Normally when the word shark is heard a picture of only one comes to mind. The Great White Shark which is widely known, due to the portrayal of their aggressive behavior in the “Jaws” movie series. But in actuality, Mako Sharks are a more skilled predator. Although Mako Sharks and Great White Sharks are both similar, there are a plethora of differences in speed, diet, and size.
Mako Sharks are the second fastest out of all sea life in the ocean. Besides being trumped by the Sailfish the Mako is the fastest shark due to all the muscles in its body. The Mako Shark has evolved over many years. Due to its sleek body and powerful muscles, the Mako Shark is able to reach speeds of 60 mph. Nevertheless this speed the Mako still struggles at times to catch its prey.
The diet of sharks is typically similar in some cases, but surely not this one. As stated in (Preti’s) article, “Makos are thought to be opportunistic feeders that eat locally abundant prey.” Makos, unlike other sharks, feed on fish that aren’t so big such as mackerel, bonito, anchovy, and sardines. This diet is different from other sharks being that Makos go after smaller prey that is normally unattainable by other sharks.
The Mako Shark’s size doesn’t do it justice as it is one of the smallest sharks in the ocean. Makos grow to a typical size of around 260cm. The larger end of the growth spectrum is mostly females being they grow to lengths past 320cm and greater. (Doño, F) But thanks to their small size they are able
Sharks, the scariest, biggest, baddest creatures! That's what we make them out to be, but are they really? The answer is no, we say that. We kill more of them than they kill of us, about 900,094 more. Sharks, being carnivores, are NOT natural predators of humans.
Sharks are aquatic creatures and very important to the living with lots of information humans may not understand. To start off, femeles give birth to 7-9 sharks per litter that are 3-4 feet at birth. Next humans believe all sharks are monsters but out of 400 species only 4 sharks have been claimed to attack on humans. Lastly sharks attack for 2 main reasons one reason is for defense and predation. They attack in defense when humans are in or around their territory they attack in predation mistaking people for seals. In conclusion sharks are creatures that humans are still learning about and try to understand them better.
Sharks have been in our oceans for almost 450 million years. Those millions of years of evolution have allowed many different shark species to develop abilities, and to become perfect predators.
Orcas have the most diverse diet of all the marine mammals. Some specimens of orcas prefer different types of marine mammals or marine life. They will mostly eat fish and squid, but will devour almost any marine animal in site. They tend to eat a wide array of fish from salmon, hering, halibut, and cod. One Orcas was found to have a harbor seal, a stellar sea lion, and a harbor porpoise in its stomach. Another orca was found to have the remains of 32 adult harbor seals in its belly (Martin.) The orca has been observed to eat river otters, squid, and
Sharks are one of the oceans top predators. They vary in size from the extremely small dwarf shark, to the colossal whale shark. Sharks can be found all across the world’s oceans, from the tropic waters of Hawaii to the sub zero temperatures in the Artic oceans. Of the hundreds of sharks a select few species have actually been recorded in the Artic. Of these few, only three of them spend the majority of their time in these harsh, freezing waters. These sharks are the Greenland, Pacific Sleeper, and Salmon sharks.
Also hey are very unique and interesting. They can get up to 15ft long. Next blue sharks like to move around so they don’t stay in one spot for long. At last watching the movie jaws made people have many opinions that are oncel sharks. People find sharks very threatening but they are just like us.
Finally, The old man also saw a Mako shark during his journey which was the first shark he encountered after catching the giant Marlin. “When the Old man saw him coming, he knew that this was a shark that had no fear at all and would do exactly what he wished.”The shark comes with celerity to eat the dead marlin, but ends up being killed by the Old Man. The shark is the only sea creature the old man knows that is not apprehensive. The shark does anything he wants without looking at the consequences even if it means death. The shark has a never giving up attitude. The shark is like a thief that tried to steal the Old Man’s marlin without looking at the risks.
The Discovery Channel has taught us that Great White Sharks are the largest predatory fish in the sea, and can eat something as big as a sea lion WHOLE. The biggest one was caught in 1993 off Prince Edward Island and was 20
They can swim at thirty five miles per hour(Institution, Smithsonian). They also have seven rows of teeth(Institution, Smithsonian). They have a total of three hundred triangular serrated teeth(Bradford). When Great white sharks are in the womb they supposedly swallow their own teeth. The first time they sink their teeth in their prey, it is called a sample bite. Sharks normally go up to their prey and taste them to make sure the want to eat them(Bradford). That's why most attacks are not fatal, because the shark tastes the human and thinks yuck that is not what I want to eat and spits them back out. They don't normally mistake humans for food considering only five to ten happen every year(Bradford). Once they sense food they need to get to it fast. They can swim up to fifteen miles per hour(1). Great Whites have to be fast at Cape Cod because they can not sneak attack the
The Mako shark is a very unique species of cartilaginous fish in the Lamnidae family (Col-Spector, Audrey, “MAKO SHARK- Enchanted Learning Software"). This pelagic swimmer is the fastest shark that has ever been observed in the ocean, clocking in at speeds up to 60 mph (Col-Spector). Its streamlined body allows it to swim at faster speeds than most other fish, making it a highly successful predator. “Schooling fish, including tuna, herring, mackerel, swordfish, and porpoise” are popular among the diet of the Makos (Col-Spector). Although they like to prey specifically on schooling fish, Makos eat just about anything they come across (Col-Spector). The Mako sharks physical features and social characteristics is what sets it apart from other species of the deep.
For 350 million years, sharks have swum the earth and sought out their prey. Before the dinosaurs every set foot on earthen shores, sharks lurked in the murky depths of the ocean. On the North Shore Shark Adventures tour, you will be introduced to the Sandbar and Galapagos sharks. If you are really lucky, a Tiger shark may make an appearance.
The black tip shark the biggest black tip shark is around 8.4 feet the average size is 4.9 feet and at birth is 15-28 inches most black tip sharks stay in shallow clear water they are mostly near humans swimming sites
There are many different species of hammerhead sharks, the largest of which is the Great Hammerhead, or Sphyrna Mokarran. The great hammerhead, though endangered, is found all over the world’s oceans, has many distinct physical features, and has a very diverse diet. The great hammerhead also gives live birth and is considered potentially dangerous to humans, but is still regularly fished for many reasons.
Sharks have a long history, they can be dated back to over 400 million years ago, one of very few species that live for such a long period without distinction. Within over 400 different species, the smallest shark is only 17 cm in length which is the dwarf shark; while the largest
Their bodies are also shaped somewhat like a torpedo to give them a more streamlined affect in the in water. Yet, some types of sharks, the ocean dwellers have a flat body similar to that of skates and rays. Sharks can travel with great bursts of speed especially when attacking their prey or when excited. The fastest-swimming sharks have a moon-shaped tail that provides extra power and durability for swimming.
