From reading the poem “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke a person could take away one of two different meanings behind the poem. The two meanings that one could take are as such, it is either a fond outlook on a father coming home drunk after work and playing with his child, or it is a dark outlook of a drunk father coming home and beating his child. While how one interprets it is based on their personal schema during the first time reading the poem, it could be argued that upon further examination of the poem it is obviously the fond outlook of a friendly father. This is a positive meaning because most people enjoy the feeling of being drunk as it numbs them to the negativity in the world. Within the second stanza is also a use of imagery that again has a two possible meanings depending on one’s personal schema. The imagery used in stanza is making the mental picture of a feeling. While those with more negative life experiences or outlooks may interpret “My mother’s countenance, Could not unfrown itself” with a negative meaning that the mother could not get the frown off of her face unless the beating stopped. On the other hand those with more positive outlooks may experience this line as a mother wanting to be upset with the father for being so rambunctious with the child, but cannot maintain the frown because of the overall silliness and joy experienced by both parties involved. Thus the mother could not remove the frown herself through thinking about it, but could have it removed by watching the father and child. Finally one of the most arguable points that the poem is about an actual dance is in how the poem uses structure. The poem uses structure by having each stanza have four lines as well as an ABAB rhyme scheme both of which are common in songs, especially those which are danced too.
