What will I do to “claim”1 my education? I have to first ask. Am I claiming my education? According, to Adrienne Rich I should be just because I am in college does not mean I am claiming it. She explicitly states claiming as “to take as the rightful owner; to assert in the face of possible contradiction.”1 In contrast to receiving meaning “to come into possession of: to act as receptacle or container for; to accept as authoritative or true.” Well, which one am I doing? Well similar to Alicia Arnold, I ended up in the ALEC, which I don’t normally go to except that for my HDEV class, so the fact that I was here on the 14th of September was a surprise, but I found the need to be there from an Out of Class Experience from PRW. There is nothing to gain from going to this. I don’t even need help preparing for essay and multiple choice tests. These thoughts were going through my mind as I was sitting in the conference room with Ms. Umobong and other students. Eventually, Ms. Umobong passed the signing sheet, a handout, and says a greeting to the small group of seven of us. Meanwhile, I am discerning through the packet trying to understand the craziness that it is. I learned my first lessons from this no matter how much you think you already know and which habit you think are great can always be better. So after, we all sign in on the sheet, Ms. Umobong goes right into explaining a packet and unlike a lecture it seems more like a conversation than a class or workshop.

I was completely blown away by all the huge posters that were set up on the tables. Each poster described the mission of each organization. I loved and enjoyed seeing all the decorations on the posters because it completely drew my attention. About midway through the involvement fair, I saw this beautiful poster that I didn’t want to pass up seeing. I had no intention to know what this particular organization was, however, I just wanted to see the beautiful decorations. They had huge flowers that were on their posters and beautiful coloring that went along with it. As I walked up to this table, the people described themselves as the Society of Intersection Feminists. Hearing this, made my inner freshman self-feel a bit frantic. I had a hard time comprehending what all they said. All the information they gave me went through one ear and out the other. I respectfully said that I wasn’t interested, however, I was completely blinded by the fact that I had no idea what all this organization entailed. From this experience, I learned that if a person is at an involvement fair they should focus more on being persuaded by the information they share rather than being persuaded by the decorations that were revealed on their
In Adrienne Rich's "Claiming an Education," she encourages women to "claim" their education, rather than "receive" it. She is referring to the fact that some women feel the need to be granted permission by others, rather than getting up and doing what is best for them. She also inspires the students to take personal responsibility and earn the education they are entitled to, rather than taking the easy route to obtain their degrees. In order to earn the education we deserve, we must become active participants in that education. Students must demand to be taken seriously, make our education a top priority, and take classes that challenge us as individuals.
This is where the students from West View reflect on their experiences for the day. I was able to help out numerous students with their spelling and grammar. My favorite part of the day was being able to connect the activity to why college is important. After journal, it was time to take them back to their bus. We said our goodbyes and are patiently waiting for our next activity.
We feel it is important that students come together and have their voices heard, in the midst of setbacks within class. We have come together to highlight the benefits and challenges we have faced in this course. Although we acknowledge the negative experiences faced by our peers, we feel the need to also share our point of view. We acknowledge that many of our peers have felt ridiculed in the classroom, however we feel it was a matter of constructive criticism.
I hope you remember me because I was a student in your Summer 2016 Legal Research and Analysis class at University of California, San Diego Extension. If you do not remember me, I was unable to send you a complete final memorandum as a result of being admitted to the hospital the night that the memorandum was due. I was recently let go from my job as a Litigation Paralegal, which I obtained during graduation week. Their only reason was that they needed someone with more experience. Right now I am trying to enroll in my last two courses at UCSD Extension in order to officially complete my ABA-Approved Professional Certificate. When I spoke with Azra Mukanovic, she informed me that Julia Dunlap and herself discussed the situation and agreed
Today, fewer than two percent of college athletes go to the professional league leaving the rest to seek a new path of life (Rice.) The select few that have the opportunity to keep on playing in a professional league have the choice of leaving college early to get a head start. Athletes like Myron Rolle, O.J. Mayo, Michael Crabtree, Troy Smith, A. Q. Shipley, Cardale Jones, Odell Beckham Jr., Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Matt Barkley, Peyton Barber, and Anthony Davis had to make that huge decision that has been debated about through all of the sports organizations. Some of these athletes have been successful in their decisions and some have struggled regretting their decision. Athletes should not be allowed to leave college early
In CAB 100 this week, the first activity was listening and watching the first group's presentation. The second group presented a PowerPoint on problem solving and decision making. After the first presentation we took a break and took the second exam. Shortly after the exam the next group presented a PowerPoint on stress management. We learned about the C.A.L.M. method and how it helped relieved stress. The C.A.L.M method stands for Change, Accept, Let Go, and Manage. Once the group was finished, we were then dismissed from class for the week. I felt each group did a good job on their presentations and I enjoyed listening and watching their PowerPoints.
How do you perceive to claim an education without receiving one? Rich uses the dictionary to define the word claim, which means “ to take as the rightful owner; to assert in the face of possible contradiction” and then to receive is ¨to come into possession of; to act as receptacle container for; to accept as authoritative or true¨ (608). Claiming your education to me is going out out their and working hard to get it on your own because you want to. Receiving one is something that was given to you. Rich believes that everyone should go and claim their own education and that they shouldn’t settle for less because there is a difference between acting and being acted upon, and for women, it can literally mean the difference between life and death.
I currently possess a bachelor's degree in the psychological field. I utilize my degree to help others as a substitute teacher and a behavior coach. I have had many challenges in obtaining my bachelors degree. One of the greatest obstacles was financial stability. As a single person, I had to work two jobs, as well as attend school. I worked as a teacher's assistant by day, and a substitute custiodian by night; this was all the while working towards my degree. I worked Monday through Friday, twelve hours a day, in order to support myself while going to school full time. I made sure to work both jobs on consistent days, so that my weekends could be free in order to complete my school work. This was with no exception, the most challenging
I believe that continuing my education is very important to my future, so I extend learning into my summer vacation. I complete my required summer reading and read numerous other books of my choice. Also I write essays like this to apply for college scholarships and to improve my writing skills. Finally, during my vacation I study for the ACT and the SAT which allows me to improve my scores and
When you go back to school, you have to do a lot of stuff. You have to go to open house, go shopping, and, the worst part, you have to get back in your normal school routine. Fortunately, (sometimes) itś easy. Except for the routine, because thatś kind of hard.
Continuing my education is very important to me. I have worked diligently throughout my academic career to maintain excellent grades, participate in many extracurricular activities and dedicate some of my time to the community. My parents are both disabled and money is very tight. I do not, however, want this to keep me from furthering my education and being successful in life. I am proud to say that I am the first of four children in my family to attend college. I was lucky enough to be a recipient of the Leon and Beatrice Obenhaus Grodhaus Foundation Scholarship this past year, and I hope my hard work expresses my gratitude to the full extent. Your generous contribution to my education has established a foundation that I otherwise would not
I have always been academically talented, however the transition from junior high into the International Baccalaureate program in high school was a great challenge for me. I had become comfortable with the amount of effort necessary to skim by with A's and B's, and consequentially I had no real work ethic or drive to succeed. These two qualities are of tremendous importance for school, especially in regards to honors programs such as IB. I must admit, I did not achieve the grades I expected throughout my freshman and sophomore years, and it wasn't until the second semester of my sophomore year that I even recognized the problem! Thus, at the beginning of my junior year, I set out to change and grow into the student I had the potential to be.
School supplies and new clothes tend to be top priorities of parents when the back to school season arrives. There's a sense of relief that the kids will get back into a normal routine and parents often need a break from entertaining the kids. Although vacations are nice, they tend to take a lot of time and effort to plan. In fact, people often state they need a vacation from their vacation. Now is the time to start preparing children for a new school year and following are some of the Best Ways To Get Your Kids Ready To Go Back To School.
The difficulty that I have dealt with in this course is not necessarily concerned with presentation or knowledge of the material, but rather the organization and miscommunication that comes along with it. I understand that from the start there has been plenty of barriers that we had to push through, both as students and the professor, but nonetheless it hindered our ability to really take off on our own. Each time I attempted to sit down and learn the course material, it would change all of a sudden. Not in terms of the material itself, but the way in which both the TAs and the professor wanted it to be facilitated. This raises the second issue, and the one I found the most challenging. The miscommunication between the TAs themselves, as well as the professor, and having Caroline and Bobby’s presentation to top it all off. I felt that nobody was on the same page in terms of how they wanted parts of the
