Contemporary realistic fiction helps children feel like they are not alone. When I was younger it would bother me that I was the only girl. All my friends had sisters. I was jealous that they had sisters. I can remember reading Junie B. Jones and feeling cool that I had a little brother like her. I didn’t feel alone because of that book.

Adam Cooper started out as a fifteen-year-old boy, but became a fifteen-year-old man. In the beginning, Adam could not get along with his father, Moses Cooper, and truly believed that his father hated him. Moses was always getting on to Adam for everything he did. In Moses’ eyes his boy could do better than he let on if he would only apply himself a little bit more. “There was nothing that a Cooper man couldn’t do.”

Furthermore, the illustrations paint a beautiful picture that I like to think is an insight into a child’s mind, which I is a key element in this book and what makes it so great. Since the book is narrated by a child the intentional simplicity of the words and the controlled chaos that is the illustrations breathes unadulterated life into a rather normal children’s book.

“Undressing Aunt Frieda,” is a poem about the narrator’s remembrance of his Aunts life while visiting her on a death bed. The narrative is in first person, and takes place as the narrator and his daughter are about to leave the relative. The first half of the poem explores Frieda and her past. The second half is about how the narrator and daughter have grown and learned from the aunt. While undressing her aunt, the narrator feels emotions and remembers his past with Frieda. The poem describes these emotions and memories in a metaphor explaining unique characteristics of how Aunt Frieda undressed, and how she impacted the relatives.

It exemplifies the behavior of the boy and his father throughout the rest of the novel and shows how much they are willing to do to stay alive. It shows the fire within them.

Both her maternal grandparents are of African American, Caucasian American, and Native American (American Indian) descent. One of the proband’s maternal aunts and her two daughters (proband’s maternal cousins) have type 2 diabetes mellitus. The proband’s maternal grandmother had type 1 diabetes mellitus. Both of the proband’s maternal aunts are cancer survivors. One aunt had Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the other had breast cancer. One of the proband’s paternal aunts (at age 52) and her daughter (at age 32) both died of cancer. Proband’s paternal grandmother and great aunt are twins and her mother and one of her maternal aunts are monozygotic twins.

It is scary when you don’t know anybody and have to try to make new friends. Many of your young childhood friends will stay with you for a lifetime. Today, I am still friends with many of my oldest friends. They have become like family. I want to say that this novel is a great way for people to see how somebody from a diverse population lives. It is a great book from the view of somebody living a completely different life than I have lived. I think it was very well written and is easy to read. My grandmother’s house has a very special place in my heart. As the family has gotten older and we have all had our own children we do not visit as we should.
