The most effective sociological perspective is seen to be the functionalist perspective. This is because it explains that education serves different functions in the society like socialization, social integration, social and cultural innovation and also social placement. Whereas the conflict theory states that education is meant as a way of promoting social inequality by differing in the funding and learning conditions in the various schools plus the impact of hidden curriculum. On the other hand the symbolic interactionalist perspective state that education tends to affect the gender roles and also the interaction between a teacher and a student affects how they learn due to some set expectations by teachers (Barkan 2012).
The following functions
I will be applying the three major sociological perspectives, which include functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism to the experiences of Hispanic Americans. No ethnic group attracts more public attention than the Hispanic people do due to their large numbers, their residential clustering, and bilingual programs and signs associated with them making them a recognizable ethnic group. Hispanic people who live in poverty or the small number involved in gangs, drugs, or other criminal activity get more attention and generate negative stereotypes, but most of them live as members of the middle class.
Structural functionalism is a macro analysis view defined as “The way each part of society functions together to contribute to the whole.” In education, it focuses on how it serves the needs of society. Functionalists view education as a way to pass on knowledge and skills. While functionalists believe that schools sort students based upon their academic knowledge, Conflict theorists believe that students are sorted based on their social/financial class. Conflict theory is “The way inequalities contribute to social differences and perpetual differences in power.” Conflict theorists believe that students of lower status won’t have the same opportunities in school as students of a higher class. A student of a family with a
There are three main theoretical perspectives in sociology: symbolic interactionism, functional analysis, and conflict theory. These theories serve as an approach to the formulation and solution of social problems. Each theoretical perspective defines specific touch to the study, interpretation, and evaluation of social objects. Despite the fact that these theories use different approaches to research, all of them can be applied together to any aspects of a social life to better understand the nature of human relationships and to give a bigger picture of studying subject.
Growing up, my life was somewhat sheltered compared to the lives of other people my age. I was raised by both my mom and dad in a Christian household, in which I was taught morals based upon our faith. As a result of this upbringing, my parents and I made the decision to enroll me in a private Christian school in sixth grade. In this setting I was protected from the influences of the outside world. All of the language, violence, and temptations were around me, which I began to recognize as I entered my freshman year of high school. Even the walls of the highly respected establishment could not keep the real world out.
In today’s tumultuous world, a person can benefit from different ways to make sense of all the things that happen around them to add perspective and reason. One of these ways is to use a sociological perspective to achieve a greater understanding of both cause and effect. The three major sociological perspectives include: the functionalist perspective, the conflict perspective, and the symbolic interactionist perspective. In response to the news article NYC Police Officers Turn Their Backs on Mayor, each of the sociological perspectives will be discussed in relationship to the civil unrest between the New York City police department and mayor’s office in the shooting deaths of two officers during protests.
In order to understand have theory of Sociological perspectives you must first define the three major philosophies. The first sociological perspective will be the symbolic interactionist perspective which focus on the everyday details of life. They look at how people interpret different signs and symbolic images that have a specific meaning to the originator but sometimes loses meaning to the receiver. Since words are not concrete and can sometime be manipulated to another person to justify why they thought this was the correct interpretation. The second sociological perspective I would like to address is the Functionalist perceptive which focus on how we are held together by adapting to social consensus. The majority
Sociological perspectives is the study of human life and social interactions; the way humans interact in group settings or in society as a whole. In sociology there are three primary sociological theories or approaches known as conflict, functionalist, and symbolic interactionist. Each theory has its own perspectives based upon how humans view society, social change, social order or individual views. The symbolic interactionist perspective is the sociological approach that generalizes about everyday forms of social interactions in order to explain society as a whole (Witt, J. 2015, pp 17). Symbolic interactionist is what we will use to find out how it affects family, marriage, education and religion within our lives daily.
Sociologists use one or more theoretical perspective approaches to make different assumptions about society three of the most common theoretical perspectives is the conflict, functionalist, and interactionist. Each one of these three major sociological perspectives have similarities and differences among each other.
The conflict perspective discusses how the structural functionalization for the education of the students is deeply flawed. The structural- functionalist perspective shows how the student can be successful with obedience. It includes instruction, socialization, sorting individuals into statuses and custodial care. Conflict theorist see the social- functionalization is the indoctrination into the capitalist ideology. Leading to Cultural Imperialism, which ignores the history of the minorities and teaches their own. Segregating minorities who are located in high- poverty schools. Because of the segregation it causes students to eventually drop out. High-poverty high schools have less resources in order for the students to gain success thus not
There are three specific ways to view the world from a sociological perspective. The first is symbolic interactionism, which emphasizes the social aspect of society. People develop symbolic meanings through social interactions. This theory analyzes the way society functions by looking at the meanings people place on objects, whether they are physical, social, or abstract. Another perspective is structural functionalism, which states that society is made up of interrelated parts that work together, and is structured to do the greatest good for the benefit of the most people. This theory views society as a complex system that works together to form solidarity and stability. Lastly, there is the conflict theory, which says that society is composed of groups that are involved in a constant power struggle, and even if outwardly it seems there is cooperation, there is always underlying conflict. There is an emphasis in using
Here in the United States education is modeled after our capitalist society which means education holds the interest of industrialization and its image. For example we separate stints into subjects for specific job or career. Through sociology's functionalism and conflict theory and symbolic interactionism people can see how the United States education system functions.
Personally, I learned the messages about how other groups of people should be categorized from my external surroundings of family, friends, peers, and other people around me. Throughout the years, my family would always tell and teach me their thoughts and beliefs of other groups of people. My friends and peers from school would also tell me their thoughts as well. From all the external influences in my life, I have gathered a lot of information on how to “judge” and “categorize” other people. Although I was taught by others to believe a certain way, I believe that my own ways of judgment and prejudice still come from within myself and I do not like to let others make the decision for me.
Looking through popular magazines has long been a source of reading entertainment for many people. Throughout the years magazines slowly but surely also began influencing their reader’s lives. Readers of all ages, nationally and gender were now looking though magazines for answer on life, fashion, love and even sex. Advertising companies soon began to notice the phenomenon that was happening and began incorporating their ads into magazines. Today, magazines are full of ads. The scary part of all this is that advertising companies are willing to corrupt your mind to convince you to buy their product. The level of influence is unmeasurable since it can come in many forms. Because of this, I’ve
The relation between the study of how people act towards each other and education is a subject of debate. One idea says education is meant to overcome where two things are not the same. Whereas other says the most important function of education is helping to increase balance status of good people in the world and to maintain inequality whatever state it comes in. I will focus on three areas that affects the educations of Socialogy. The first area is Structural Functionalism.
Functionalist one of the “theories” of sociology are mainly concerned with the function of education to society and to seek solution to the following questions, “what is the relevance of education to the social system and “what are the relationship between education and economic system”.
