Once Felix is a young, Jewish boy who is in an orphanage run by catholic nuns. He lived in in the orphanage for 3 years and 8 months as he waited for his parents to come and get him. He runs away from the orphanage to go out and find his parents, that is when he finds out the reality of his situation. For pretty much the whole book the the reader is told what Felix is thinking and doing at all times because the story is told through his eyes, the author was very explicit about this. In the beginning of the story Felix is kind of greedy. He finds a whole carrot in his soup, which was rare where he lived, and he took it out of his soup to hide from the other children so there wouldn't be a riot. One of the constant things with Felix throughout the story is his ability to tell stories from his story notebook as well as make up stories on the fly to calm the others down. From the time he is in the orphanage to the time he is on a train to a concentration camp, his ability to tell fascinating stories never leaves his side. As Felix ran away from the orphanage, he goes back to the town where he lived with his mom and dad before he got sent to the orphanage. There he stumbles upon a burning house. He finds that the owners have been shot, and he finds a little girl bleeding, but still alive. This part of the story is when Felix, as young as he is, has to grow up a little bit because he feels responsible for this little girl. As he hears Nazi trucks coming he carries
The Jewish family soon gets taken to the other side of the wall, a slum area, the ghetto. Misha still follows his pattern, goes back and forth between the wall and the outside world by just a very small hole on the wall, only he can go through. Uri slowly leaves Misha behind by doing his own whereabouts since Misha is doing fine on his own. Slowly questioning the main character, he only focuses on what he’s doing. After spending months with mostly the Jewish family, he starts to realize the reality around him. He didn’t fit in with the Milgrom's,. In fact, his story didn’t suited him. He leaves his fabricated life to start over. “My identity as a Gypsy vanished. Gone were the seven wagons, seven brothers, five sisters, Greta the speckled mare. Deep down I guess I had always known my Gypsy history was merely Uri’s story, not reality. I didn’t miss it.. When you own nothing, it’s easy to let things go.” pg.104) He slowly thought less and less about the orphans and more to the Milgrom’s. Later the tables get turned. Janina who is more of a sister than a best friend, follows Misha everywhere he goes. She copies him, sets him up for failure, and seems more “needy” than she first seemed to be. From how Misha treated Uri by wandering off, causing trouble, creating more responsibility, is now being inflicted back to him from Janina. From a new character change, Janina is now

His human was working on something small and had no real need of him for anything other than company. It was raining outside again so Felix was more than happy to hide himself away for the day and keep his human company. Things had been going well for them so far while they were in the field with Phillips. There was a small part of Felix that was still sad for the loss of Dr. Erskine, however, but there was nothing that he could do about that anymore. The assassin had done his job and Simon had been given back to the good doctor's wife.
Firstly, the book Once teaches students about historical events that take place during WWII. The force of the Nazis is demonstrated in the novel when they didn’t let anything interfere with their schedule and purpose. Felix, Chaya and Zelda risked their lives and jumped out of a Nazi controlled train that they had been squashed in for hours. This shows the desperate measures the living Jewish had to do to survive. Also, the children and adult starved on limited food supplies. This book gives high school students an excellent understanding of events that took place during the brutal WWII.
Him, the orphans and the workers all ran and left the orphanage to walk to another location to hopefully not get bombed. On the way, they found a car big enough for all of them to fit, but while getting on the Nazi’s had bombed the location. Solomon hid under the truck while the bombing was happening, but after it finished it drove off leaving him behind. He started to travel with the other Jewish villagers, but then was stopped by the Nazi’s where they would ask for their papers. When they weren't paying attention he hid his papers in his pants. He lied to the Nazi’s and said that the Jews took his papers so he had no way to show that he wasn't a Jew. He said his name was Josef Peters. They found out he spoke German and Russian so they said that he’ll be useful. So he stayed to be an interpreter.
In the novel ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman, Felix, the main character, goes through interesting changes throughout the book. Felix is naive but matures as the story continues. I admire his determination and hopefulness. I will explain some of his characteristics with evidence from the text. Felix is young jewish boy who had been put in an orphanage by his parents to protect him against the holocaust.
Mr. Fritz was a friend of the Frank’s family. The problem with this new person was that Ana needed to sleep in the main room with Mr. Fritz. She did not like this idea because he would rebuke so much Ana for all that she do. Ana begins to feel something for Peter (the Van Dan´s son).
The task of finding someone who would agree to take Victor was overwhelming: families in the occupied territories could hardly survive without an extra mouth, especially the Jewish mouth. Therefore, Victor spent next two years in the orphanage, and as every child there, he was dreaming of the day when his parents would come to take him home. Yet, life was going on even under the most horrific conditions: there were snowball fights in the winter; short, but memorable trips to the river during summers; an extra cube of sugar or an apple stolen from the kitchen. In two years, the orphanage became the only home he knew.
It was a terrifying transition going from the average life of a thirteen year old boy to that of a contained Jew. In school Miska Freudenberg had always been the popular student. His plethora of friends meant the world to him. So, when all of that was taken away Miska was devastated. In the camp there was no one to call his friend. That was until Shmuel came along. Shmuel was only eight years old, but the camp matured him greatly. Miska instantly grew attached to him; it was almost as if he had a little brother again. Miska stopped caring about himself and started obsessing over his only friend’s well-being. They had a spot they called their own by the gate of the camp. It had a beautiful view of the thick forest nearby. Everyday was the same
Felix is Jewish and has parents who run a bookshop. He was sent to a Catholic orphanage run by nuns because his parents couldn’t afford him. At the time of the story in 1942, he has been there for three years and eight months, believing that his parents would return for him when they had got over their financial problems. Felix escapes from the orphanage, running away from the Nazis under Hitler’s control. He meets a girl called Zelda, whose house had been burnt down and her parents killed. Felix takes her under his wing and journeys on in search for his parents.
It was Felix, but where was he going? Henry was curious, he wanted to know what Felix was up to.
The beginning of the story After takes place in 1945, the last year of World War Two, in a small town on the edge of the forest. The main character in the novel is a thirteen year old jewish boy named Felix. Felix has a tendency to worry about those closest to him and protect them from danger; he only has one person left to count on, Gabriek. His story began in 1942 when the Nazis invaded Poland and he, and his family, got caught in a terrible situation. Now, after three years, Felix lives in a hidden slot underneath a horse’s, named Dom, stall. Due to always being cramped into a very small area for long periods of time, Felix suffers from muscle atrophy in the legs. Felix seems to be a very caring boy and loves learning new things;
She finds them at the secret meeting place only Yuli and Felix knew about, the swamp. When she arrives, she arrives with Russian officers that may be able to help Felix find his parents. Felix of course agrees to go with the officers to find his parents. He says goodbye to Yuli and gets into the ambulance along-side multiple Russian officers. On their way to find his parents the officers stopped and shot up a town of innocent people without reasoning. After they left the town and arrived at their destination Felix ran out the doors and stopped in terror, there were piles of dead bodies everywhere, he was determined to find his parents so he raised his head high and walked through every tent there was and finally found what he was looking for, his mother. The theme of the novel is never give up. The theme is shown on page 172 as well as page 187. On page 172 Yuli and Felix have a conversation about going to Germany to find if his parents are still alive. Yuli said, “I’m sorry, Felix, I can’t take you to Germany, There’s something else I have to do. Something very important.” Felix replies with, “Alright, I’ll go on my own.” Additionally, on page 187 Felix is thinking to himself what
The story takes place in Münich, a city in Germany, during the adolescence of the Nazi regime. The majority of the city is extremely poor and cannot afford basic necessities such as food and water on a regular basis. The Nazis often march Jews through the city to the train station, which leads to the concentration camps, and comb through the houses in search of refugees. This horribly depressing environment often builds to the character of the men and women who live there, making them aggressive and afraid at the same time.
Johannes is suddenly forced to be the man of the house at the age of six because his father is in jail. His father in jail was just a constant reminder that Johannes lived in a place where there was unfair punishment for blacks.
