Beowulf, a record of Anglo-Saxon history, is a British literature story that includes the people called the Geats and the land of the Danish. The Geats is the homeland of Beowulf and is where he became a warrior. He, unlike other warriors, had extra qualities and heroic characteristics that helped him achieve glory.
The extra qualities and heroic characteristics is what made him an epic hero and what made this storyline epic. He contained qualities and characteristics such as, unworldly strength, courage, loyalty, courtesy, pride, and the ability to rule fairly. The first time his qualities and characteristics were shown was when he went to the land of the Danes. He headed there in order to save the people from a terror that had reigned over their land for twelve years, Grendel. Twelve years too long had Grendel terrorized the people. This

Beowulf went into the battle wielding no weapons and fought the monster bare hands to mighty claws. He won the fight and took Grendel's claws as a trophy. This fight and death is the cause of the next battle he undergoes; Grendel’s mother when she seeks revenge. This battle continues to show his traits as he travels to her layer, dives into the depths of the lake, and slays her with a sword found at the bottom. After completing both of these quests she went back to the King of the Danish, both times with pride, to receive his treasures and earning for slaying the monsters of their land. Once he had received his treasures he loyally went back home and gave all of his earnings to his King, Hygelac. Not long after, King Hygelac went to battle and died fighting. “He would sleep in the fire, soon. His soul, left his flesh, flew to glory.” This very quote from the epic Beowulf, sets the tone and very intense qualities of older epics. This specific epic, focuses on the hero and Beowulf, who is the only warrior capable of defeating the vicious villainous creature Grendel, and his mother. Beowulf shares the qualities of many other epic heroes such as showing the nature of being almost superhuman, being the deciding factor in the wellbeing of his people, and showing uncontested bravery no matter the obstacle they must face. In more modern times, the United States Delta Force can be considered an epic heroes based on the sheer values and courage held by its members.
During the time of anglo-saxon culture there is certain virtues that everybody must display to be considered an epic hero during that time period. Epic heroes are individuals that are good in society and they usually go out on journeys to defeat evil with god on their side. In “The Coming of Beowulf” translated by Burton Raffel section of the epic, Beowulf shows all the aspects required to be an exemplary epic hero: doer of a brave deed, a warrior who possess attributes that are valued by society (wisdom and courage), has a supernatural power, fights and overcomes evil, saves a race of people, and has noble blood running through his veins. First off, Beowulf is performing a brave deed by going to the kingdom of Dane, ruled by King Hrothgar, and helping them fight off the murderous spawn of Cain, Grendel.
