“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” stars Nia Vardalos as Toula Portokalos, a 30-year-old daughter in a Greek family living in a city. The movie opens with Toula’s father, Gus Portokalos (Michael Constantine), picking her up in a rain storm and telling her she needs to get married because she is getting old. Toula then recounts her childhood, telling of the difficulties involved with growing up in a Greek family. Toula’s life has been less than stellar to this point, but that all changes when Ian Miller (John Corbett), a teacher at a local school, walks into her parent’s restaurant. In My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I analyzed the scene where Toula’s family is having a party, and Ian Miller’s parents are going to come and meet the family for the first time. This is an extreme clash of individualistic vs. collectivistic culture. Ian’s parents seemed to be a traditional white, American couple with no sense of foreign food, customs, or culture of any kind. When the parents originally start walking up to the house, and there have to be at least 30 people outside partying, it is an instant sense of confusion and intimidation that they seem to feel. In this day she was coming back to her land to stay, to rediscover herself. However, she got rejected by many women in the family. They consider her a traitor because she left. The younger women accept her because they are more open-minded.

Before referring to the impact of culture on families, I will say that culture is known as knowledge, art, beliefs, law, morals, customs and all habits and skills acquired by man not only in the family but also to be part of a society as a member that is. The family is defined as a group of people linked by blood, marriage, or adoption; usually centered on a married couple, their dependents, and relatives. Although there have also been non-traditional families made up of people who are not linked by blood or marriage and are now found more frequently in many regions of the world.

The film is well written, because the plot is simple, but when it shows in a film, it¡¦s a great movie to enjoy.

This Comedy tells the story of two families, one African American and the other Mexican-American, that are forced to combine when Lucia (Ferrera) and Marcus (Gross) announce their engagement. Lucia and Marcus have been secretly living together and having premarital sex unbenouced to Lucia’s family who are Mexican American. Lucia has dropped out of Columbia Law School and is planning to move away with Marcus to the country Lous so he can practice with Doctors without Borders once they are married . Lucia plans on introducing her fiance to her family and letting them in ontheir plans. She is allowed to attend college, which in turn, gives her new confidence and she is able to fall in love with a non-Greek man that is named, Ian. There are varieties of families in the world. People develop different personalities and mind sets because they have their own experience and knowledge gain from their individual families. In this essay, I will contrast and summarize each of nuclear, which is traditional, family and non-traditional families and also compare each of the families and examine how changing in non-traditional and nuclear families will affect people’s behaviors and minds in the view of sociologist and psychologist in order to argue how changing family affect individuals and the society.
