What makes human life matter?
The question “What makes human life matter?” is an idea that has been posed to me since I was younger. Prior to coming to college, I spent twelve years in Catholic education, which is where I was taught year after year that God and only God was the sole reason why all human life mattered. I was told our purpose on this earth was to know, love, and serve Him, and then we would receive eternal life. This message became so repetitive to me that my faith shifted from something that I had believed and lived to something that I had simply accepted. During the last few years of highschool I began to reject most of what I was taught, and I carried the belief that none of it applied to the meaning of life.
When I came to college, however, all of that changed. Entering a secular institution pulled me away from the pressures of trying to conform to a certain belief and way of life. It gave me the opportunity to reflect on what was truly important to me and why human life matters. I was able to reconnect with myself and approach the faith I was brought up on from a different, individualized perspective, making it much more meaningful. I soon realized that what places significance in our lives does include God, as well as other aspects. God is the starting point, but there are many things stemming from Him that contribute to the importance of our lives such as happiness, love, and wisdom.
Through personal experiences and conceptual readings, I’ve come to
Your mind can be an extremely powerful weapon, it can bring you fame and it can bring you fortune. It can bring you pain and it can bring you torment. Your mind is everything, every step, blink and breathe is controlled by it. With so many capabilities, it is a common question as to how far the human mind can be stretched, how far it will go and how long it will endure the nature of our society and the world as a whole.
We all sit and wonder what’s the meaning of life. People can research and write novels about the topic, but we will never understand the real meaning until people experience life for themselves-until people feel like they’re experiencing the beauty of life. Every person has their own ideas of their needs, wants, and desires. But people don’t know what their needs, wants, or desires unless they go and discover what they love. Everyone has their own ways to share their views on the meaning of life-everyone is unique. If people walk around a shopping mall and ask each person what they believe the meaning of life is, this topic would receive different answers and views from each person. The answer from many people would be “just to live a happy life,” but is that all people have to say about the meaning of life?
Saint Margaret School has a great impact on my faith. Each Day, I feel that we are growing closer and closer to God. God is extremely important in my life because He keeps me strong. When I feel that everything is wrong in my life, I pray to Him. Praying to God is important because, “God surely listens, understands and knows the hopes and fears you keep in your heart. For when you trust in His love, miracles happen.~unknown” God is also important to me because He has given us His one and only Son so that anyone who believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. This shows how much He truly cares for us.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee writes, “Nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don't mean anything—like snot-nose. It's hard to explain—ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves. It's slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common, ugly term to label somebody.” Black lives matter and all life matter contradict each other when they are used incorrectly. Overall, saying that all lives matter is more true than black lives matter. Even though it’s true black lives matter, all lives matter shows we cannot discriminate against individuals. Some feel that all lives matter is racist because of the way it was used to show
What is life? Life is defined as the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death. (Google) It is also defined as the existence of an individual human being or animal. (Google) The most profound and pivotal to me would be that life is defined as the period between the birth and death of a living thing, especially a human being. (Google) Yes, life is defined as stated above; but the essence of life is what you make of it, what you choose to attain and learn from it, and ultimately whether your actions matched your intent.
Their beliefs and understandings of faith are being challenged and questioned in order to strengthen their understanding. Rather than having the adults in their life tell them what to believe, they are now responsible for forming opinions about everything in their lives. For this reason, it is vital that students stay connected to God during their college years. If they are not firmly grounded in truth, the controversial ideology that college courses may bring will easily sway them. If a spiritual foundation is not there, a student will face a “spiritual struggle: an experience with which many students are familiar, particularly those who concern themselves with deep reflection on faith, purpose, and life
What makes us humans? Ask science, and we may receive a straightforward lesson on anatomy, but if we ponder the question deeper, we eventually find that it is actually a variety of intrinsic properties that define who we are as humans. In the novel “1984,” George Orwell enlightens us to what these qualities are and pushes us to decide whether the people of Oceana that lack these qualities are even human. The core characteristics of humanity as we know it are humor, imagination, spirituality, sexuality, and rebelliousness. This leads us back to Orwell’s question; do the mindless people of Oceana truly have what it takes to be human? To this, the answer is no.
The most important thing in my life right now is my Catholic faith, but my faith would be entirely different without my Catholic education. I am the oldest of two children and am the pioneer of the Jones dynasty at Sacred Heart School. As I started my Catholic education in 2009 for my kindergarten year, my family immediately saw the importance of involvement in the school community. My mother and I became more involved at school as I grew older in my faith, and in my education. Anytime there is an event at school you will see our faces; we may either be helping out or participating in a school event.
I believe college is very important I interviewed my mom, she didn’t go to college and she says she wishes she did, “ I wanted to go but we didn’t have enough money”. I asked her why she thinks people need college and this is what she said, “You need college to be more successful and to be prepared for life and mentally.” Some people may not have gone to college for any reason but they probably wanted to go. College is also good and important because you meet new people and you make new friends, also you get closer to your family. One more reason is because you earn more money. You also get to grow as a person and mentally. But an even better thing is you have a bigger chance of always having a job and losing it and you have a bigger chance of changing the world maybe with a little or big thing you do.
Regardless of your religious or non-religious position, belief is vital in your growth and achievement, and you cannot understand belief without an understanding of faith. Do not downplay this truth - faith and belief in your potential to achieve is absolutely vital.
Humans are an interesting species because of the strong need humans have to fully understand what it truly means to be human. Many fields such as history, psychology, and sociology all offer a perspective in the study of humanity, but there are distinguishable from anthropology. Anthropology differs from other humanities fields due to its holistic nature, comparative research methods, and the strong emphasis on fieldwork and participant interaction. Anthropology is the study of people throughout the world, their evolutionary history, how they behave, adapt to different environments, communicate and socialize with one another. In order for anthropologists to examine the full scope of human life, they employ the four field approach that embodies the holistic nature of the field.
My few years on this planet have been a bit confusing. I have learned of many aspects of life from which one can draw meaning, if indeed such meaning can be drawn. I have also learned that there can be no singular meaning of life to stand for us all, or even any one of us. What I have learned above all is that trying to put words to the meaning of life is a task of absolute absurdity. This is not to be confused with the idea that life has no meaning, for life certainly has meaning. However, there is no single meaning of life to be defined - life is different for us all. Therefore, rather than define life for an entire planet, I shall try to explain what life means as I perceive it, and why it means so.
Faith defines me: Since kindergarten I have always attended a catholic school. Going to a catholic high school influenced my decision to choose to DeSales to further my education. One of my extra electives I took at DeSales was Introduction to the Devout Life, so I could learn about the teachings of our school’s namesake. I also value praying which is something I do every night before bed, thanking God for three things that I was thankful for in my day and ask God to help me improve on one thing for the following day.
The consideration of the purpose of life has been ongoing and is never-ending throughout the course of history. The question itself has caused many people to generate many different strong views and opinions based on traditional, ideological backgrounds, and religious outlooks. The deliberation about the meaning of life will never end since there is not one reassuring basic, general answer. Instead, examine the question in another way, like, “What is my purpose in life?” The purpose of life varies from one person to another because of “free will.” While some people believe that for every human, life is called to some divine duty by God, everyone has a different drive that is waiting to be discovered within themselves, and people must set
Life as we know it could vanish within seconds. The next day is not promised to anyone that walks on this earth. As we live our everyday lives peacefully, we tend not to think what our mission or purpose in life is. Instead, we think what we must do for that to be a “successful” person. Despite this way of thinking, just think for a second. What makes life meaningful? What is life anyway? These questions dive right into the heart of the philosophical, psychological, and the biological aspects of life and what the true meaning of life is. This is a very arguable topic due to every person’s different perspective on life and what it means to them. In summary, I personally think that life is simply what you make of it and each person’s accomplishments has its own merit
