Companies usually decide to do layoffs when they have financial problems such as a decrease in their profit, or when they want to reduce their cost by reducing a number of employees. Laying off employees is one of the toughest decisions that management has to makes. Employee reduction is a decision that must be made carefully and with cautious because it not only involves legal issues, but also affects moral in the company.
If an employee is laid off based on the subjective criteria such as a supervisor’s personal opinion about the employee’s characteristic, the employee can take legal actions against the company. Therefore, the company must use objective and quantifiable criteria such as yearly evaluations, productivity, and seniority to base its decision of whom should be laid off. Also, to prevent legal issues, a company must have policies, procedures, and layoff criteria on how to choose employees to be laid off. The policies and layoff criteria must be consistent across the company to preserve moral and reduce favoritism.
