America has become a major player when it comes to diversity. Currently, we see diversity all around us; in people, ideas and even philosophies. However, when referring to the school systems, teachers and students, it is essential to understand that differences will certainly arise. In such a traditional country, often the question of what curriculum or philosophy should be implemented appears. At this point, the reader can observed educators focusing on an essentialist curriculum, while others are focusing on the idea of social reconstruction. First, it is fundamental to understand what are these two philosophies, and their purposes. Then, the question is what should the educator do? Which one should be applied?
To begin with, in the philosophical perspective on education, the instructors focus on the nature of knowledge and how we acquired this knowledge through the educational approaches currently applied all over the world (Cohen, 1999). In which two out of the four major philosophies include essentialism and reconstructionism. In the first place, essentialism was an idea that developed during the 1920s and 1930s by William Bagley. He stresses the basic idea that there is common knowledge that needs to be transmitted to learners in a disciplinary and systematic way (Cohen, 1999). The essence of this philosophy relies on the emphasis that instructors should teach the most basic academic knowledge, skills, and character development, and try to embed virtues as well as
As a lower level elementary teacher, I hold a strong belief in essentialism. I agree that students must know the basics of academic knowledge so they can build upon that. My goal is to help my students master the basics
Throughout this paper, I will be giving oversight to the four curriculum ideologies; Social Reconstruction, Social Efficiency, Scholar Academic and Learner
When deciding upon a philosophy of education, I was torn between two: Progressivism and Essentialism. The idea of educating students with real-world experiences is one reason I can identify with Progressivism. On the other hand, the "back-to-basics" approach to teaching is a reason I believe in Essentialism. It is my belief that combining the
However previous to this discussion the classroom was a learning environment that was systematically equipped to assimilate. We as students fell into the curriculum but often times had difficulty identifying with the material presented. Essentially, the presence of diversity is useless if we do not dig deeper into each culture represented. Equally important, is the significance of each culture finding themselves within the curriculum. When topics such as racial tensions in America are presented in the classroom individuals from different cultural backgrounds and walks of life are not only present but seen vividly throughout the courses of society. This transition from a homogenous community to an imagined community can at times be
The purpose of public school education is to provide students with the tools and skills to continue to higher education, and to help them pursue their goals and dreams in life. It is meant to provide inspiring, positive and culturally affirming experiences that make students excited to learn and succeed. While many students are prepared properly in public schools, this is not true for all. For several students, education is not stimulating, and is dull and boring, or perhaps provides negative and detrimental experiences. Recognizing that there are flaws in the public school system is the first step to making positive changes in the system. A proper education is crucial a competitive society such as this one. Public education must provide for all children equally in order to to prepare them to control their own fate later on in life. Unfortunately, due to the inability to incorporate a multicultural curriculum, many times only students of the dominant culture are given a full and comprehensive education, while students of subdominant cultures and different backgrounds are left behind. This sets them back significantly, making it harder for them to compete in this society no matter how hard they work. While it is impossible for a single person to make the significant changes necessary to the institution of public education, if all government officials, administrators, teachers, parents, and students come together, significant changes can be made in a positive direction. This
Developing a personal education philosophy is a process that may never end, but I believe that I am in the midst of creating one based on my own experiences and the lessons I am receiving in college. After examining the various education philosophies outlined in the “Teachers, Schools & Society” textbook by Myra Pollack Sadker and David Miller Sadker, I have decided that my present philosophy is an eclectic combination of Essentialism and Progressivism. This approach covers my beliefs and the way I hope to interact with students.
Throughout education there are six main philosophies to take into consideration, and they are as followed. From a teacher centered classroom approach they include Essentialism, Behaviorism, and lastly Positivism. In a student centered classroom approach they are Progressivism, Humanism, and Constructivism. What do these terms mean? Essentialism is and educational philosophy that there is a common core of information and skills that an educated person must have. Behaviorism is a psychological theory and educational philosophy that asserts that behaviors represent the essence of a person and that all behaviors can be explained. A person acts the way they do for a reason. Finally positivism is a social theory and educational philosophy that limits truth and knowledge to what is observed and measured. These are all important for a teacher to take into consideration. Progressivism is an educational philosophy that emphasizes that ideas should be tested by experiments and that learning is better developed in questions developed by the learner. Humanism is an
The current education system has been shaped through the influence of both traditional philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle as well as contemporary philosophers inclusive of Freire and Dewey. It is our duty as educators to be able to recognize and adapt the ways of particular philosophies to guide the teaching and learning process. I believe in the power of education and importance of this commodity in producing a more productive and developed society. The purpose of education goes beyond the teaching subjects; it also encapsulates the teaching
As American classrooms and Churches become exponentially diverse teachers will compete against an immense ambit of student’s abilities to learn. There is importance in classrooms, applying cultural problems, and the strengths in addition to weakness’ of diversity. As teachers accommodate their methods to reach the student they apply regular methods and receive better results by making the student with exceptionalities become normal. There is just that range alone that makes a huge impact on the classroom
This illustrates to my point because the educator in the placement I worked at when the child was upset they would sit near the child and talk to them and put them near their arms to give them comfort. This connects to How does learning happen because the educator recognizes the child development and self regulation by communicating with the child (33) . Also, this connect to Gardner because this helping the child develop interpersonal inteligence because the educator was showing the child that she cares for him by sitting near the child and talking to the child ,by doing what the educator did will help the child care for other and understands other (Benson,2016)
This encompasses the philosophies of Essentialism and Existentialism. Learning academics is important but so is being able to be a child and experiencing the play necessary to move through the life skills needed to be a healthy, happy and productive adult.
In the United States diversity will become progressively more reflected in our schools. In our school, students are becoming increasingly diverse, by assisting pupils to attaining knowledge, attitudes they need in order to become active citizens within our society. Teaching a group of diverse students from different backgrounds, ethnic, and other cultural groups in a school environment that supports diversity within a classroom setting incorporate teaching. More importantly, it is important that within schools teachers as well as students need to understand one another’s background; such as their culture, race, and ethnicity. For students it prepares them for life in an culturally diverse society. Throughout this paper it is focused on multicultural education in our society.
First, essentialism focuses in teaching through core courses, using the essentials of knowledge and development. Essentialism is a traditional teacher-centered philosophy. It emphasizes the great importance of transferring knowledge from the older being to the younger generation. The teacher is the expert on the subject, and students listen and learn what is being taught. The teacher is also the role model to his or her students. School is the institution students come to learn.
What I considered as I created ideas regarding professional implications regarding the use of technology in the classroom is that I plan on incorporating it as much as possible in my own classroom. Today especially, technology is more important than ever and a student should be
and I would not have it any other way. Each individual student does not learn in the same way so why should I teach every lesson in the same way or style. Finding the correct balance between direct instruction and a constructivist approach can help reach a wider range of students and learning styles. Combining a strong traditionalist perspective with a touch of progressive and humanistic instruction will help to expand the influence made on our youth today.
