Remember when you were ten years old and your parents asked, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” You’d smile, and without batting an eye, answered doctor, fireman, teacher and so on. But nowadays, you may not be so self-assured. When your professor

How does the content of the program you are applying to relate to your present and future academic and career goals? (150-200 words) *
Being able to achieve an important aspect in life can be transitioning, gratifying, and most importantly, memorable. Before beginning to decide where to start in life, an accomplishment or event that I achieved is relative to the start of a puzzle. In a sense, this is the root of a career or goal for the future. As for a career choice, becoming a computer hardware engineer occurred because of a successful attempt of working a computer at a very young age. As a child, I have always found computers to be both intriguing and fascinating because of their functionality to handle everyday situations.
My future after high school did not come as easy as some people’s may. I was at a confusing state where higher education was necessary, but was it worth it? I completed my ACT test, visited multiple colleges, and was accepted to the colleges I applied for. The path of my future was still very unclear, until I visited the University of River Falls the fall before my high school graduation. The thought of independence, finding new friends, changing my values in life, and proving to those who love me who I can become, left me without a question that I would become part of the Falcon family.
“What do you want to be when you grow up,” is a question that I have been occasionally asked throughout my life. In elementary school, I, an avid bookworm and grammar enthusiast at the time, answered, “an editor.” In middle school, my answer changed to, “a physicist,” because my very first public presentation was about a physics project. In high school, the question asked has evolved from what I want to be, to what I will be. Never in my life would I have dreamed of saying, “A teenage parent.” For my parents, however, that was the only assertive answer they had in their life, because my mother got pregnant in high school. The freedom to choose what you want to be has, in most cases, subconsciously been taken for granted.
Coming to the point of my current career choice has been a long road. My idea of what a career is or should be has changed with circumstances and age. According to Weintraub (2005), "the average worker spends only four years in a job and will have 12 jobs in as many as five career fields during his or her working life." (para. 1) My first career was marriage and motherhood followed by a surprising healthcare career. What the future holds waits to be seen. With a bachelor of
The career that I would like to attain in five years would be an occupation as an independent bookstore owner. I would like to own and operate my own bookstore in Mississauga that would compete with larger chains by providing the community with an engaging, personable experience that only small, independent businesses can provide. As a bookstore owner, I would manage the everyday activities of the business, including customer service, training and motivating employees, and developing strategies for the long-term success of my store. This career may be hard to achieve within five years, but it is highly appealing to me and is an ideal goal for me to strive towards. As we’ve learned throughout this class, there are several aspects of
In order for me to tell you about my future, I must first tell you about my past. I was always a very determined person, what ever I put my mind to I can accomplish. Ever since I was younger and I read about the JonBenet Ramsy murder case, I was heartbroken and for that little girl but I was also heartbroken that she will never have a voice again. I wanted to be that person who brought voices back from those who didn’t have one anymore. I wanted to be a homicide detective.
Growing up, there was several different career paths I wanted to take but was not reachable at the time. Throughout my high school my career goal was to be a civil or mechanical engineer. At the time, it wasn’t clear to me what a engineer’s job function is. My family urged me to pursue that dream just because of the perks that comes with it such as money. Math was never my strong suit, neither was school and to become an engineer, several mathematics courses are required. My first two years as a transfer student in college, I had no idea what my career path should be if engineering doesn’t work out. After taking careful consideration, working in the tech industry was something that needed to be done. A few friends of mine gently pushed me in that direction but my vision to pursue a career in tech was a bit fuzzy. Eventually I started leaning towards business, but by then it was already to late for me to switch majors. I chose Sociology as my major because I found the courses interesting to learn, and it is something I can apply to business. Earlier this semester, I decided to push towards specific fields such as sales or human resources. Eventually, I do see myself In a leadership position at work such as a management position in my work place. I do believe I have what it takes to become a manager, but only after being with a company for some time so I can understand the concepts and how to adapt to the given environment.
After graduating high school, I had decided to take a path that is more common now than it used to be. I will be going to school at community college first to get general education course done right away and cheaper, then I will transfer over to a public school to finish off my bachelor’s degree. I thought long and hard on what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and I decided that I wanted to major in interior design and minor in business. As this is a growing industry, more and more people are starting to enroll in interior design programs. I know many people that are currently working at interior design companies and a few people who work independently. I want to work independently, hence the business minor. I would like to pursue my future career by starting at Ivy Tech Community College and end at Ball State University. This will minimize the amount of money I need to borrow and it will also decrease the amount of time I will need to be in school. Four years later, if I average the amount of tuition, fees, transportation, and books and supplies, I will be around $35,000- $40,000 in debt. This is about $10,000 a year.
After this position, I hope to become a representative either for a non-profit organization or a certain manufacture.
While preparing for this essay I realized that a majority of the career paths I want to go down involved a similar theme, fashion, and creativity. After further assessment of my chosen paths, I feel like my personality and the way that I work would be better suited for a business of my own, rather than working through a company like Sephora or Avon. I know I’d be more comfortable working in a place where I can choose which brands and techniques I use on clients, rather than a job where I’m forced to use certain items that I don’t completely trust. Using tools I’m comfortable with and using my own creative energy, aside from someone else 's, would make me feel happier with my work. Although I’ll have to work with clients in the future, I know that having that baseline will make my work all the more satisfying. I don’t personally have anyone or know anyone in my family who has a career quite like this, I know a few people who have either done this for a career either as a way of living or as a stepping stool to launch their own business. One of the people I’ve researched is the drag queen Miss Fame, also known as Kurtis Dam-Mikkelsen. Kurtis started his career as a male model in California, soon moving to New York and becoming a makeup artist. At the same time becoming the drag queen Miss Fame. While in New York he did his own, along with other people’s, drag makeup. After an appearance on the
