The whole purpose of getting an education is for students to understand and comprehend enough knowledge for them to be able to earn a living and be a productive member of society. When there are gaps in learning, knowledge bridges help close that gap. As an example, we as teachers have benchmarks and standards that we must attempt to have each student meet or exceed. Sometimes there is a gap between what students know and understand and what they should know and understand. Buehl (2011) quotes Moje (2004) who states “building bridges is a necessary part of what makes third space because it help learners see connections” (p.90). It is easy for me to have many learning bridges because just about everyone has had at some time of dental experiences.
From the year 476AD, after the last Emperor Romulus Augustulus (as displayed in source 2) of the Western Roman Empire was overthrown by European barbarians, the Roman World was greatly affected, as it was now Medieval Rome. The reason of the collapse was due to civil wars breaking out among the greedy rich competing to become emperor. Many people were killed fighting against each other with various weapons, one of them being the bullets depicted in source 3. Eventually the population began to decline and the taxes increase. Various barbarian clans (as listed in source 4) were conquering many cities and the political, financial and social structure problems led to the complete collapse after a long complicated process as represented all together
Education: Patients at Legacy Dental Arts often have the option to view the procedures they will be receiving on the overhead screens in each examination room. For many people, being able to see exactly what will happen during a procedure is empowering and informative,
Hatshepsut was an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh who used powerful pieces of art and architecture to justify her reign. Most Ancient Egyptians did not agree with her rule because she was a woman so she had to act fast in order to secure her position and to be seen as a valid ruler. At first, Hatshepsut as a co-ruler on behalf of her stepson, Tuthmosis, until he was old enough to assume the role of pharaoh. She astounded everyone by claiming the title of pharaoh for herself. She was only the third female ruler in 3,000 years. In order to persuade the Egyptian people of her legitimacy and her royal lineage, she used propaganda to make her seem as genuine as possible. She made sure that all depictions of her resembled that of a male instead of a
This class relate to my major in the way that as a Dental Assistant, I need to have the knowledge to used instruments to make my job easier and precise, just like in this class we used tools to make our sculptures faster and dynamic. When filling in a tooth I need to have the skills to reshape the teeth back to its natural shape, like in art I need to be able to use my skills to shape clay to a sculpture. In a dental office before starting a procedure, I need to be able to explain the patient what they will go through. In class, I need to present my sculpture and explain why I created it. This class and my major also require people skills and acceptance of different cultures and opinions.
Bridges are a vital part of people’s everyday life and without them people would not be able to do nearly as much as is possible today. The weather in the outer banks of North Carolina is very rough and can be very detrimental to the various structures on them. When hurricanes come near North Carolina the outer banks are hit the worst. Bridges on the outer banks keep being destroyed by weather and so the people there have to think about the cost, the effectiveness, and the need between a strong expensive bridge that will be able to handle rough weather or a cheap quick to build bridges that may fall with any extreme weather.
This year, the topic for our dental capstone project is to solve a problem in the dental field through informing the community. We figured that most people aren’t completely aware of the different specialties of dentistry. It is common to visit the general dentist every 6 months for teeth cleaning, but many people don’t know about oral and maxillofacial surgeons, or pedodontists, etc. Our purpose for this capstone project is to educate the public on the differences between the several dental specialties. By creating 3-Dimensional models of each dental office, we are able to demonstrate the uniqueness and purpose of each specialty.
There can be no discussion of Hitchcock’s distinctive filmic language and meticulous mise-en-scene without a discussion of his paintings. It is through the image of Vertigo’s Carlotta Valdes that Hitchcock identifies, projects, and explores our deepest anxieties about scopophilia, voyeurism, exploitation, and reality, and in the process, exposes the dark aspects of our characters that are often repressed. That concept of multiple identities is the essence of Hitchcock’s cinema and the essence of the film. Paintings in Vertigo make sense of and illuminate the moth-to-flame relationships Scottie has with the multiple, yet singular identities of Madeleine, Judy, and Carlotta, and in the process, erode the line between certainty and doubt. Hitchcock’s paintings explore the often obsessive and exploitative nature of its characters, and explain how the paintings themselves occupy, and force the characters to occupy, the void between reality and illusion.
Before I finished dental school in 1994, and until this moment, I have gone through different teaching experiences, varying from volunteering with my senior students, working as a teaching assistant or as a faculty member with involvement in the clinical and didactic education. These have been great opportunities that sharpened my skills, improved my performance and, most importantly, broadened my understanding in the role of an educator. To be able to guide the students through the process of learning and creating a safe environment enables the students to be the best they can be.
Where does a child battling a serious illness find peace and comfort? Special Spaces creates dream bedrooms makeovers for children with life-threatening illnesses. When I was 6 years old, I remember observing the fish swimming back and forth in the fish tank while I waited for my name to be called. Sitting in the waiting room at my pediatrics office, I thought to myself. Why would anyone want to become a dentist? You would have to deal with patient’s breaths all day. Little did I know that 16 years later, I am aspiring to become a dentist. The day that I realized I wanted to pursue the dental field was when my sister got her braces off. Growing up, I have watched her self-confidence slowly drift away, day by day. It was to the point where she no longer wanted to smile because she was embarrassed by her smile and teeth. After getting treatment and removing her braces, she became a whole different person. What the dentist and orthodontist did to her has changed her life forever. Witnessing what happened to my sister helped me find my purpose in life. I want to make a difference in peoples lives by giving them confidence and educate the importance of oral health just like my health care providers have done for my sister and I.
Limestone Smiles allowed me to witness the technical aspects of dental assisting. With being a newer establishment, they were not as busy as the previous. In this extra time is was educated on some key concepts a dental assistant would need to know. The tooth numbering system was explained to me so that I would understand what was being mentioned during each appointment. Teeth are labeled from one to sixteen on the top row from left to right: this is assuming one is looking into a client’s mouth. The remaining bottom row is the labeled from seventeen to thirty-two going from right to left. I was also taught some key concepts pertaining to labeling the mouth. The buccal (facial) surface is the side of teeth that touch the mouth. The lingual surface in the back side of one’s teeth. The median line divides the mouth in half between upper teeth eight and nine and lower teeth twenty-four and twenty-five. The side of each tooth facing towards this line is the mesial side while the side pointing away is the distal surface. The biting surface of each tooth is referred to as the occlusal surface. Knowing this information helped me to better understand the procedures I witness. I also learned about two prevalent instruments used during appointments, the explorer and the PF5. With the explorer, the explorer end is used to find cavities while the perio probe end is used to measure bone lose. An older African American male
Why I chose these two images is because I value relationships. Since bridges support you, then I think a relationship should support you as well. But, some relationships can be temporary or permanent as well as bridges too. Like the 1st image, a bridge with support and a strong foundation and the 2nd image, a bridge that has little to no support. Relationships can end with little to no support and accidents, but with support, prudence, and care, it can last as long as it
There have many attempts to solve the problem of world poverty in recent years. Average people have begun to care and are willing to help with the age old problem. However, the world is making little progress toward the eradication of poverty. Many of the things we are doing, out of the goodness of our hearts, just aren't helping. For various reasons, the typical response to poverty of donating vast sums of money to hurting countries doesn't help the poor near as much as other solutions and sometimes may even make the problem worse.
With fondness, I will always remember when I first began to consider dentistry as a future profession. My childhood mentor Dr. Spigner was having a weekend workshop for his patients, at this moment, I was exposed to dental education at its full capacity. While there we learned how to properly brush and floss our teeth, the benefits of tooth hygiene, and how fillings are applied to adolescent teeth. After learning these helpful tips, I wanted to share my newfound information about the importance of
Education is an important factor to succeed at my goal of becoming a dentist. The goal of going to dental school along with four years of undergraduate school at Northern Arizona University is a very ambitious goal. The reason why I have set such a drastic goal of becoming
