In todays world, there are many leaders. Some of them are good leaders, while some of them probably should not be leading. But what makes a good leader? What qualities make one leadership style more effective than that of another. Leadership is less about your needs and more about the needs of the people and the organization. Leadership styles should be adapted to the demands of the situation, the requirements of the people involved, and the challenges facing the organization involved. The main six styles focused on here are coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pace setting, and coaching. Coercive Coercive leadership style is one that is sometimes not thought of as an effective style because it demands immediate compliance. Caution should be used when deciding to incorporate this style. There are few situations that demand this leadership style such as during a turnaround or a takeover is imminent. In such cases, this style can break bad habits and shock people into new ways of working. Authoritative The authoritative style is most like a visionary. They “see” the light and will lead the company and team along the way to success. They motivate their team members to understand the “bigger” picture. Leaders use this style when a new direction is needed. People who work for authoritative leaders understand that what they do matters.
