INTRODUCTION
Actions are more expressive than words. We always emphasize on how people act and we always judge the right from wrong from the actions done. There is a philosophical reason behind this. The philosophy is that morals are determined by actions is called normative ethics.
If we look at the justice system of the society, we can see this pretty clearly that actions are being judged, not the intentions. Normative ethics agree to the fact that the morality is based on actions. But there are different ways of viewing it. Such as Consequentialism, this says that morality of an action should be judged by its consequences. And those moral actions are categorized as those that produce a positive outcome and immoral are those which produce

We might be evaluating character traits instead of actions, or we might be evaluating actions in terms of the consequences. Consequentialist theories of moral evaluation have two parts. One part is an account of what is good, and the other part suggests that how this good should be approached, which underlies the property such of being right. For e.g. A very well-known example of consequentialism is Utilitarianism, which holds that the right action is the action that maximizes pleasure, the action that has the overall best consequence in terms of production of pleasure. Suppose that a doctor, Claire, has only a specific dose of medicine, that is only enough to save a life of only one person, James.
In order to save James, she would need to use the whole doze of medicine. However, there are five other people who need much smaller dozes/portions of medicine than James, in order to be saved. Claire could instead divide the medicine into five smaller dozes and save them instead of James.
Now a utilitarian would perceive the right action as the action with the best possible consequence and so Claire should use the medicine to save five rather than just

On that evening, the nurse had 7 total care patients, and had to administer quite many medicines and provide care. In that particular evening, another nurses’ patients fell and she had to attend to her partner nurse’s patient.
After ensuring all patients were uninjured patient, giving medications and completing all assessments, she didn’t have any time left for giving evening care. And so, two patients had to go to bed without being washed. The nurse was also unable to do hourly safety checks on her patients. And, she also had to stay after hours to complete the report on two incidents. This experience affected the nurse and she felt guilty that she wasn’t able to provide care to these patients. This incident occurred three years ago and she still has not accepted another shift on that floor. This heavy workload has occurred because of the cost associated with hiring more nurses, or care aids, etc. to minimize work load. Another issue might be staffing issue on this
A nurse attending stated “during the morning’s second surgery, he actually dozed off. The nurse took him aside and recommended that he take a break, but he refused and returned to the operation.” The nurse here was in fault in more ways than one. This nurse should never allowed the doctor return back to operate on the patient, he should have been removed from the operating room immediately. The nurse should have
Providing the best care to each patient starts with providing the proper amount of staff members to each unit. Looking at the needs of different units not only allows administration to see areas for improvement, but also areas that are being handled correctly. Utilizing the indicators provided by The Joint Commission, 4 East, a pediatric medical/surgical floor, has a high rate of falls and nosocomial pressure ulcers that appears to be related to the increase overtime nurses have been working for that floor (Nightingale, 2010). Research has shown increases in adverse events have been related to nurses working over 40 hours a week (Bae, 2012).
Jerry has been trained as a medical assistant and well as LPN or licensed practical nurse. Having an occupation as being a medical assistant is regulated loosely in the U.S. In addition, many states lack medical assistant certification and training requirements. It may be surprising that licensing for medical assistants does not exist. Despite inconsistent regulation, every state mandates by law that whenever a medical assistant provides any type of direct patient care, the supervising physician or licensed health care professional must be physically present in the office or building (medicalassistant.net website, 2012). Another law that is consistent in every state is one that prohibits medical assistants from independently prescribing or refilling medications (medicalassistant.net website, 2012). Licensed Practical Nurses have a broader scope of practice than medical assistants do, but prescribing or refilling medications is not included. In this case study, only Dr. Williams is able to refill the medication. If Jerry decides to call in a refill he will be practicing outside of his professional scope and breaking state law.
Giving myself time to read up on nursing experiences, attending more clinical practice labs, participating and watching these duties in the health care setting will allow me to develop a secure level of confidence the next time that this type of situation may occur. Staying in the room allowed me to experience the feeling of support while looking past social norms and how they are challenged. I met my personal values, and I believe that one should respect another person`s privacy. This understanding allowed me to be there to support the resident during her time of need. In the article `starting out` by Jane Schulz, a nursing student shares her experience of helping her colleague assist an elderly patient with daily care. Observing the compassion and care between nurse and patient from fundamental tasks, she took away a valued lesson of how our support and caring methods affect an individual. My relation to this story allowed me to reflect on the effects my care and supporting actions had on our patient.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in Habersham County, Tom was feeling slightly nervous as he exited the staff lounge and entered the hustle and bustle of County Hospital’s ER to begin his first shift as an RN. The first few hours of his shift passed slowly as Tom mostly checked vital signs and listened to patients complain about various aches, pains, coughs, and sniffles. He realized that the attending physician, Dr. Greene, who was rather “old school” in general about how he interacted with nursing staff, wanted to start him out slowly. Tom knew, though, that the paramedics could bring in a trauma patient at any time.
It is the nurse’s responsibility to advocate for the patient and protect their safety, health and rights. If a nurse is fatigued, this can jeopardize the patient’s safety as well as the nurses. In this article it
With budget cuts in recent years the nursing staff ratios are taking a hard hit. As a result, patients are having to remain in the hospital longer with an increase in Hospital Acquired Infections and other adverse events. These include falls, (CAUTI) catheter-associated urinary tract infections, (CLABSI) central-line
Consequentialist: Focuses on the result of an action. The act is considered a good act if the result is good, likewise and act is considered bad if the result produced is bad. Under the consequentialist theory, we have Egoism and Utilitarianism.
* The action must be appropriate (b): I also have to give the patient the right medicine for their symptoms. If I give the patient a fatal dose of pain-killing drugs, it is no use saying that my intention was to relieve their symptoms of pain if the patient was not suffering from pain but from breathlessness.
Morals are sometimes known to be a tricky thing. Most everyone around the world has morals, but they all have a different meaning. In a standard definition, morals are “standards of behavior; principles of right and wrong” (Moral). People judge how they should act or respond to things based upon their morals. In addition, people rely on other standards to apply as well as their own.
I will attempt to decipher through philosophical theories and see how different philosophers would act in such a situation. In Jonathan Bennett’s book entitled ‘The Act Itself’ which observes how we process moral thoughts and how personal moral judgments and how a deeper understanding of our rational or irrational moral process will allow us to have greater control of our thoughts and lives. He opens his book by analysing a ‘conceptual grid underlying our morality of conduct’ and ‘fields of behaviour’ seen as the
From the reading, I understand that people think and act differently when faced with ethical issues. For one to make a rational decision, an extensive process of judgment is required (Bandura, Caprara, & Zsolnai, 2000). For an individual to be responsible, he or she should put into consideration the magnitude of the consequences of the actions, social
Consequentialism: is it right or wrong you decide. There are many different types of Consequentialism but I am just going to list four ofthem. Each of the different types of Consequentialism theories are each defined differently andhave many differences between them.Utilitarianism: So Utilitarianism say that you should maximize the most good for thelargest number. They used to call Utilitarianism “Utility” which is where the name came from.Google defines Utility as being defined as economic well-being, a lack of suffering, as well aspressure.(Hedonism: The term "hedonism," from the Greek word ἡδονή (hēdonē)http://www.iep.utm.edu/hedonism/ ) Google defines Hedonism as “The pursuit of pleasure;sensual self-indulgence.”In other words Hedonism means that how things affect us and cause usto behave or act a certain way is good for us.It also says that the pain and pleasure of life are theonly things that matter.
Staffing deficits pose a direct threat of manifesting negative outcomes associated with the delivery of patient care. Anything or anyone that compromises patient care should be eradicated immediately. This author believes that staffing deficits remain a consistent issue due to lack of solutions that actively address the issue. This author believes that inadequate staffing is a major concern due to the degree of harm it can impose on patients. Adverse events associated with
Arguably, while the human conscience does play some role in deciding if an act is moral or not, a conscience alone cannot determine what acts are right and wrong. Rather, the consequences of the action in addition to the conscience determines the morality of an action. Consequentialism
