The Zika virus outbreak, the economic downturn, and the political turmoil have led to controversy about Brazil's ability to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. The Zika virus is spread through mosquitoes, and some parts of Brazil have tropical climates, leading to a lot of rainfall. This creates mosquito breeding grounds. When pregnant women are infected, it can cause microcephaly, which is a birth defect where the newborn has a small head. This creates many serious problems for the newborn. The problem has become dire and the world health organization has stated that pregnant women should not travel to Zika-infected areas (BBC, Rio Olympics Zika: The trouble with Aedes Aegypti). This causes fear about traveling to Brazil, which decreases the
One ongoing case that has evolved in the United States throughout the past couple of years is the Zika virus. The Chicago Tribune wrote “Commentary: To fight Zika, Deploy the National Guard” which was written on May 27, 2016 by ML Cavanaugh. According to http://www.mlcavanaugh.com, ML Cavanaugh is a United States Army strategist and has taught classes in the defense and strategic studies program. He was the youngest recipient of the “Order of Saint Gabriel the Archangel” according to mlcavanaugh.com.
Consequently, the spread of the Zika virus from its originating countries of Africa and Asia, to American countries has linked the virus as an ongoing epidemic. Due to climate changes, warmer winter temperatures, there is an increase of egg survival (Ali, 2017). Warmer spring, summer, and fall temperatures may also lengthen the season transmission of the virus in temperate regions as well. In addition, the spread of the flu- like virus in humans is is also due to natural disasters, such as, earthquakes and hurricanes destroying homes forcing residents to sleep outside exposing themselves to infected mosquitoes. International travelers are also at potential risk of contracting the virus, especially in industrialized countries. Furthermore, pregnant women or women of child bearing age should refrain from traveling to countries that are known for the Zika mosquito infestation.
In this project women of childbearing age was largely the population of focus, with many social determinants of the health that made this already vulnerable population even more in need of assistance concerning possible Zika outbreaks, prenatal education, and family planning services. Social determinants of health may include a variety of non-medical variables such as socioeconomic status, education attainment, neighborhood factors, racial discrimination, access to resources, working environment, etc. (Braveman, Egerter, & Williams, 2011; Mendez, Hogan, & Culhane, 2013). Women of childbearing age in relation to Zika virus exposure risk may encounter institutionalized racism and various upstream determinants of health that may negatively impact their ability to obtain healthcare coverage, educational resources, and family planning services. The political trends in Texas towards defunding Planned Parenthood and not expanding Medicaid services has placed an enormous burden on the women of Texas who wish to plan or prevent pregnancy but do not have the financial means to do so (Darney, et al., 2017). In the wake of a possible endemic disease, such as Zika virus, the most vulnerable will be the most susceptible.
In the united states , the government is divided into three different branches, although they are divided and they each have their own specific purpose; they all come together to make sure one main goal is provided and that is protection. The government is here to protect its people from things such as; laws that violates rights, harmful people, illnesses. And etc. in this case the government is in charge of protecting everyone from the illness Zika, which is a virus that is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. After viewing the assigned readings and viewing it proves that the government is fulfilling its role in protecting the people from the Zika virus.
Zika virus is a disease cause by the Aedes species. Not only is it affecting people in Brazil, it is also going to affect the people going to the Olympics this summer. But Zika might not be what they think it is… Because the Zika virus in Brazil is spreading so quickly, it is causing people to react to it drastically. Since some people think Zika is dangerous, they are more hesitant in making their choices.
“The agency predicted that the Zika risk in the city would drop significantly in August, which occurs during South America's winter – a period when fewer mosquitos are active.” (Dunlap) The political cartoon represents a man running away from the Zika Virus in Brazil, but Rio de Janeiro will be plenty safe for athletes to compete because of the weather and many other factors helping with the limiting of the Zika Virus. Upon research into the Zika Virus in Rio de Janeiro, there is not a reason athletes should not participate in the Olympics because of the Zika Virus. Reasearch has shown why it is safe to travel to Rio. Athletes could already be near the Zika Virus even when at home and not know it. Rio de Janeiro was not an area of large breakout; the large majority of Zika outbreak in Brazil was in the northeast part of Brazil. Athletes have not portrayed a strong enough reason to skip the Olympics, thus athletes should not miss the 2016 Olympics in Rio due to Zika.Works CitedDunlap, Tiare. "Everything You Need to Know About the Athletes Skipping the Rio . Olympics – and How Participants Are Addressing Zika
Typically, with a high tourist rates come with the risk of injuries or infection. The Zika virus was one that many was not sure how to control and keep the safety of everyone first. The Zika virus is spread through infected mosquitos, pregnant mothers which can cause defects on certain births. Zika virus is related to yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis and West Nile. With much of humanities safety as state the Olympic committee were up to a challenge. Despite the problem at the games, this virus has taken the lives of many and many are very vulnerable due to lack of knowledge and resources. India, Indoneisa and Nigeria are high risked countries as their resources are limited, “The research team, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Oxford University and the University of Toronto, Canada, said "vast numbers" of people were living in environments where it would be hard to prevent, detect and respond to the virus.” The Zika virus is taking over North and South America, and with the Olympic games being in Rio De Janiero the awareness there may help other countries who are at lost on what to do with the virus. More than eighty-two cases of measles happened in 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. Two visitors attending the games spread the virus at one or more venues. Finding early symptoms is very critical in
Brazilian health minister Ricardo Barros said that with a study of Cambridge University, only one out of five hundred thousand foreign tourists infected with Zika virus, so there is little risk. Is that the case? First Zika virus is found in Brazil in 2015, this virus will cause the baby to produce a huge birth defects, especially the small head disease, the Ministry of Health confirmed that 3047 cases of children were confirmed. Until 2016, the Zika virus did not occupy Rio de Janeiro, but Rio de Janeiro was the most affected city. The virus broke out more than 26,000 times. In the May 2016 report, the Zika virus case drastically reduced because the temperature was low. These official messages, for Lais Cristielle, are all lies, the number of viruses has not diminished, she is pregnant for six months, although she thinks she has not received the Zika virus, but she knows that up to a percent In eighty cases, the Zika virus was asymptomatic. She went to do the ultrasound every month, when the doctor told her that her baby did not develop or the head has not developed, she will become very scared. Cristielle lives in the Vidigal slums, where it has a number of boutique hotels and overlooks the white sandy beaches of Rio
There is a great shroud of controversy surrounding this summers olympics in Brazil, and for a great reason. The Zika virus, a disease that is common in places throughout Brazil, threatens many athletes and tourists. This mosquito born disease spreads itself to woman all across the country, and gives deadly affects to newborn children. So with this sort of problem, there should be the question held: can Brazil hold the Olympics this year? This is a common question surrounding many in the world, and WHO (World Health Organization) claims that "There is no need to move the Olympics from Rio de Janeiro, or to postpone or cancel them" (BBC, Zika Virus: Risk of Spread). With an uncontrolled disease at hand, many wonder the confidence of WHO and
Zika virus emerges in America and all over the world causing severe brain damage in newborn babies. Brazil is the most affected country. Specialists in Brazil and Dr. William Dobyns believe there is a definite link between brain birth defects and Zika infections in Brazil, even though it has not been yet established. Particularly, babies born with abnormally small heads and at least two standard deviations below the mean age and sex, have the condition called microcephaly. Most of the time, microcephaly is linked with factors like chromosomal abnormalities, malnutrition, and exposure to drugs during pregnancy. In the case of Brazil, Dr. Dobyns considers the outbreak of Zika to cause the worst case of the brain damage. As the result, Brazil’s
Well before the Zika pandemic started in Brazil a year ago, Olympics coordinators knew they would confront a test in keeping the roughly 16,000 competitors and 600,000 guests to Rio de Janiero healthy.Olympic coordinators and Brazil officials realize that up to half of all voyagers participate in casual sex, which can likewise transmit Zika in the event that they don't utilize condoms. Athletes and visitors can likewise spread Zika to sexual accomplices back home, or to local mosquitoes who will transmit it locally.Brazil is propelling a titanic push to treat Rio for mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus. People have approached Brazil and the Global Olympic Board of Trustees to cancel the current year's games. The U.S. Olympic advisory group obviously
Infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. A pregnant woman can pass Zika virus to her fetus. CDC recommends special precautions for women who are pregnant; according to the CDC, they should not travel to any area of Brazil below 6,500
Zika virus (ZIKV), a Flaviviridae family member is an arbovirus transmitted to humans by mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti. ZIKV epidemic over the past few years has implicated a rapid incline in neonatal microcephaly and Guillain Barre syndrome has become an immense global health issue. Like other Flavivirus, ZIKV has an enveloped, single positive sense RNA genome. The ZIKV glycosylated non- structural protein-1 (NS1) is known to be the main conserved feature among flavivirus, which interferes with host molecules and is vital in viral replication as well host immune modulation and pathogenesis. However, compared to typical flaviviruses such as dengue virus (DENV) and West Nile virus ,ZIKV NS1 demonstrates independent coding sequence
Countries in Latin America need to minimize the extremely firm restrictions or create a certain set of laws on abortion procedures and be more lenient on the use of birth control due to the increased number of cases of pregnant women infected with the Zika virus. The laws on abortions in Brazil, as well as other Latin American countries, are too strict for Zika infected pregnant women to obtain the procedure. The views on birth control in Latin America and Brazil are too harsh and should be lifted for women to prevent pregnancies that will be affected by the Zika virus.
The zika virus was discovered in 1947 but the first actual human case was detected in 1952. Since that case was detected there have been outbreaks from tropical Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands reported. Before 2007 at least 14 cases have been documented and zika outbreaks could have probably occurred in many different locations which could have been failed to be reported. This is because the symptoms are like other diseases. Zika is transmitted mostly through a mosquito bite, it can be transmitted to a fetus from a pregnant woman, through sexual intercourse, and it hasn’t been confirmed yet but it is very likely that it can be transmitted through a blood transfusion. Zika does not have a vaccine to prevent it, but since it is transmitted mostly through a mosquito bite the best way to prevent it would be to make sure you and your family members are protected from mosquito bites. Wearing long sleeves and long pants sprayed with insect repellent could help, make sure that the insect repellent contains at least one of the following ingredients DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-methane-diol, or 2-undecanone and make
