Food plays a great role in our social lives. One of the universal symbols of generosity and hospitality is food. For this reason, food is found at nearly all social gathering. Food can also be used as a symbol of celebration. In America, most people celebrate their birthday by enjoying and sharing a birthday cake with friends and family. The birthday cake is a part of the birthday celebration; it is seemingly required for the nature of the social event. Food is also the cause of many social gatherings. For example, it is common for people in America to have potlucks where every guest brings a dish to share with all who attend. People go to potlucks for food and socialization. In addition, holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas also
A famous black abolitionist, Alfred M. Green, urges his fellow African Americans to strive for the ranks in the Union forces despite the disapproval of them to join, delivered in his speech at the convention of colored people in Philadelphia in 1861. He does so by connecting with his audience through use of empathetic tone, conveying his utmost message for mentioning their similar struggles as African-Americans to appeal to their feelings. Green appealed to his audience through knowledge and as an educated person, where he symbolized how joining the Union forces may finally “overthrow the tyrant system” of slavery in the south, which was the primary goal of their forefathers.
Whenever we eat that mouthwatering burger, we usually take time and savor every bite we get out of the juicy meat, fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. During this moment, it never actually occur to us and wonder where all these items came from, all we cared about was how tasty the meal was and how affordable we got it for. This is what Charles Reich described in his excerpt, how American culture has much “shabbiness and tawdriness” concerning our consciousness. People these days are not well informed regarding the issue of how well are our products made. We don’t really know much about whether or not it was made in a humane manner. All we usually care for is the price of an item and its taste. Nevertheless, the book by Peter Singer and Jim

The production and consumption of food has had an impact in Americans. According to a "The Washington Post" article, How a national food policy could save millions of American lives, the food industry affects Americans in economic, health and environmental aspects. This problem has not been resolved by the government. Government representatives and officials have spoken about ways to fix it but they have not come to an agreed solution for the damages caused by the food system. Some of the damages are income inequality, obesity, climate change, greenhouse gas emission, diabetes, other chronic diseases, and more. The American government is in conflict. They acknowledge the problems and say they will do something about it, but truly, they
In American culture, we typically center our food choices around american options such as burgers, fries, chicken fried steaks, and chicken tenders. However, I decided to seek out a food from a culture that differs than my American background. I sought out a restaurant that served and Indian cuisine and one that I wouldn’t usually try. I decided Indian for the reason that I love spice in food and the spice that the Indian culture uses in their food should really compliment the food. The restaurant that I found was called Taco Naan, which combines cultures and serves food that cater to Mexican and Indian cultures.
Food is closely related to people's lives and it is considered the most important element in Chinese culture. Chinese food is famous all over the world too. American Chinese cuisine differs significantly from the traditional Chinese cuisine and even though the variation in taste can be so it is still attractive to many people. When it comes to food, Chinese people always care about the color, taste, smell and shape of Chinese dishes. In 1784, a group of passengers on the ship Empress of China became the first Americans to land in China and they were also the first group of people to eat Chinese food; it was the
Every culture has some different patterns of behavior and characters of observing and understanding symbols, which heave upon the actions of its people. As a notable scholar Robert J. House remarks, “When cultures come in contact, they may converge in some aspects, but their idiosyncrasies will likely amplify” (as cited in Bhagat & Steers, 2009). The occasion of Thanksgiving has religious, historical and cultural origins, and is celebrated in many parts of the world in the same spirit of celebration. A hearty, large meal is prepared and close friends or relatives are invited to share the celebrations with. The general mood and behaviors during Thanksgiving Day is similar to the celebratory occasions in other cultures, as they may all be celebrated with family and friends by sharing meals and celebrations. However, the food items selected for Thanksgiving meals, such as baked or roasted Turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie and other fall vegetables are different in their nature. Also, a prayer of appreciation is said before the meal, thanking God for the bounties and blessings of the previous year, which
Thanksgiving is considered one of the most well-known holidays and celebrations in the United States, and is a traditional holiday that relates back to the American culture. Even though the history of the first Thanksgiving is unknown and unclear, it has gone on years of being celebrated. What makes Thanksgiving so important to the American culture is that it is not like certain holidays. ________ states that to remember the Puritans for settling in America, a traditional family would provide and cook food that was supposedly apart of the first Thanksgiving. To the American culture, turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes are traditionally served and can come in a variety of ways.
While the food given to slaves were mostly leftovers or undesirable, the style of food that slaves ate has become known as soul food and has become quite popular in today’s society.
Prior to the War, the American diet heavily consisted of “red meat, butter, wheat flour, and sugar.” Red meats, wheat flour, sugar, and butter were all consumed by many American families on a weekly basis, which is why the United State Food Administration felt the need to place restrictions on consumption and encourage the consumption of “milk, vegetables, nonwheat cereals, fish and poultry.” The American diet consisted primarily of these foods because these foods could be grown and harvested in America.
Most Americans start the morning with the most important meal of the day, breakfast. Their breakfast usually contains fruit and dairy. Do they ever stop to think where their food comes from, or who works so hard to provide us with these foods? No, they don’t. Every day before the sunrise farmers are out doing their job to help Americans get the protein, vitamins, and fiber they need to start the day off. Feeding Americans isn’t the only thing farmers do.
With the fourth of July approaching, many of us are in the mood to celebrate all things American. We are known around the world for our movies and music. Many argue that it was American culture that actually brought down the Berlin wall a couple decades ago as much as our staunch military stand against communist encroachment around the world. People in the East Block countries wanted to go to rock concerts and wear blue jeans and drive a real car. Food is yet another staple of American culture, and we do love to push it to its deep fried best at times.
“Dietary patterns of Americans differ widely, but most Americans eat a diet that could best be described as in need of improvement”. Compared to other countries, the American diet is very different. I have first hand experienced how much different Americans eat from other countries. For a brief, but very beneficial and productive time, I lived in Barcelona, Spain with my host family. Over in Spain, they eat much more fresh, organic food. There was a lot more seafood in the average diet. The meal configuration over there is also different than ours. Lunch is the largest meal eaten every day; different than America, where dinner is the largest.
Korea was one country under the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) and they had the same language and essential culture. But for the last 6 decades and more Korean peninsula was divided into two sides North and South along a fortified DMZ. Why did they split? What caused the division? How did that division came about? The origins of this split begins with the Japanese conquest of Korea at the end of the nineteenth century. The Japanese empire annexed Korean peninsula in 1910, but Japan was ruling the country through a puppet ruler since it’s victory in the first Sino-Japanese War in 1895. Thus Korea was Japanese colony during 1910-1945. After the end World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union rose at two super powers of the globe. With their
Eating brings people closer together everyday, and for everyone, there are important memories that have been created because of food. Whether it’s a formal dinner, or an informal picnic, there will always be special bonds between people because food was involved. We need to have traditions with food because they form and strengthen the bonds between us.
