Keven Larson What were Targets response and settlement of the 2013 data breach? Their delayed and unorganized response to the initial crisis caused them to lose millions. Subheadings: When did the breach happen? The breach happened from Nov 27th thru Dec 6th of 2013. Hackers installed malware to steal Target’s data. Security alert about the breach was noticed on Nov 30th and passed on but nothing was done about it and again on Dec 2nd. When and how was the public informed? The public was told of the breach on Dec 8th. It wasn’t until Dec 15th when they finally looked into the cause and fixed it. Target Data Breach, 2013-2015 Starting on Nov 27th, 2013 Target had a security breach that began stealing millions of customers data in the U.S. After spending tens of millions of dollars dealing with this crisis they now have to wait until this holiday season to really see if it is over or there needs to be more time for the trust to be earned back. According to Target, the hack from November 27 till December 15, 2013, affected U.S. stores only. Information that was garnered was Customer names, credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates and CVVs. In the days prior to Thanksgiving 2013, someone installedmalware in Target’s (TGT) security and payments system designed to steal every credit card used at the company’s 1,797 U.S. stores. Six months earlier the company began installing a $1.6 million malware detection tool made by the computer security firm FireEye (FEYE), whose customers also include the CIA and the Pentagon. Security alert about the breach was noticed on Nov 30th and passed on but nothing was done about it and again on Dec 2nd.
