What Is The Courageous?

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~ Winston Churchill. This quote defines what it is to be courageous, to be courageous is to persevere even if you know you will fail. This kind of courage is the courage which both Harold Crick in Stranger Than Fiction and Jean Louise “Scout” Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. In Stranger Than Fiction, an IRS agent, Harold Crick, with a monotonous life learns that you must not only survive, but you must truly live. This lesson is taught through a series of events that lead to his breaking out of his shell and truly living his life. The events are preliminarily put into action through Harold hearing the voice of the author of a book about his life. In To Kill A Mockingbird, a tomboyish six-year-old, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, discovers the true meaning of camaraderie and bravery. Her friendships are strong but her definition of courage is flawed. In the end, she realizes a great truth, that to really know someone, you have to imagine yourself in their shoes. Courage is important to these two characters, as they both discover what it really means to be brave and what the true definition of courage is. Courage is not always outspoken, sometimes courage is knowing that you will fail, but trying and failing anyway and then accepting your failure.

The novel Parvana written by Deborah Ellis is about a young Afghanistan girl who has to pretend to be a boy in a war torn town called Kabul. Parvana is a very courageous girl because she does everything for family, such as going to into town to help her father him with his work, knowing that there are no girls allowed outside of their houses. Parvana is also very brave because she wants to earn more money for her family, so her and a friend Shauzia decide to go and dig up bones to earn more money. That’s not the only time Parana was being courageous, because Parvana had to go with her mother to go and get her father from the jail and bring him home.

Throughout history, there have been countless times whenre individuals have courageously fought for change and societal justice. For instance, Gandhi helped India gain their independence, even though the circumstances were extremely risky for him, and could have led to his arrest or even death. However, he continued to persevere through it all, and was able to accomplish great things for his country. Another example is Malala Yousafzai, who promoted the education of girls in her country. Despite the clear threat of the Taliban, she continued to fight hard for her cause. Courage can be defined in many different ways, such as the ability to persevere and accomplish something in a frightening or risky situation. Examples of courage can be seen all around the world. Without courageous people, society would not have been able to improve. Being courageous is difficult, and requires an abundance of dedication and perseverance. It also includes remaining strong, despite the challenges that may occur along the way.

Throughout the history of the humanity, there were many events happened that show of the courage of many people. After the story “ Unbroken” that tells us about Louis Zamperini and his story , we can see that he is an example of a courage person, beside that, Nelson Mandela is another examples of this characteristic. Nelson was the democratic leader that fought for justice and freedom in South Africa, he spend over 20 years in prison for the apartheid regime. But with his courage and smartness, he won against the racism and became the leader of the new South Africa. And In 1993, he received a Nobel Peace Prize for all that he did and contributed for the humanity.

In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien expresses to the reader why the men went to the war and continued to fight it. In the first chapter, “The Things They Carried,” O’Brien states “It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather they were too frightened to be cowards.” The soldiers went to war not because they were courageous and ready to fight, but because they felt the need to go. They were afraid and coped with their lack of courage by telling stories (to themselves or aloud) and applied humor to the situations they encountered.

Ordinary courage is a book that tells the story of an ordinary man who is inlisted in the continental army in the revolutionary war. Joseph Plumb Martin is the young man fighting in this war, at the time he entered he was just a mere 16 year old kid but by the time his time in the continental army was up he became a man. This is a first person memoir of what it was like for a regular person living in a war zone, and dealing with the everyday fears of food shortage, low morale, and danger of attack. The Things They Carried, a fiction novel by Tim O’Brien, carries courage throughout the stories he tells by describing what it takes to be a soldier in Vietnam. Through burning the pictures and letters from a loved one, to seeing a friend’s remains in a tree, and carrying on despite witnessing a friend die, right before him, O’Brien allows the reader to witness the true courage needed to be a soldier. Being courageous is what holds these men together and makes every one of these stories string together and relate to one another. Much like soldiers, these stories build each other up and amplify their effects together. As students we are brainwashed by ancient myths such as The Iliad, where war is extolled and the valorous warrior praised. Yet, modern novels such as Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried (THINGS) challenge those very notions. Like The Iliad, THINGS is about war. It is about battles and soldiers, victory and survival, yet the message O'Brien gives us in THINGS runs almost contradictory to the traditional war story. There are many politically courageous acts that have happened over time, many of them which have shaped American today. ALthough, there is one in particular that really sticks out in my opinion, the bombing of Hiroshima. The man who was behind this goes by, Harry Truman. Initially, Truman was Franklin D. Roosevelt's vice president, but when F.D.R. dies in 1945, Truman took the role of the President of the United States (Frank 1). In his first few months as president, he made the gutsy decision of bombing Japan, which ended World War Two.

In Tim O’Brien’s powerful novel, The Things They Carried, the author undoubtedly emphasized the quintessential theme of ‘The Nature of Courage’ and how their differences affected the different members of O’Brien’s platoon. It is hard to have courage when one is faced with a dangerous situation, and often being courageous is not something you can teach it is just something inside that keeps you going when things get tough. The character Jimmy Cross, while he is seen as a minor character compared to others like Kiowa, Rat Kiley, Tim O’Brien himself, and Curt Lemon; Cross is actually a perfect depiction of the nature of courage due to the tunnel incident in the very beginning of the novel.

TIRPITZ spent most of the war in Norwegian waters threatening Allied convoys to Murmansk, as well as creating the potential to breakout into the Atlantic like her sister ship, BISMARCK. The British perception of the threat posed by TIRPITZ arguably exceeded its reality. But as a “fleet in being,” the German battleship required the Royal Navy to keep one modern dreadnought and one fleet carrier, plus consorts, in home waters during times when such vessels were sorely needed in the Mediterranean and later in the Far East.

This book is a story about two siblings that experienced many things throughout the whole book, most of them hard and new to them, but at the end, they assimilated to face these things. Their father, Atticus, was a lawyer who did everything at his hands to always do the right thing, and as a result of that, Jem and Scout met several circumstances that other kids weren’t exposed to and they learned to forgive and and appreciate others the way they are. Compassion and forgiveness are perceptible in this book and appreciable things like Camellias, and Red Geraniums can represent such strong emotions.

Courage is a necessity to overcome fears and achieve a desired goal. Fear is something that exists in all of us. There is no hero or any particular courageous figure that is without fear. Being fearless is not required to be courageous, one simply has to look past or overcome their fears to possess this great quality. When overcoming fears and going against the norm, there are always risks involved. There are different types of risks that come about. Someone could risk life or limb, while others risk their reputation. Either risk is serious enough that a person must have courage to endure that particular risk.
