What Makes A Great Performance?

The music performance I went to see was the University Symphony Halloween concert held in Comstock Concert Hall. This was the first time I had been to a symphony production and was eager to see what was in store. The show started off with each part of the orchestra introducing themselves in different costumes and skits. For example, the cellos were dressed in camouflage and the tubas were dressed as sheep. After a long introduction the lights dimmed and the show started. Attending this performance opened my eyes to how many elements there really were to music. It also showed me how each specific element has its own specific roll and impact on each performance.

To begin with, the scenery of the play wasn’t traditional by any means. Rather than this being a common stage with a large crowd, this was a black box theatre play. Basically, the stage was in the middle of the room and the audience surrounded the performers. The room was about the size of an average high school classroom, which made the play more personal. In fact, the actors would interact with the crowd at times throughout the play. Next, when I first entered the room, I sensed a smooth vibe from the way the room looked. Would you do anything differently? I loved the scenery for this play from all the plays I have seen this year performed by Henrico High School. The backdrop for the Northern lights was simply stunning. It even a times it shows the twinkling of lights behind the backdrop, that provides the image of dazzling stars. I’m in love with music because it always seems to make my day go by better. Rap, recitals, jazz and classical concerts top in my music preferred list. My passion for music made me very excited about going the Columbus state musical concert held in the River Center of Performing Arts In the Legacy Room. The theatre is located in a nice location giving the audience a full range of sound and sight. The sounds are incredible and I really loved how I could hear everything. The stage can be seen from any place that one decides to stand on. For this particular concert, the venue was dimly lit. On 29 January 2016. My friends and I went to a concert performed by Tiffany Austin. The concert was entitled Tiffany Austin’s Blues de Voyage hosted by Presidio Officer’s Club at San Francisco in partnership with the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music. As I attend the concert, I categorize myself as a casual listener to a well performed music. I didn’t have enough knowledge yet back then to analyze critically on the performance as it is my first time attending a house concert. It was an exciting experience and I enjoyed it a lot. The atmosphere was good as everybody in the room also enjoyed the singing and music played by the performers.

This past Wednesday, I embarked with my National Honor Society on a field trip to watch the performance of a Christmas classic, Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. The performance was a stage musical performed by the cast of the La Comedia dinner theatre. Being a strong performer in the theatre and theatre enthusiast myself, I was excited to watch this Christmas classic come to life on stage. As a child, I made frequent visits to La Comedia with family members, so I find myself very familiar with this theatre. I have always found a love for the atmosphere of the theatre, the food provided, and the performances presented on the stage. At La Comedia, they claim to provide ‘a taste of Broadway’, which immediately sets the standards for each production. I have very high expectations for each performance I attend and this performance of A Christmas Carol did not disappoint. The actors of La Comedia definitely do not lack extraordinary talent, and the entire theatre staff sticks to traditions they have developed over time, giving the entire setting a wonderful, traditional ambiance. The La Comedia performance of A Christmas Carol did an exquisite job of bringing this story to life while sticking to the classic tale, with the additions of great songs from the Broadway version and the overall atmosphere and service provided for an entertaining event.

When I first walked into the Granada Theatre I was amazed by the intricate detail put into the design of the venue. At first glance, it seemed to be an extremely high class venue, and it made sense why Professor Roy asked us to dress nicely. In all honesty I felt totally out of my element. I showed up a couple minutes late so they had me stand until the first piece was over to take my seat. The seriousness added to the layer of prestige that I had begun to attribute to the event. When I finally took my seat, I was astounded by the setup too. The piano was center stage. I was expecting an orchestra before I had arrived, but was not too disappointed to see just Yuja Wang. Without lines until the very end of the performance, it was like she was watching and learning from the play simultaneously with audience. Yet I stood there, on the brightly lit stage with a shadow on the thousands of seats spread across in front of me. I could not help but inspect every detail of the place, trying not to be conspicuous. The music echoed off the walls as we played our warm up music and grins slowly radiated on everyone's faces. I played out as loud as I could and forgot all about my nervousness, partially due to not being able to hear myself, and had the greatest time of my life.

I was able to feel more a part of the “company” and my participation create an atmosphere that got me into the world of the play. The spectacle was effective from an outsider’s perspective, but even more so when the audience member gets to be a part of what’s going on. However, because I was being pulled in so many different directions I felt like I personally missed a lot of the plot. While I was being escorted to “The Renaissance,” an important plot point was happening during “The Gilded Age.” I went through many small areas that didn’t tell me anything about the plot in general. In fact, it didn’t dawn on me until after I was done with the play that the performance spanned over the course of a long period of time. It’s an ambitious project, to be sure. However, if this production was to be done again they would have to be careful and ensure that most, if not all, parts of the play can give some insight as to what’s happening to the

I thought the place would be more like the auditorium that I saw before from my high school, but in fact the lighting and the design had made the theatre looked more like a palace. It was divided into two levels, with the second level hanging over half of the first floor. The stage was covered with two red curtains that the outer curtain would be pulled open when the performance started. The theatre itself was surrounded by many window-like niches that appeared every few feets. We actually had met the musicians before the performance. Some of them were relaxing at the field in front of the building and talking to the audiences. The male musicians were dressed up in black suits uniformly while the female musicians had either dressed in black, long dresses or trousers. The similarities between all of the musicians were their friendly attitude and the sort of excitement that they shared on their

The concert was performed on the Southam Hall stage at the NAC; this is a large hall with extremely good acoustics. It is a nationally known stage, so the quality of the hall is very good. Generally, the audience was very receptive as it was composed of adults, who were all silent. The acoustics were very good as the hall spread the sound throughout the hall without making it echo. This had a positive effect on the performance, because it was possible for the orchestra to be clearly heard from any point in the entire hall. I was impressed by the large number of students that I saw that night because the show deserved to have been heard by many young people.

This semester I have experience many live musical performances. Some of these performances have let me down but for the most part, these performances have been everything I ever expected. My two favorite performances this semester were Festival Vallenato and Ultra Music Festival. Although these two types of music are different in every way possible, the people and the performers are exactly where I feel I am in the right place.
