In this essay I will discuss ‘What is agency?’ from what I have understood from the course readings. The readings that I have connected with most and that I feel help the discussion of this essay are, Holly Wardlows ‘Wayward Women’, which is the main text behind this essay and Kawika Tengan's ‘Native Men Remade’.
Agency is the capability of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices. It is also the perception that each human individual within a culture has the ability to determine and choose by free will his/her actions, beliefs, etc. This varies the idea that we are completely controlled by either nature or environmental factors because we maintain these native ideas to think for ourselves. Furthermore, this idea of agency does not suggest that cultural and natural forces are wrong, but rather adds to the the understanding of human behaviors within a culture. According to Wardlow, female agency is shaped by cultural and economic context. For her she see’s sexuality as an important instrument of this agency. How a person comes to be created is a very complex idea in a network of relations and the physical objects are partible aspects of a person. Persons are fleeting and provisional unitary actors, oriented towards and by relationships (Strathern 2013).
Agency is also seen as gendered. Gender is a possible and achieved quality that consists of bodily substances that impedes a person over their life cycle. It is an act of doing, not an essence. The
The structure and agency debate is a common one in the field of sociology and different theorists come up with different ways of accounting for the actions of social actors. This essay takes the position that structuration solves the problem of this much contested debate. Initially key concepts and elements of structuration will be pointed out .These elements include structure, agency, social systems and power amongst many others. Subsequently, there will be engagement of a discussion of different schools of thought and finally it will be demonstrated how structuration prevails over the structure-agency debate.
The global market has shown exemplary contribution to the growth of the world's development until recently where financial crisis have been bombarding most economies. As a result, the cost of livelihood had been unaffordable to many who live below the dollar. The monetary crisis has led to the lowering of many currencies against the dollar, hence advancing the economy crisis to most worldwide nations. This turn of events has been attributed to the lack of exercise of business and management ethics in many multinational companies, firms and investments. Financial scandals have been the order of the past twenty years leading to the sweep over of the flourishing global market. The scandals, especially in larger companies and multinational, are spurred by inter and intra-conflicts in their organizational structures.
Gender is often described as the state of being ether male or female. In most communities,
Free Will: “For the most part, what philosophers working on this issue have been hunting for is a feature of agency that is necessary for persons to be morally responsible for their conduct.” (2)
Gender is a huge aspect of society that influences much of how people act, regardless of age. According to Oxford Dictionary, gender is the state of being male or female
This paper talks about Children’s Crisis treatment Center (CCTC). CCTC as a system is concern with meeting the needs of children and families with mental health and those that have experienced abuse, neglect and trauma. The focus here will be on the School Therapeutic Services component, the connection it has to the system and the environment and attempt to bring to light whether CCTC is functioning in line with its mission statement. I will also be describing my place in the institution as a system.
Gender can also be seen as just being a male or a female. For instance, your role in society. In the book Wicked this can be displayed by the
Textualist like Scalia rejected the use of legislative history because ‘a legislature is a hydra-headed body whose members may not share a common view of the interpretive issues likely to be engendered by a statute that they are considering enacting. They think that they should merely look at the enacted text as they are merely the agent of the legislature according to the agency model’s view of the separation of powers. However, I am of the view that the agency model does not reflect the true and appropriate relationship between the judges and the legislature. The agency model only expresses one aspect of democracy, that is legislative supremacy but places like Hong Kong do not recognise legislative supremacy. Judges should not be a mere agent, they have a greater mission to ‘preserve democracy, maintain and develop human rights, and actualise the rule of law.’ Other than the ideological reasons for opposing the agency
Gender defines people in society. People may utilize their gender as an advantage or disadvantage, depending upon the situation. Whether it be a female or male, people can and will exploit themselves in order to achieve ‘happiness’ and goals. There is also many societal gender based stereotypes, for example if you are a man you behave a certain way and if you are a woman you behave a certain way although, there will always be stragglers who deviate the norm. Nevertheless they are judged for it.
The gender describes how our understandings and perception of differences between masculinity (what society deems appropriate behaviour a “man” and femininity (what society deems appropriate behaviour for a “woman”) are influenced.
When defining the word gender from The Oxford Living Dictionary it describes it as “either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones” (Gender). Two authors who explain gender are Anna Quindlen and Amy Cunningham. They both talk about how women have a harder role in society than men. While Cunningham shows that society depends on women, Quindlen proves a better perspective of why people do depend on women more. Anna Quindlen offers more comparison between male vs. female, women's looks vs. feelings, and manly vs. proper.
Gender is a learned social construction on what you do. It is a cultural system based on the binary opposition of men and women but there are also variations
Agency Conflicts: An agency relationship arises whenever someone, called a principal, hires someone else called an agent, to perform some service, and the principal delegated decisions making authority to the agent.
The term ‘gender’ was coined by John Money in 1955: “Gender is used to signify all those things that a person says or does to disclose himself/herself as having the status of a boy or man, girl or woman, respectively” (Coleman and Money, 1991, 13). In
Gender, as defined by the United Nations, includes the psychological, social, cultural, and behavioral characteristics associated with being female or male. It further defines acceptable and allowable behavior in for both men and women in a broad cultural sense (United Nations, 2016). Gender identity impacts our development and how we interact with society. Our daily life decisions are impacted by our gender role beliefs.
