The claim charges that UPS bamboozled the New York state and city in tax income by distributing approximately 80,000 illegal untaxed cigarettes. Lawsuits not only significantly increase expenses, but also deflect the company’s goal of acquiring large-scale business opportunities. A company’s reputation is very sacred and legal issues will increase expenses and negatively affect the company’s productivity and profitability.
Reduction in the International Package Division
Another weakness that the United Postal Service struggles with is a reduction in its International package division, which could significantly impact the annual revenue of the company. The division earned revenue of US$12.1 million in 2015, however, earned 6.5% more in fiscal year 2014 with revenue of US$12.9 million. The International Package division earns approximately 30% of the company’s revenue, making it the second highest revenue generator division (UPS, 2016). This division main focus is to transport and deliver small packages and may be the root cause of the reduction in the International packages revenue.
