To be a great leader, one must have character. Many can lead during the good times, it is when the going gets tough, that one sees the true character of a good leader. Tribulation and selflessness plays a huge role in the ethics of a good leader. Aristotle proposed that character “is that which reveals choice, shows what sort of thing a man chooses or avoids in circumstances where the choice is not obvious” (Nussbaum, 1992 as cited in Hannah, Avolio, & Walumbwa, 2011). While competency is a vital leadership characteristic, the absence of strong character will ultimately topple a talent (Dees, 2013). Competencies are important, but character is the trump card (Dees, p. 60). It is important to be able to learn from an experience and not get marred down in bitterness. A good leader is able to show his people the teaching side of an error so that the same mistake can be avoided in the future. Instead of dwelling on the bad and letting the people see only the bad, they are able to develop themselves and their organization from the learning experience. During a crisis “leaders must use crises as “teachable moments” for themselves and others.” (Dees, 2013, p. 44). Teaching themselves is just as important as teaching others. If a subordinate can see that a leader is willing to acknowledge the crisis, it will help them to follow and understand the teaching. Selflessness A selfless leader encourages individuals to challenge limits through the basic commitment of each team member to “go a little further, endure a little longer, and look a little closer to see how he or she can add to the effort” (U.S. Army, n.d. as cited in Dees, 2013, p. 63). Selfless service lies at the heart of effective leadership because it encompasses the “ability and willingness to sense right from wrong, selfless from selfish, good from bad, and to make consistently good choices between them” (Johnson, 2014, p. 138).
