“Clocks” by Coldplay addresses the topic of purpose. The song begins as the main character is pleading for help when he has been knocked down on his knees. He talks about every word gone unsaid in his life and every missed opportunity. Then he explains his thoughts on the world, feeling like everyone is just waiting for him to take action. In the end, he realizes his sense of purpose in life and uses this uncertainty to his advantage. “Clocks” carries a theme that although purpose may be hard to figure out with pressure and uncertainty, life’s purpose will always come in the end. In the first verse, the song says, “A tiger’s waiting to be tamed singing” (Coldplay 8). Coldplay is referring to the urgency of the situation. He feels the world
Most of the time, when we listen to a song, we don’t listen to the words, or what message they are trying to give us. Each song out there has a message in the lyrics somewhere. For this assignment, we were to analyze a song and the lyrics and find the thesis of that song. With thesis, I mean what the message within the song is trying to tell us. The song “I hope you dance” by Lee Ann Womack has a good thesis in some ways, but the thesis could also be argumentative also.
One of which is the sound of ticking clocks representing time. The other lyrics representing the ways to use your time in life. The clock ticking repetition begins after the introduction of his speech, he tells his audience how he rembers at graduation two clocks ticking in his head one really fast, and one slower representing his time left in college and his time left in life. He uses the repetition of these clocks when telling stories about the times that he hears the slower clock ticking” The Twin Towers have fallen, it’s not even 10 in the morning… The big clock, the real clock, booms louder than the tiny, whirring one that marks your Wesleyan time. It’s impossible to drown it out, because it’s actually the sound of your own heart pounding in your ears.”(Miranda). He also tells about hearing the smaller clock, and his parents giving him an education “I am keenly aware of their sacrifice and the tiny clock gets louder. Tick tick tick tick tick tick.”(Miranda) He also uses lyrics “I’m not throwing away my shot” and “wait for it, wait for it wait” repeatedly to show life isn’t all about waiting or rushing, sometimes you use both in your life. Miranda told stories and matched them with the repeated lyrics. He has examples of not throwing away your shot, ” I do not study abroad my junior year. I have too many plays I have agreed to work on! I am not throwing away my shot” He also tells about waiting on things is
Meaning in one way or another colors every mental state, because it is the foundation of every conscious level. We don’t always focus specifically on the sense of import in every experience, but it is precisely this sense of meaning, whether conscious or unconscious, that turns each and every experience into a conscious experience in the first place. Thus, no conscious experience is a completely meaningless experience, because without some level of meaning the event cannot be experienced as “conscious” at all. Numerous metaphors can be used, the fact that meaning may be thought of as the seed from which each and every conscious experience grows, or meaning is the spark that ignites the flame of consciousness. It is these metaphors that fulfill the theory that life without purpose is not life at all.
Imagine not having any purpose, or at least so far as you can see. This would be quite depressing, since everyone wants a purpose and a reason to go through trials. This theory is illustrated in the book, “The Alloy of Law”, by Brandon Sanderson. Sanderson uses third person point of view and diction to reveal how self-discovery brings happiness.
For example, “In your bare feet In mid-January” most people when they think mid-January they think snow and having to wear many layers of clothing because it is really cold, but the singers purpose of juxtaposing January and bare feet is to tempt the audience with a promise of a relaxing, warm, and amazing alternative. In other words why be cold and miserable when you can be warm and happy, with your toes in the sand even in the winter. This is a metaphor for why live a stressful life when you have options to change it. Another example is, “Swimming in the mystery” which might refer to the Pacific Ocean that is a vast body of ocean. The singer’s purpose is to tell his audience that they have to have to take a leap of fate even though it can be scary, like the vast ocean. Changing your life for the better should always be a choice you should chose because it is for your own benefit. In the music video it shows a portrait of Jesus Christ, who was resurrected, and a body of water, where Jesus Christ was baptized, this can be symbolic for rebirth, something that the singer probably wants. The audience knows this because of the conveniently placed objects throughout the
Listening to the lyrics of your favorite song you automatically start to have a connection with that song. Then the song starts to represent you and your life because of the lyrics. Some songs show about being a fighter, having freedom, or just being you. There's a billion of songs out there and there's a billion of people who connect with those songs. Usually the most common reason why some songs represent people is by their past experience. For me some songs represent me because I decided to follow my dreams, living in the moment, and get right back up.
In a story based around a dystopian society where everyone is happy, it becomes difficult to separate the good from the bad. The characters making light of serious catastrophes, such as an earthquake, makes it even harder for me, as the reader, to follow. Thankfully, the substance known as soma is a hole in this impenetrable defense and metaphorically opens Pandora’s Box in regards to all the issues plaguing this society. For me, this one substance symbolises all that is wrong in this “perfect” society and really ties the plot together. The constant use of phrases such as, “‘Remember one cubic centimetre cures ten gloomy sentiments.’”
In order to be happy, people must have a purpose in life. This theme is demonstrated through both symbolism and mood in the passages “Andy Lovell” by T.S. Arthur and “The Song of the Old Mother” by William Butler Yeats. Through these literary devices, the authors show that by not following your passion, you will eventually become miserable. Because of their powerful words, the reader gets a firm grasp on the importance of objectives in life.
Music is a universal way in which people connect, and it does this through its use of literary devices to make the songs meaningful while still appealing. The song, “Wait and See,” uses literary devices like similes and metaphors to contribute to the theme of society’s mistakes and their impacts on the
Jem, Scout, and Dill were three kids raised in the Deep South in a small town known as Maycomb, Alabama in the early 1930’s. These kids grew up around racism and prejudice all their life. Atticus Finch, the father of Scout and Jem, raised the kids by himself with later help by Aunt Alexandra. During this part of the children’s lives, a positive, genuine, black man by the name of Tom Robinson was falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch was the defense attorney of this trial and did everything he could to free him. Most people today would view this way of living as ruthless and wrong, but in these times, it was just another day. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee painted a solid picture of the theme of loss of innocence through Dill, Scout, and Jem and their experiences in the story.
The song is related to the novel Life of Pi, because it represents Pi’s journey to survive on the lifeboat, while he makes compromises to stay determined and hopeful. It symbolizes his adventurous journey with a 450 pound tiger having limited food, water, and shelter. The producers of the song have included enthusiastic and passionate music, which is the perfect match for a novel like Life of Pi that keeps the readers excited and determined throughout story.
The road of life can be a bumpy one. There will always be twists and turns that can alter a person’s life, changing the course of their destination. Even though life can be tough, you have to draw upon your inner strength in order to persevere. The songs, “Move Along” by The All-American Rejects and “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” by Greenday sing about this message. The lyrics in their songs have many literary devices such as personification, repetition, symbolism and juxtaposition. The personification will help you
So why would the band choose to illustrate such a serious stage of personal development with the nursery rhyme-like style of the song's chorus? Before we get to that, the song's emotional and psychological message must first be examined.
1. Migrant and seasonal farm workers may have the poorest health of any aggregate in the United States and the least access to affordable healthcare (Nies, 2011). In Indiana, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides food assistance to low and no income people and families living in the United States (U.S.). It is a federal aid program administered by the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), however, distribution of benefits occurs at the state level. In Indiana, the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) is responsible for ensuring federal regulations are initially implemented and consistently applied in each county. People can apply for this assistance at their local Division of Family Resources. There are also many places that participate in the emergency food assistance program (TEFAP) and food pantries. In Lake County, Indiana, the largest food pantry is the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, which is a TEFAP participant and also a soup kitchen. They are open Monday through Friday during the day. There are also food pantries in trustee offices and churches, but some of them are by referral only. In some cases, the community health nurse can make a referral (in.gov, 2014).
An idea that interested me in the song “Fix you” by Coldplay was how you will always have someone to lean on no matter what. When Chris sings “lights will guide home” he is using personification in this line because saying the lights will guide them is a human thing to do, as people guide each other which I think Chris is trying to demonstrate when he sings the lyrics “lights will guide you home.” It shows life itself because no matter how big the mistakes you make, no matter how bad life may seem, there will always be someone that will have your back. This reminds me of my friends who are always there for me whether its for when I’m feeling down or if I’ve had a bad day. These lyrics also emphasize that everyone goes through rough patchs in their life and they should let people try to help them. When my dog died this year, I didn’t take it well and I was distraught, but it made me going through the loss easier
