1. By studying philosophy you are able to think outside of the box. Expand your imagination and gain knowledge of how other people see and have to terms with the world around us. It is extremely interesting in trying to find the answers to questions that have been unanswered for hundreds of years. It helps put many aspect of life in perspective and give life a greater meaning. It teaches you to understand how something takes place. A perfect example would be taking an acetaminphen for a headache. You know that if you have a headache you automatically take an acetaminophen for the pain however do not take into consideration the chemicals that are absorbed into you body to alter you sensitivity of your nerves to help stop the pain. Philosophy is definitely the love for wisdom.
2. Thee Socratic Method is one of the oldest methods of thinking. It is when you ask a broad question in hopes to find the answer. I do believe that this is a good way for students to learn because it requires more effort. It makes you strategize and think critically as aspects of the subject. The more you ask the broader your think, the more information you find.
3. Critical thinking is essential in all aspects of learning. To me critical thinking is a way to analyze something from all points of views. It helps evaluate an issue, be rational and objective, use all the information gathers to come to a conclusion. Philosophy is very complex and considered a tremendous amount of critical thinking. It
Critical thinking is described as unbiased, clear and factual thought process that helps any student with any decision-making process. Critical thinking is an essential tool that every student will need to master to continue academic success. There are multiple phases of critical thinking as described by Benjamin Bloom which include remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating. The critical thinking process starts by remembering. If we can remember what we read and apply key facts we will be able to move forward to understand what decisions we need to make. From there we can then apply the facts to the decision we have to make and innovate, or create, as needed.
To add context to my response, I shall give a brief description of the Socratic method. According to the textbook, the Socratic method is “ a conversational method that proceeds by means of a series of questions and answers…” (Text). The goal of this method is to force the person being questioned to evaluate their originally inadequate responses and to work toward clearer answers brought on by thinking more deeply about what is being asked. This method allows a person to grow not by being given the answers, but by
Critical thinking means to think correctly in to find knowledge that is relevant and reliable. In terms of a liberal arts education critical thinking is crucial because a liberal arts education teaches students skills that are needed in the rapidly changing world that usually requires a lifetime of self-learning and understanding. Critical thinking is something that people usually must learn on their own; however, as a liberal arts school it is taught, so we have a better understanding of thinking critically.
Critical thinking is something that should be taking place during every lesson. I engage my students in this higher level order thinking by asking multi-level questions that may have more than one answer. I also foster thoughtful discussions during out social learning lessons, such as encouraging healthy debate. Being able to communicate and elaborate their thinking is important. Because I teach at the primary level so sometimes in order to get students to engage in critical thinking, I have to model it through discussion or through work. In the discussion, I use various questioning strategies and use various introductory phrases in order get students to open up and reveal that they are
The Socratic Method was used in ancient Greece by Socrates. His emphasis in building students to learn the process of finding the right path instead of eliciting a simple correct response created a revolution in purposeful learning. The Socratic Method works by continually asking question after question until proving an ultimate answer for
Critical thinking is the process that allows us to develop, evaluate, and reinforce the strength of our own, as well as other people’s arguments. Critical thinking is an important concept in philosophy, as well as in every other subject, because it allows us to ask deeper questions, and thus, receive deeper answers. Without critical thinking,
The phrase “Socratic method” gets tossed around quite a bit during the course of a liberal arts education. One way of describing this method is teaching by means of asking. The thought is that by asking questions, a teacher may trigger some thought in the student’s mind which comes about more organically and effectively than by the means of traditional lecture. Employing the Socratic method allows a teacher to guide a student’s train of thought toward a particular goal, and use of the method requires on the part of the teacher both a keen understanding of psychology and a clear idea as to where the line of questioning is intended to lead. The latter part of that statement becomes
Critical thinking has become something that needs to be valued and cultivated. By thinking outside the box and looking at an opinion through a different lense people are able to have a better understanding of the situation. I agree with the notion that critical thinking is all about inquiry and using our imagination as stated in the article by Hooks. The process of actively thinking needs to be engaging otherwise most students don’t feel the need to even participate in a class discussion, students and teachers alike must be actively participating in order for critical thinking to work in both parts. Additionally just like hooks stated, it is true, at least in my case that as we grow up teachers and even at some point our own family members
The critical thinking course helps you understand and stimulate your thinking process enables you to think more clearly. Everyone uses thinking in their daily lives. However, not everyone uses their thinking ability to the fullest. In a result, people make poor decisions and careless mistakes. Thinking is an ability that constantly improved over the years. There are other reasons why you should study about the thinking process. For example, college is one of the reasons. In college, you absorb an abundance of information from various authors and must comprehend complex and abstract ideas. The thinking processes are comprise of applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating the information. You are able to understand the given information
The Socratic method is a process of asking questions to get at the root of assumptions, values, and construction of arguments. Is this just an annoying habit? Is it crucial for having a happy life?
Critical thinking is the questioning of ideas. It is the process in which you take an argument and analyze it in order to conclude whether that argument is valid. Thinking critically is a good skill that can help others make intelligent decisions and helps them understand what to believe or not believe. Critical thinking is involved in our daily life. For example, every day we make decisions and before every decision we think critically if that is the right decision. We take into consideration the possible consequences of such decision and from that we reach a conclusion. Critical thinking involves disciplined thinking and it teaches you to think for yourself. It is personal growth and confidence that results from learning to exercise your mind to its fullest potential.
Critical thinking is one chunk of what education is. Students learn they need to gather the information crucial to the problem, contemplate the information and examine it on a deeper level. The students should then consider the opposite solution and finally lead to a conclusion. To illustrate, in an English class, the students are reading a book and a line from within the topic states, “The curtains were a deep blue color.” The students should dig deeper into what it actually means. Instead of taking the color of the curtains for face value, they should consider the deep blue color could possibly represent the emotion the character was experiencing at the time. We are developing their skills to
Critical thinking means accurate thinking in the search of appropriate and dependable knowledge about the world. Another way to describe it is sensible, insightful, responsible, and skillful thinking that is focused on deciding what to believe or do. Critical thinking is not being able to process information well enough to know to stop for red lights or whether you established the right change at the supermarket.
Philosophy can be described as a chance for person to undertake an opportunity to understand themselves, our world and society, and relations between ourselves and one another. Those who are able to study philosophy, can find out what is to be human, what kind of person is it good to be, and especially how are we to live a good life. I, myself, have had an opportunity to take a philosophy class and as my time in philosophy is starting to come to a close, I am suddenly realizing how Philosophy has changed the aspects and my outlook upon my life.
Socratic Method is a way of thinking that involves three steps, first step is you give an initial definition, second step you find exceptions to that definition and you present them in a form of question. Then the third step you give a better definition of the concept. Repeat all these steps until you discover the essence of the concept. Socratic method has its pros and cons not every student learns the same way it might be a good method for one student or might be easier for one but not for the other. Everyone is unique and different.
