She took a more active role in part because that’s who she was and she needed to provide extra help to her husband. Eleanor was a very visible part of the administration, and the circle of women around her became more important than they might have been with a different president and first lady. Before Eleanor Roosevelt, the role of the first lady was not a political role; it was merely just a formal title of the president’s wife. Eleanor Roosevelt paved the way for all presidents’ wives to come by being active in politics during and after her husband’s presidency. Prior to World War II, many women were unemployed, due to the Great Depression which had started a decade before. With men always getting preference for jobs, there were very few jobs left for women. Consequently, not only were many occupations were reserved for men, but men were also paid wages up to five times higher for the same task as women. Some states also barred married women from holding jobs. However during World War II, America produced at an efficiency which was higher than ever. This meant that the women had an increasing number of jobs. Jobs in the public sector opened up. Since 1939, women progressively changed the idea of patriarchy and the cliché thinking of an average woman in the United States to be a wife and mother.
Throughout 1914 to 1945, the role of women changed immensely. During the 20th century, the role of women evolved, from the nurtures and home-makers and was expected that their objective in life was to get married, bare kids and devote their entire life to their husbands. But during World War 2 with the fast, growing incline of need for soldiers proved that women had to participate in jobs which were usually only consisted of men. After WW 2 with all the soldiers returning from war, a lot of women were fired to re-employ men and women were expected to go back to the roles of a housewife. Before, during and after WW 2, the role of women changed indefinitely and shaped today's society.
Households were strictly patriarchal in which the man of the house made all the important decisions. Women's jobs at the time were mostly relegated to domestic service and occasional work at harvest time. The jobs were always of low pay, low status, and required little training. In addition to this females were not legally permitted to inherit land or property. This was the bleak life of a woman, with little hope or power, and always the subordinate of men.
In the 1930 's, the roles of men and women varied greatly. From the workplace to the home, the expectancies were different. Their behaviors were night and day. The views of both genders were also very different.
Grace Kelly, an American actress, said: “Women’s natural role is to be a pillar of the family.” The roles of women has been change over the centuries, with the most dramatic changes taking place, Women’s Rights Movement, in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. They fight for their equality and the rights to make their life become better in 1900s. Men were leaving, people were fighting, and many were dying. World War II was one of the hardest times, and during that difficult time, women stepped up their roles and had a huge impact during the war. The women during World II in the United States and in Europe impacted the war by taking different jobs and becoming employed in the workforce, working in the home with normal household responsibilities while supporting the men oversees, and entering into the military with sacrifice.
In the times of the 1950’s, things were thought to be much simpler. The Second World War had just ended and people were getting used to having a normal lives again. Men were going off to work to provide for their family and the women were staying at home caring for their children, cleaning the house and putting food on the table for their husband after a long day of work. Chanel Courant Women and the American Experience, 1870 to 1980 Final Short Reflection Paper Between 1920 and 1975, women in America experienced a lot of ups and downs in terms of social change and liberation, and equal amounts of progression and regression. Following the 19th Amendment, feminism lost its grip on women as they sought more personal liberation which was often achieved through flapper aesthetics, and this created a cultural backlash in the Great Depression era of the 1930’s, with a retreat from modernity and a return to conservative values that lasted through World War II and the 1950’s. However, following such a restrictive era came a new wave of free-thinking and feminist liberation in the 1960’s, that echoed the 1920’s in some ways, but this time brought more lasting changes and ideologies focusing on women collectively rather than individually,
After getting an education as well as knowing there worth in society women knew there were more than just a wife and mother. During WWII women demonstrated their power to think in a world without men as they were off fighting the war. Women began to understand that they had more to offer the world other than housekeeping and raising children. In addition, many women wanted to continue working after the war as they had held jobs with responsibilities as well as earning wages. Furthermore, women were the ones making financial decisions as well as working in positions with higher responsibilities. Many women as well as minorities were simply casted a side to make room for the returning solders. This created a silent discontent among women
The 1920s had a big impact on American life all around; however, one of the biggest changes during this time period was in the roles of women. During this time period, women started dressing different, leaving the house, getting jobs, and gaining rights. On top of all of that, they had a bigger role in education, they began taking parts in politics, and divorce became more of a common thing. This may not seem like a big deal to people today, but this was very important at the time. Prior, women had next to no rights. They lived to wait on and please their husbands. Women rarely even left the house. This time period could be said to have paved the way for modern day feminism and women’s roles. This was the time period when they began to be free and stop worrying about how society thought they should live. However, the question still remains: Did the changing roles of women in the 1920s really have a significant effect on women’s roles today? In the next few pages, one will be given examples of women’s role before, during, and after the 1920s. In each paragraph, the roles, rights, impacts, and more that women had at these times will be explained. To conclude, a comparison on how women were thought to act in these different time periods will be made in order to come up with an answer for the question stated above.
