurse can make a patient feel more secure, making it easier for him to express his spirituality. The participation of both patient and health care provider is vital in promoting spiritual health. The main focus of a spiritual assessment is to gather information regarding the patient’s spiritual needs in order incorporate them into the plan of care, so as to treat
The two most common types of spirituality are intrinsic and extrinsic, which are ways of measuring spiritual maturity. Extrinsic spirituality is spirituality as a means, whereas intrinsic spirituality is a way to an end. (Content Pages) Both intrinsic and extrinsic spirituality have scales that correspond to how spiritual a person is. These scales are separate from each other but both equally important. (Content Pages) A study was taken of 898 students aged 17 to 26 measuring their intrinsic spirituality level and their mental states. The study found that students with high intrinsic spirituality were less depressed, anxious, and obsessive compulsive, and they generally had higher self-esteem. The researchers found that “intrinsic religiousness, spiritual maturity, and self-transcendence were significantly predictive of better mental health and positive functioning.” (Sanders) Extrinsic spirituality, however, was shown to increase feelings of prejudice towards people and actions. (Content Pages) While both of these types are considered to be separate from each other, most people still have a mixture of intrinsic and extrinsic spirituality. Those that wish to further understand themselves should analyze their spirituality to see whether their spirituality is more intrinsic or
