We have all heard the complaints about standardized testing before and I was always wondering what are the negative effects that to our education system, society and economy. What exactly went wrong in standardized test and why it is a major problem for our education system? This research is going to explain what standardized testing is and how it’s been used in higher education. And I would like to compare the differences of standardized testing between the United States and China. The purpose of this research is to find the existing issues and possible solution to solve the problems caused by standardized tests. Based on research that I have already explored, I found how the standardized tests impact students’ academic success. Grade based …show more content…
The research reports that over half of the examinees were not comfortable since from the beginning of the test they were stressed out, the students who tortured with anxiety. The SAT is one example of a standardized test. In the 21st century, the number of standardized tests been given in schools has greatly increased and the frequency with which exam are given faster compared to the 1990s. No doubt standardized tests are an effective tool for instructors to be able track their students work but it can be too much pressure for students. However, standardized tests is based on class material and other courses content have been delivered in a rigid, circumscribed way. The more standardized tests are given, the more they sap the energy of educators and draining the life from students’ learning. The standardized test can have negative impacts on the students and educators and also on the education system, and lead to problems such as lower graduation …show more content…
Many different types of tests can be “standardized” in the same way. Test specialists consider the standardized tests to be a fair and objective methods of assessing the academic achievement of students, mainly because the standardized format, coupled with computerized scoring, reduces the potential for favoritism and subjective evaluations. Standardized tests could be used for different educational purposes. As an example, they could be used to determine the student’s academic performance and identify students who need academic support and place students in different course levels or award diplomas. Assessment tests are one forms of standardized tests and it has been designed to measure the skills and knowledge students learned in school, and determine the academic progress they have made over a period of time. For example the assessment test students need to take at the beginning of the first year of college or university. The assessment tests can be used to identify the academic placement for a student too. For educational purposes they can be used to hold schools and educators accountable for educational results and student performance, to evaluate whether students have learned what they are expected to learn, to determine if they have met learning
While a few standardized tests over a student’s school career can be helpful to make sure students are on track and teachers are educating their students, the United States education system has far too many standardized tests. The U.S should reduce the number of tests given to students each year. The current amount of testing stresses students and forces teachers to “teach to the test”. Standardized testing has not and will not improve the American school
Students dread the time of the year when they stop with their course material and begin to prepare for test. Everyone is in agreement that some type of revolution is needed when it comes to education; eliminating standardized test will aid the reform. The need for standardized testing has proven to be ineffective and outdated; some leading educationalist also believe this because the tests do not measure a student’s true potential. This will save money, stop labeling, and alleviate stress in students and teachers.
Standardized tests are exams that are supposed to measure a child’s academic knowledge but have long been a controversial subject of discussion. Although it is one method to see how a child is performing, is it the best method? Standardized testing can be biased or unfair, inhibit both the teacher’s and the children’s creativity and flexibility, affect funding for schools, cause untested subjects to be eliminated from the curriculum, and cause anxiety for children and teachers.
Standardized tests inhibit the ability for students to perform well on stress inducing tests; thus, students question their abilities to succeed, and they lack engagement in their educational learning. Standardized tests produce the feeling of anxiety as heart beats accelerate, bodies’ tremble, faces flush, sweat pores open, hands grip tighter, and muscles tense. As the test dates come closer, students are
Standardized testing has been ruling over the lives of students, making or breaking them in their education without fair judgement. Tests like the SAT and the ACT count for way too much when applying to colleges, which in turn limits the student 's capabilities to thrive in an environment that would benefit them. There are many problems within a standardized test that deems them to be unreliable as a true test of knowledge. Although designed to test groups of students on intelligence, standardized testing neglects to fairly acknowledge the abilities of each unique student which reflect their true capabilities.
Students are overwhelmed with school, work, extra-curricular activities, family, etc. Perhaps standardized tests are a major contributor to students’ stress. A standardized test is any test scored in a consistent manner and requires test-takers to answer identical questions. Among the most common include the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT). According to the article “Standardized Testing Has Negatively Impacted Public Schools” from Opposing Viewpoints in Context, the beginnings of standardized tests occurred during World War I when the American Psychological Association developed a “ground-administered test” to eliminate inefficient recruits (Solley 3). Today, standardized tests are necessary for college admission. Just last month, in March of 2016, College Board, the non-profit organization responsible for administering the SAT, altered the format of the test. It is now formatted more similar to the ACT and includes an optional essay reducing the score from 2400 to 1600. Many advocates argue standardized tests accurately measure academic intelligence and hold teachers and schools accountable. In today’s society, standardized tests have become the norm, and unfortunately, people overlook their negative effects despite research substantiating arguments about their disadvantages. Standardized tests are disadvantageous because they hinder education and contain bias.
Standardized testing has become a controversial topic in recent years, parents, students, teachers, principals and almost anyone who has a relationship with education is affected by this topic. People are either for or against standardized testing, some believe it is the only fair way to compare students others believe that the tests are too greatly stressed in school and are a nuisance to education. Standardized tests are stressed greatly, students learn testing material all year not focusing on anything else deemed unimportant by the test makers. Every student has the same amount of time and question on tests; they also are tested on the same subjects which the test makers believe are most important for children to learn. Standardized tests are used for many things such as ranking students on a national basis and government funding for schools.
Education has been an important part of society for centuries. Over the years it has slowly evolved into what it is today. The topic of education has been controversial since the beginning. It seems as though there is always someone that sees a need for change in how students are being taught and assessed. More specifically, many people think that standardized testing is not an effective way to assess students. While on the other hand, many also believe that standardized testing is the most efficient and effective way to assess people of all ages. The debate over standardized testing has been shown to effect students and the community in many different ways. Standardized assessments have had huge impacts with both teachers and students. Whether one thinks standardized testing is effective and efficient or misdirecting and unproductive it is a big part of the educational system. While the argument may present that standardized tests leads to simulated knowledge, others argue that standardized tests are very effective in assessing students.
Nine year old Gianna is in fourth grade, and took her first standardized test last year. Gianna is a marvelous student and is very attentive in class; however, when it came to the test she did not do well. The whole time she was stressed out, and had no idea what she was doing because she could not focus. Her teacher spent so much class time trying to teach the class about the test that she did not get to learn much about the other subjects. For example, Gianna loves social studies, but her teacher mostly focused on math and language arts. Standardized tests are a form of test that requires all students to answer the same questions, or questions that are similar to each other. Standardized tests have gotten worse throughout the years because
I do kind of good and kind of bad on standardized tests because there might be some questions that I understand and there might be some that I might not understand.I consider myself as a bad test taker because I rarely do well on the tests that I take I might have some questions right but I'm still gonna fail that test. I've always been this way because since I started to go to school I've taken tests and some I've failed and some I've done good in but the thing is that even though I study hard for the tests I'm still going to fail something on the test. How I prepare for a standardized test is by studying for a certain amount of time minutes, hours maybe days no matter if I have to do it in class after school or maybe while I'm walking. What
Nowadays, students across America are subjected to take tests that determine whether they are liable of going to the next level. Standardized tests have become the agenda by which students’ achievements are measured. They have become the only way teachers and schools measure the achievement process of students. Because they have become the only way to rationalize students’ learning progress, teachers have begun teaching to the test (Longo 56). Standardized tests only measure students’ learning progress; it does not improve it.
Although the standardized test has a negative impact on our performance, it also has some positive impact. One of the main purposes of testing is to set a standard: a performance baseline of progress for all parties involved in the educational process—students, teachers, and school districts, and to hold them accountable for achieving it. The idea is to detect areas where students usually fail, or fall behind and promote improvement, not punish them. Besides, tests help remove bias some teachers may exhibit towards students and make the evaluation process more objective. This is usually achieved by using special automatic machines that score exams. Also, due to the usage of these methods, the potential of human error is decreased or even
Because education is the most essential part in a country’s development, there are so many controversies about the system or the type of education. [The question is whether standardized tests are good for students or not.] It’s the truth that education is associated with almost everyone in the society, so of course everyone wants to find the best way of education. Since a test is an effective way to measure how much students have learned from classes, people have already created two styles of tests, which are standardized tests and local tests. Some people are confused about what the standardized tests are. According to Popham (1999), “standardized tests are designed in such a way that the questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures,
Standardized testing is the bane of the United State’s educational system. First you must know about the history of the standardized education movement and what is did to society. The losses of learning time,The losses of love and creativity of learning,The creation of a sterile/changes environment of a school day, week,or even month, and the physical and emotional effect on student and teachers.
The debate on standardized tests and its adequacy in testing a student’s knowledge about a subject has been going on for many years. Tests, in general, has been around for centuries and without them there would not be progress and no gleams of progress. Students ranging from elementary school to high school have experienced standardized testing. Teachers, educators, and parents are also involved in the students’ lives, which revolves around the tests, one way or another. There are many views on standardized test. However, the three most common views are: educators who are for standardized test which benefits students, educators who are at the other extreme of opposing standardized tests, and educators who view tests are a benefit if done in appropriate amounts.
