What is “Love”? Love can be defined as different things. Love can be the love between brother and sister, sibling love, like Ender and Val. Love can also be the love between a boyfriend and girlfriend or a husband and wife, like Val and her husband, which the book doesn’t really talk much about, or Novinha and Libo. In strange cases, the love you should have for a girlfriend or wife but you feel that way for your sister, like Miro and Ouanda. Love is one of the weirdest feeling ever and is something all of the books characters face, maybe not in the same way but it will have an impact on their lives one way or another.
We all know that Ender and Valentine are brother and sister and they love each other as so. They’ve always had an awesome relationship and we know that since “Enders
Game”. Val would protect Ender from Peter so it’s no surprise that when Ender leaves Valentine is devastated. “ “In a month Val, I might not have the courage to leave you.” “Then don’t! ......” ” (Card 78). In this dialogue the reader get’s to understand that both of the characters love each other, if they didn’t, why wouldn’t Ender have the courage to leave her later? Why would Val ask him to stay? Probably Val would be the one who is hurt the most since Ender’s voyage will last 22 years. Valentine will feel the 22 years but Ender will only feel it as if it was 1 week. A lot is going to happen to Valentine in those 22 years, for example her daughter will be born. “Her belly was tight and
Valentine was Ender's inspiring push to keep him going, but even she was another tool the government used to manipulate Ender. Ender got manipulated a lot in the novel by adults, especially when he was training in the simulator. The adults acted like it was just a game or challenge, and that Ender was just practicing to face the buggers. But when the final test came and Ender won by destroying the whole bugger race, he realized that the adults lied to him, and it was never just a game.
So he must rely only on himself, this being the only way that Graff believes Ender will be able to reach his fullest abilities. Just before lunch Ender heads to the showers and he finds himself surrounded by seven boys, with Bonzo as the leader. Ender quickly realizes that Bernard and the other boys aren’t the ones who are the threat; it is Bonzo who wants to kill him. He is able to use Bonzo's honor to convince him to face him alone. Bonzo strips down to face Ender on equal terms, “Naked and wet and alone, Ender, so we’re even” (209. Ender asks Bonzo not to hurt him to try and get him to attack. Bonzo jumps at him; Ender avoids the attack and hits Bonzo in the face with his head. He has injured Bonzo badly enough and Ender knows he should be able to walk away, but he does not want to have to fight a battle like this again. Ender realizes he must make Bonzo fear him more than he hates him. He knocks Bonzo to the ground and kicks him in the crotch. Bonzo is motionless, and does not even respond. Ender is in despair over how he hurt Bonzo, and begins to cry. After his fight with Bonzo, the worst event in Ender's life so far, Ender leaves
Valentine is Ender’s older sister and provides Ender with a positive role model at a sibling level. Valentine
He is a lovable person and can be extremely dark too, depending on the circumstances and situation. Ender uses his developed brain in order to examine positions and possibilities in order to win the game. At the same time he uses brutal methods to gain possession; injuring or even death is a possibility in Enders thinking. Ender has a very broad mind in which helps him succeed and love at the same time during battle, “In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him”(Card 127-128). This quote holds Ender’s personality in relation to Valentine’s. As a result, Ender has the same charisma as both of his sibling, and uses them as a positive tool to determine and win the stationary
It’s something the two have always shared because of Peter being present in their lives. Valentine, the person Ender could most relate to affected both Ender’s personality and his love towards people. It’s stated that Valentine is the only person that Ender is sure loves him unconditionally. Ender knows that Valentine has manipulated him twice but continues to let her. Card’s theme of love projects here, despite the fact that Graff used Valentine twice to get to Ender. “Valentine, who still loved Ender no matter what happened” (247).Valentine acts as a beacon of hope through the many simulations Ender goes through. He always thinks of her in difficult times. The emphasis on that message is used to keep Ender from leaning towards insanity after all the exhaustion from fighting battles. After all, Graff said that they, “...had to have a commander with so much empathy that he would think like the buggers, understand them and anticipate them” (300). Ender’s empathy works out in Graff’s favor, but it’s one of the main reasons Ender has a hard time coping with the Buggers’ death and his
Using Valentine and Ender’s love for her, Graff made her write a letter to Ender. Since Ender is intelligent, he quickly figured out that the letter was feigned. This affected his attitude and thoughts about his teachers. Afterwards, they used Valentine to persuade Ender to become a commander and go to Commander School. This time though, he knew they sent Valentine to manipulate him again and he realized she was right. In addition to saying that he could save the world, Valentine also says “If you try and lose then it isn't your fault. But if you don't try and we lose, then it's all your
She is the only one who truly loves him and the one he cares for the most. She protects Ender from harm, teaches him, and offers him love when no one else does. She facilitates him to become an exceeding leader. Such as, “The one real thing, the one precious real thing was his memory of Valentine, the person who loves him before he ever played a game, who loved him whether there was a bugger war or not, and they had taken her and put her on their side. She was one of them now” (151). This reveals that Valentine is Ender’s weakness. Colonel Graff acknowledges that and he exploits it. He could never let anything harm her thus; he will be determined to fight and win for her. Valentine provides a reason to Ender; a reason to continue fighting; a reason to never give up. She is both his weakness and strength. In addition, “Two faces of the same coin and I [Valentine] am the metal in between” (56). Over the course of this novel, Ender is afraid of resembling Peter’s ruthless side although Valentine stands in between it. She is what stops him from being completely cold and brutal. Her mild personality teaches him to be empathetic. Valentine is Ender’s emotional drive. Ultimately, Ender cares for no one more than the way he feels towards Valentine. His sister brings the best out of him. She grants him strength and keeps him in line; everything needed in a
They were practicly living his whole life! Of course this was done by using a monitor. This device helps the authorities greatly on being able to chose if these remarkable indivisuals are the right people for the job. When these so called authorities finally realize that Ender is the one that will save them all he is immedeatly retreived by Colonial Graff. When Colonial Graff reaches Enders home his parents were startled. Including his evil brother Peter and beloved sister Valentine, which in fact also had the monitors but had them reoved a couple years earlier. After a long discussion Ender accepts the offer and says his goodbyes knowing that he will not be able to see his family for a very long time. When Ender reaches the school he has no time to waste. The next morning he attends his first class. In class his smarts are shown when he cracks the teachers security system. This allowed him to send anything he wanted through his tablet with the name of another. He used this trick to his advatage by sending cruel but funny remarks in some elses name to his fellow class
Which is very odd for his character that he has developed in the minds of not only the reader, but also his siblings. He skinned squirrels alive to torture them, while Ender would have tried to befriend them. Then suddenly he presents his idea of what will happen after the war with the buggers, not only has he found facts to prove it but he has also found the weapons and intel the Russians have been producing to prepare for this new war. He also cries right in of Valentine whether for his own personal gain is debatable, but even Valentine who would know Peter the best is confused by his acts: “ Suddenly Peter wept into his hands. Val assumed that he was pretending, but then she wondered.“(83). Although the natural response would or at least most commonly would be “he is faking it”, however even Valentine is too confused to even tell herself. It’s like the phrase “keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer” however in this moment it is very hard to tell whether has actually changed in the end or not. He did save billions of
Throughout the entire novel, there are a number of key characters that portray different roles throughout the novel as they sway Ender’s thoughts and motives. Both of his siblings – Valentine and Peter can be used to represent two sides of Ender himself (the good and the evil). Valentine plays the role of the compassionate character, and acts as Ender’s motivation to get through battle school. Her actions influence him to try to understand others. This can be seen on page 241, “Nobody, Ender. I’ll tell you something. If you try and lose then it isn’t your fault. But if you don’t try and we lose, then it’s all
Ender knew he could be a great person/leader if he could build loyalty. If the Launchies respected Ender, they would back him up in the
There were some major key elements that made the “Enders’ Game” so interesting to read. One element was Enders’ istolation from his peers Mazor Rackman still being alive. He provided a calming influence on Ender. He has able to push Ender like no one else could. Another Key Element was Ender love for Valentine. She was the only one that truly cared and understood Ender. She is the reason why Ender went to Battle School and the reason why he stayed
He is a cold hearted person for the duration of the book.. When he convinced Valentine to help him get to power he was calculated . Ender developed instead of changing, each situation he was confronted with at battle school left a mark on him. For better or worse. On the whole I think the characters stayed the same
Ender is born into a family of highly intelligent people. As a child he is hated by his brother, Peter, along with other schoolmates and is protected by his sister, Valentine. He has to leave Valentine behind when he is taken away to Battle School, which is located on a ship very far away from earth so he can assist in the fight against the buggers. Ender shows off his extreme intelligence and is separated from the rest of the recruits by Colonel Graff of the International Fleet. Ender then becomes friends with a recruit name Alai. This aids Ender to make friends and fit in with people. Ender is noticed by the military commanders because of his dominance in “the mind game”. He is promoted to the Salamander Army shortly after.
All of the following characters have a huge impact on the book Ender’s Game: Ender/Andrew, Valentine, Peter, and Bean. Ender is the main character who is clever, sensitive, belligerent, and hegemonic. Whereas Valentine is clever sensitive, and hegemonic. She is definitely not belligerent. Unlike Valentine, Bean, as well as Peter, can be very belligerent, especially Peter. Although Bean is not very hegemonic. Peter is not the sensitive type, he would much rather hide the love he has for Ender. Although these characters are extremely different, they are still connected through their different emotions that impact each other's lives. Clever is one trait that especially connects Valentine and Peter as siblings.
