What was happening in your town?

I was born on April 13, 1994, in a small town in the USA. Today, I am a college going student, busy with my studies and other activities. However, during a history lesson, something made me ponder as to what the world would have been like in the year I was born or the month. I listen regularly to the news, but those headlines are forgotten by the end of the day. I just wondered what my city or town or the country was like in the year 1994. I was thinking about going back by two decades. Well, it would certainly be interesting to know more about my country and the world. Rwanda gained independence in 1962. The minority Tutsi community members were always a target of the ethnic Hutu extremists (Rwanda: Background to Genocide 2017), and the violence continued even after the independence. Negotiations took place at times, and the Hutu extremists were angered by the power-sharing agreement in 1993. The Civil war in Rwanda in 1990 mounted the tensions between the Hutu majority and the Tutsi minority. Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) was created by the Rwandan exiles, and it was made of mostly Tutsis (Rwanda genocide: 100 days of slaughter 2014).
Rwandan genocide The Rwandan genocide is one of the darkest moments in human history. What sparked the violence against the Tutsi was an airplane crash that carried the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi. A carefully organized genocide carried on for more than 100 days and killed about 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu moderates (Rwanda genocide: 100 days of slaughter 2014). In just a few hours, Hutu rebels took over the streets of Kigali and eliminated Rwanda’s leadership successfully within a day. Hutu extremists took advantage of the political vacuum created and thus took control of the country. Detailed lists of Tutsi targets were prepared with names, addresses and license plates. Rwandans were soon murdering their neighbors and people were encouraged to kill those on the lists.
