Americans developed territories in the West such as Texas, Oregon, Utah, and California. Before the conquest the development, the west of the Mississippi River was controlled by mountain men. They were exploration and worked as trappers for the fur company and sold and bought beaver pelts. Texas was a Spanish colony, and Americans were looking for land for growing cotton, establishing cotton gins, and bringing slaves. Mexican government believed they were losing control of Texas. Slavery was legal in Mexico, so they curtail United States immigration to the region. It increased taxes and built new military posts, and banned American settlement.
