In this assignment, I will be analysing the benefits of understanding diversity in health and social care as well as understanding what will happen if a worker does not understand diversity.

Understanding diversity is important for workers as if they can understand diversity, they will be able to treat the service users equally, fairly and be more accepting of them. Furthermore, the workers will not be discriminative towards the service users. For example, if a girl from a practicing muslim family was at a hospital, if the workers understood diversity then they would be able to respect the fact that the girl may prefer to have a female doctor rather than a male doctor. This would therefore show that the girl’s beliefs and requests are accepted and valued and this will help her to feel included and welcomed for who she is, no matter her beliefs. In addition to this, the girl will feel a sense of belonging. Furthermore, workers should understand diversity so that they are able to communicate and co-operate effectively with their workers. If workers have an understanding of diversity, they will be able to show respect towards the service users as well as their work colleagues and this will therefore help them to look professional in front of the service user and this will help the service user to feel comfortable and secure.

If a worker understands diversity, they will be able to show care effectively to the service user and will be able to understand how individuals are different. This will therefore help them to accept those individuals who are different to everyone else and by the worker understanding diversity, they will be able to treat the service users like they would want to be treated. Furthermore, if a worker understands diversity, they are less likely to exclude the service users and this therefore means that they will not be causing offence to the service users or making them feel less welcome.
